There are few constants with Queens of the Stone Age . The band sees members come and go on a yearly bases, and each record they put out never sounds quite like the last one. The important things always stay the same though: The ever-present guidance of front-man vocalist/guitarist Josh Homme , and that every record is sorta, kinda, awesome. Today Queens of the Stone Age released the first song from their upcoming 2013 effort, ... Like Clockwork . "My God Is The Sun," is exactly what you were hoping for: More infectious, repetitious hamm ering of notes, building and [...]

M83 brainchild Anthony Gonzalez is scoring a sci-fi epic, Oblivion , staring Tom Cruise , and it's absolutely fantastic. Ethereal, and haunting, "StarWaves," is absolutely fitting for the "last man on earth/ post-apocalyptic" type of movie Oblivion looks to be. Built around a slow musical crescendo, the core of "StarWaves" certainly sounds cinematic, but mixed throughout are electronic flourishes and beats that allow the piece to stand apart. If the rest of the soundtrack for Oblivion is like "StarWaves" it will be a refreshing change to the Inception -fueled, deep-bass hum so many [...]

If you've ever wondered what psychedelic crooning might sound like, "A New Life" from Jim Jame's upcoming solo album is for you! My Morning Jacket's front-man Jim James has a solo album coming out next month called Regions Of Light And Sound Of God . From the two tracks released so far, it sounds like it's going to be a floaty pop-rock based romp with a weird side. Hints at a funky 702s vibe dance their way through your ear on the song "Know Til Now" while the aforementioned "A New Life," placed images of a seedy, [...]

We've gushed about Leatherbag here before, and I'm about to again. One last time. Earlier this summer, Leatherbag decided to end their run , making way for new projects, and new sounds. As a thank you to their fans they've put out a collection of rarities, b-sides and live tracks at their bandcamp page. The live tracks showcase just how much energy the band puts behind their playing, and the demos and b-sides are a great look at what could have been. It's a great little collection, and [...]

Next Tuesday union-made, New Jersey punk rockers Titus Andronicus will release their first full length album since 20102s fantastic The Monitor . Titled Local Business , from what we've heard so far it's got the same energy, strained impassioned vocals and guitar rock chops that made The Monitor such a rock and roll standout. Judge for yourself with "In A Big City," and "Still Life With Hot Deuce On A Silver Platter:" Keep up to date with Titus Andronicus [...]

The last time we posted about Yellow Ostrich they completely blew us away with their psychedelic, ever-building rocker "The Shakedown." The song "Ghost" from their upcoming EP, and which premiered at the always fantastic Stereogum , sees the band cultivating a completely different sort of sound. Gone are the distorted guitars and crash cymbals; that hard-nosed indie rock vibe. "Ghost" is a laid-back step into a world of subdued indie-pop. Layered vocals, and humming, sustained guitar parts drift throughout the song, as random percussive bits play in the background. It feels incredibly sparse compared to previous efforts. It's [...]

Someone once told me that dubstep is what Optimus Prime having an orgasm sounds like: an ear assaulting blast of electronic fueled ecstasy. With its low grumbling bass parts and exalting breakdowns and "drops," sometimes I wonder if dubstep doesn't have more in common with metal music than, say, techno and other electronica. A star in the dubstep world, Minneapolis artist Vaski was nice enough to sit down with MTIB's Chuck Ryan to discuss his music. To talk about the common misconceptions of dubstep, where he sees it all going, and whatever is in his backpack. [...]

"Duqusne Whistle" is exactly the type of sound you want to hear out of old-man Dylan; an old world sound spiked with some modern flair. This is Dylan's take on ragtime; a laid back, foot-stomping rocker of a song. Hopefully it is a sign for great things for his upcoming album: Tempest . Maybe nothing has changed as much about Bob Dylan as his voice has. Dylan has never really bound himself to a particular style of singing, often developing a unique voice for each record (take [...]

The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion were one of the finest examples of thick-distorted grunge from the 902s, and now they're back. It's been eight years since The Blues Explosion recorded together, but come September 18th you can check out an entire new album: Meat and Bone . A band coming back to make a new album after a long hiatus has a unique challenge ahead of them: They have to show musical evolution, all the while maintaining the spirit of their original work. If "Black Mold" is any indication, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion have done [...]

Multi-instrumental, multi-talented, and multi-banded musician Chris Cohen has got the expereience to back up his raw talent; he is a former member of Deerhoof , The Curtains and Natural Dreamers . Experience gained from going on tours, playing a ton of instruments, and truly living life as a working-mans musician. "Optimist High," the latest listen from his upcoming first album Overgrown Path , is a fantastic example of where good experience can lead you. There's a laid-back, 602s psychadelia vibe going on in "Optimist High." It's a song that is clearly [...]

