The planned reboot of Daredevil may have found its director. Variety report that 30 Days of Night and Hard Candy helmer David Slade has been offered the job, following his actually-very-good go at the Twilight franchise with Eclipse. Their sources add that it's not thought to be a reboot as such, more a continuation of the saga, minus the team from 2003's film. Mark Steven Johnson's critically mauled take on Daredevil saw Ben Affleck as the Marvel superhero, and co-starred Jennifer Garner as Elektra and Colin Farrell as Bullseye. 20th Century [...]

Looks like it'll be a very, very good year. This here's number 11 . Hit the break for more. 20. The deluxe edition reprint of Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s Vertigo miniseries (and "Doom Patrol" spin-off) “Flex Mentallo,” which has been held up in courts for years since Charles Atlas thought the entire concept ripped off their ads about turning a 90 lb weakling into a big muscleman who can punch out obnoxious bullies on the beach. This [...]

Fast reviews of last week's comics! Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne #5. Best issue of the series ever, due largely to the amazing artwork by relative newcomer Ryan Sook (of “Seven Soldiers”) and also because, finally, something relevant happened. I get the sense that most of issues 1 through 4 are, and will be, irrelevant to Batman’s return. It’s not until now that we are told that by trying to “return”—by resisting Darkseid’s Omega Effect—Bruce will punch a hole through the fabric of time. Or something [...]

I don’t know about you, but I think “No Ordinary Family” is pretty meh, and I have no idea when “Capes” is coming to broadcast TV. NBC’s “Heroes” has died a prolonged, choking death. So why is there so much talk about Marvel (especially) and D.C. (kinda) jumping into the serialized TV drama market? The news is exciting, with superstar David E. Kelley attached to a Wonder Woman project, a Blue Beetle series in production, Chew being looked at by AMC for a regular series, and the new animated Avengers series on Disney XD—probably the best new supercartoon I’ve seen [...]

"We're just drifting all night long, hands to the sky..." Diary by Candy and TJ Frustratingly we arrive at the festival site on Thursday evening just as Mark Lanegan and Isobel Campbell take to the stage for their special guest slot in the Tipi Tent. Unfortunately we need to get our tents up before it gets dark and therefore have to settle for hearing the muffled strains of their set from the campsite. Inspection of the programme later reveals that we have also missed Willy Mason who had popped in for a cheeky 6pm [...]

I’m such a huge fan of hornhead that I made a pledge to buy every single Shadowland and tie-in (except for Thunderbolts, which I’ll probably get in trade). I’ve never done that before, ever, but since they promised to include so many of my favorite hard-to-find characters (Misty Knight, Colleen Wing, Shang Chi, Black Tarantula, White Tiger, Iron Fist, Ghost Rider, etc.), I decided to go all in for the first time. I’ve been surprised, and not always in a good way. Some of the ones I thought I’d love, I’m not digging, and the one I thought would be [...]

1. BLACK PANTHER IS DAREDEVIL. Okay, le ad story has to be that the Gambit rumors were all wet and the new Daredevil is T’Challa. Or will be, anyway, when Daredevil #513 comes out and the title is: Black Panther: Man Without Fear. It’s all temporary until we get Daredevil: Reborn next year, a miniseries by Andy Diggle. BP:MWF will bring BP back to his karate-chop roots, as he’s not in Wakanda anywmore. Just as well. The Black Panther series itself got stale, mostly because BP was portrayed as [...]

In a move similar to what they did with the INCREDIBLE HULK series, Marvel is replacing Daredevil in his own book with the Black Panther. Marvel replaced Hulk with Hercules, changing the title to INCREDIBLE HERCULES which ended up raising Hercules' popularity quite a bit. It appears they are expecting the same with this change. The Black Panther, while not one of the big guns of the Marvel Universe, has had his share of importance in recent years and already has a size-able fan following due to his previous series and connections with Storm of the X-Men. [...]

It’s been a few weeks—I’ve been busy—so some of this may be old . . . But at least there's a lot of it! 1. WALKING DEAD. Of course this is the lead story . . . AMC released a 4-minute trailer, and confirmed that the show will launch on Halloween for a special 90-minute episode directed by Frank Darabont, followed by 5 more episodes for the first “season.” (They’re already in pre-production for season 2.) If you’re not saying you can’t wait until Halloween, you are hereby [...]

