Enjoy. ♩ d'Eon - Transparency pt. II

The work of experimental Montreal-based composer, d’Eon dates back to the early 90s, which perhaps exacerbates the (unsought) parallels that are often drawn between his voice and Phil Collins’. In regards to this “problem,” he once commented, “It’s really funny, I actually had no idea that my voice sounded like Phil Collins when I started out … and then there were a couple of reviews when the new record came out that sort of trashed it for sounding too much like Phil Collins. And I thought ‘Oh man like, damn. I didn’t realize this was an issue.’ I [...]

When I saw Grimes open for Austra last year, I saw a meek DIY artsy girl dressed in a grungy t-shirt and dark tights wail into a microphone while expertly mixing complex tracks to produce a seriously rhythmic dance spell. Now, as 2012 has unraveled before us, Claire Boucher, the Montreal-based mastermind behind Grimes, has become the “it girl” of the indie music blogosphere. Much more than just a buzz band, Grimes has sky-rocketed in popularity thanks to the success of her previous albums ( Geidi Primes , Halafaxa , Darkbloom ) as well as her signing [...]

ALBUMS OF 2011 #45 - #41 #45 Crystal Stilts - In Love With Oblivion - Shake The Shackles ( MP3 ) Brooklyn garage rock at its finest; ‘In Love With Oblivion’ comprises of crisp and courageous, and occasionally gallant post-punk from apparent veterans of the scene Crystal Stilts . The 2011 Slumberland release is afflicted with the dark and incommutable vocals, strange key changes and strikingly full melody. An instant classic of the era it evokes, summed up thematically in the black and white colouration of above album cover. [...]
Houston’s ridiculously loud shoegaze band Pink Playground , released ‘ Destination Ecstasy ’ last week via Mexican Summer. The eight track album features the smokey song ‘Dark Bloom’ along with a bunch of material originally released on harder to find EPs. Download audio file (Pink-Playground_Dark-Bloom.mp 3) ‘Dark Bloom’ has a lot going on. Guitars overlap, playing seemingly different melodies and rhythms as the vocals get pushed into the background. Harkening back to the 80s, there’s dissonant synths and lo-fi delay throughout the record. You’ll either love it or loathe it. [...]

We first came across Grimes (Claire Boucher) earlier this year when she blew people away with her performances at SXSW. Since then things seem to have sped up a lot, with the release of her split EP Darkbloom with d'Eon and subsequent videos for "Vanessa" (self directed) and "Crystal Ball" . Claire's now prepping the re-release of her Geidi Primes LP through No Pain In Pop , previously released in 2010 by Arbutus Records . This re-release is to be kicked off with the new video for "Beast Infection", [...]

Montrealer Claire Boucher, aka Grimes, recently came out with a split 123 with d'Eon called Darkbloom . Boucher's music features a lot of eerie loops, light percussion and high pitched falsettos. It may be a little too creepy for some, but for others it will keep your head bobbin for at least few days.

It's time to let go, summer is finally here and we're proud to say that we have a good list of albums this season for you and your friends to wreak havoc to. Make sure to drop all of those worries and get familiar with that carefree outlook on life; soundtracked with some incredible music, of course.

Claire Boucher is definitely special, whether she reminds us of Björk, Karin Dreijer Andersson or the Cocteau Twins. The video was directed by Tim Kelly , is quite dark and cold, as it it shot in the snow and its main colors are dark blue and black, but because of Claire's merry sweetness, becomes rather warm and happy. I have to admit though that I couldn't help thinking of Madonna's Frozen, while watching the video. See for yourselves... And Madonna's Frozen: Enjoy the stream of the whole [...]

(Courtesy of Sadaf Hakimian) Previous Grimes track 'Vanessa' attained CN status and featured on last months mixtape (unlike other sites, this is an actual MIX-tape, not a bunch of songs thrown together) and "Crystal Ball" has every chance of featuring at the end of this month. continue reading >>

Grimes — Urban Twilight Here’s a track from the brilliant Darkbloom , Grimes ’ new 12” split with fellow Montreal native D’eon (Out on Hippos in Tanks / Arbutus ). If you dug the syrupy pop visions of last year’s Geidi Primes and Halfaxa , the stunningly pretty “Urban Twilight” should sit quite comfortably in your headspace. [ mp3 ]
One of the most interesting aspects of the SXSW Festival, that came to a close last month, happens in the weeks following it's finish. As much fun and buzz as it no doubt is at the time, it's ultimately a massive industry showcase for new artists, so the real interest should be about who emerge as eventual winners once the Texan smoke has dissipated. The obvious choice is Odd Future - or Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All to give them their ridiculous full name - an extraordinary Los Angeles collective, (occasionally up [...]