Dr. John's album Locked Down has been out for a couple of months now, though I've only recently become obsessed with it. At 71 years old, Dr. John has still got the same distinctive mumbled-growl, and ear for the funky. Helped out by some kid named Dan Auerbach , Locked Down manages to tap into many of the sounds popular on the radio today, all while keeping that veteran New Orleans sound. There really is something special going on with Locked Down . The pairing of Auerbach and [...]

If your'e going to be in an experimental band, Black Moth Super Rainbow is about as good of a name as you can get. Not a ton is known about the mysterious Pittsburgh, PA based group, but what is known is that they just recently Kickstarted a new album : Cobra Juicy. The song "Windshield Smasher" is our first taste of it, and it is wicked catchy. A heavy dose of 802s synths, covered in a layer of grunge, with plenty of funky-psychadelic pop breakdowns; It's a unique sound, and one I'm excited to [...]

IAMDYNAMITE , if ever a band was worthy of an all-caps title it's this Detroit bred rock-duo. Thundering, upbeat, and imbued with the inherit ability to rock your face off, IAMDYNAMITES' recently released album SUPERMEGAFANTASTIC is all that and more. Take "Where Will We Go" for example: That rolling drum beat, chant-like vocals, and space filling fuzz guitar can really shake some bones; it's an addictive sound. A sound that you don't just dance to, you bounce. And bounce you should, tomorrow night when IAMDYNAMITE plays the Varsity Theater [...]

Nashville based garage-rockers, Turbo Fruits have a wonderfully nasty sound about them. A sound forged out of sweaty garage sessions, and the staunch, repetitive use of power chords. It's down and dirty rock-n-roll reminiscent of early Kings of Leon records. Which makes sense as their upcoming studio album, Butter , is being released through Kings of Leon's Serpents and Snakes Records this September 11th. Take a listen, and download the meandering rocker "Sweet Thang" below. Also, be sure to also take a listen to the just released title track from the [...]

Danny Brown recently stepped into the studio with producer Araabmuzik , and in under a day, they've given us something completely origina l and from scratch to feast our ears on: "Molly Ringwald." We've listened to Danny Brown before at MTIB , and we were impressed by his manic, throw-back sound and interesting story. "Molly Ringwald" shows a more modern sounding side of Brown. Where before there was a laid back coolness to his voice, "Molly Ringwald" puts Danny Brown at a full-blown sprint; It is an intense, fast, and far more modern sounding [...]

Green Day has made some mighty fine punk-rock over the years. Then, kind of out of left-field, they started making some equally fine arena-filling, rock-opera stuff. Of the bands we children of the 902s grew up with, maybe none have gone through as interesting musical changes, while remaining relevant, as Green Day has. Up next for the band is a trilogy of albums called ¡Uno! , ¡Dos! , and ¡Tré! set to be released over the next year or so. Our fitst taste of the album, ¡Uno!, is "Oh Love." So take [...]

"All Devils Here Now" is a thank you gift of sorts from The Mountain Goats . Thanks for helping them reach 40,000 twitter followers. Now that's crowd-sourcing! An old, unreleased demo "All Devils Here Now" is a great laid-back acoustic strummer. Composed of nothing more than singer John Darnielle , a lone guitar and "actual Iowa bugs " the song is hauntingly sparse. There's an eerie vacancy to the song, that you rarely seem to hear with the big budget productions of today. It's a refreshing, and great, listen. MP3 | The Mountain Goats - "All Devils [...]

It's been almost two years since we've gotten anything new from The Avett Brothers , the last being their fantastic 2009 album I And Love And You . Now, with just a quick trip over to NPR's website , you can finally get a taste of what they've been cooking up since then. "Live and Die," from the upcoming album The Carpenter , certainly shares some elements of the songs from I And Love and You ; upbeat, lighthearted folk-pop with lots of plucky instruments and harmonized vocals. Yet it almost has [...]

Space , the upcoming album from The Tribe & Big Cats (out tomorrow!), is their most laid back, and smooth effort to date. Loaded with mellow jazz-infused beats that conjure up images of Chicago or New York City in the 702s, the entire album has an air of old school swagger to it. MC Chris "TruthBeTold" Hooks takes a commanding presence among it all; a voice that despite taking it slow, is filled with such passion and fire it's impossible to not be drawn in. Join Chuck Ryan as he sits down with Chris Hook [...]

An incredibly wise man once said that beer is: "The cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems." For Nashville rock-duo JEFF the Brotherhood it's also a muse. "Six Pack" pegs the fermented beverage as the center piece to carefree days, good times, and great rock and roll. With the low grumbling guitar, pining vocals and stoic drumming, it's almost like your listening to the ghost of Weezer's Blue Album. Without the lamenting of lost love though. Instead, JEFF the Brotherhood sound like they're all about sharing a six pack, and reminiscing about the [...]