It's Wednesday. For the rest of the world, this means the middle of the week, the day when the memories of a great weekend disappear and the promises of ever having fun again start to dissipate. For me, it's the greatest day of the week because Wednesday is New Comic Day! Just like every Tuesday is the date for new music to ship, Wednesday is when comic book stores get flooded with the week's new material. I've enjoyed this weekly bundle of joy since I was a little David D. Throughout all of these years, I've come across a ton [...]

With Shadowland reviving the classic DD vs. Bullseye rivalry, and Matt Murdock continuing his decades-long slide from the superhero side of the spectrum towards the Punisher/vigilante side, there’s been a lot of talk about The Most Important Superhero Comic Of This Era. Why do I call it that? Becuase in my lifetime we’ve seen two major movements in how comic stories are told, and both occurred in Daredevil. First, there was the movement away from the emphasis on words, with panels representing still-images in time-illustrated stories. Frank Miller and Klaus Janson brought fluidity between panels (and [...]

This week, I’m introducing a new feature of “top 10s” (or “Top 20s” or “Top 5s” as the case may be) for the comic world. I hope to be publishing one a week, but I may be getting ahead of myself. This week, my ten favorite non-powered bit players. In other words, minor characters. Aunt May? Lois Lane? Foggy Nelson? Too major for this list. They’ve got to be someone you might see a few times a year, or who might appear in a few pages every couple months, and who rarely [...]

1. X-MEN: FIRST CLASS. Of all the upcoming cape flicks, this is the one I’m second-most-looking-forward-to (first is Avengers, natch!). Despite the title, the film will include not just the original 5 muties from the Stan Lee era, but also will have Banshee, Magneto (of course), Emma Frost, and Havok. 2. ULTIMATE THOR. The “Ultimates” line used to be the gold standard for Marvel comic storytelling. The relaunch, not so much. But one of the most interesting, complex authors [...]

Continuing from yesterday's megapost , today we have the not-quites..... First, the ones who were bubbling under. It took 19 votes out of the 200 to make the top 10, and these just didn’t make the cut—but I was surprised they didn’t get more attention: Ed Brubaker/Matt Fraction/David Aja's Iron Fist (2 votes) JMS’s Thor (3 votes) John Byrne’s Superman: 15 votes (oooh! So close!) Grant Morrison’s Batman: 4 votes (a shocker, by the way—I thought it’d be a lot more) Barr/Boland’s King Arthur (Camelot [...]

Call it a retcon. Call it a reboot. Call it a revamp. Just don’t call it a comeback. I asked for your votes a few weeks ago on the writer and/or artist who most “redefined” a character. The main criterion was that the character had to be someone else’s creation, not their own. Between e-mail and blog comments I got about forty responses, with a total of about 200 votes for various characters. Of course, many books got just a few (or even a single) vote. Some were worthy of more (which I’ll [...]
One of the few books I still buy in issue form is Daredevil . I also just finished re-reading the entire Bendis-through-Brubaker runs. It’s some of the best work you’ll ever read. The Bendis run is best read in chunks because nothing much seems to happen in any one single issue, despite the fact that the art is groundbreaking and the “wordless” issue, early in the run, is fantastic. But over the course of the run, the story develops inexorably, gradually, and surprisingly. It's longform storytelling unlike anything in comics (other than, perhaps, Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead). Through [...]

The prestigious (for comics anyway) Eisner awards have been nominated, and, of course, I haven’t read most of the books on there because I mostly read capes, and mostly Marvel at that, and the Eisners tend to be about indie creativity rather than mainstream popularity or hot-fun action. But that doesn’t stop me from having some opinions about some of the major categories . . . Best Limited Series or Story Arc. Nominees: Blackest Night (DC); Incognito, (Marvel Icon); Pluto: Urasawa X Tezuka (VIZ Media); "Old Man Logan" story arc [...]
Terri Tarantula - "The Daredevil Way" from the 2010 self-titled album on SKOK Records.
Note: This list eschews the obvious (Justice League!), the pretty-far-along (Deadpool!) and the already done (even if you sucked, you were Superman, Brandon!) in favor of those books that need their adaptations developed NOW! As always, I favor capes over clothes and lean heavily towards Marvel and DC. Those are my personal biases. If you don’t like it, start your own blog. 15. The Falcon. Medium: Movie. Pitch: Like Batman, only with a poor black dude. Dream lead: Derek Luke (Antoine Fisher) [...]
