Red Hot Organization (RHO) — некоммерческая международная организация, использующая поп-культуру как оружие для борьбы со СПИДом. В 2009 году, совместно с лейблом 4AD, они выпустили один из лучших сборников в истории независимой музыки — «Dark Was the Night», кураторами которого выступили братья Аарон и Брюс Десснеры из Clogs и The National. 28 июня выходит вторая часть их легендарного сборника «Red Hot + Rio», на котором популярные музыканты берутся за жанр тропикалия, в котором нашли себя лучшие бразильские композиторы семидесятых. Список участников не просто впечатляет — это John Legend, Os Mutantes, Devendra Banhart, Caetano Veloso, Dirty Projectors, Seu Jorge, Back, José Gonzales, Beirut, of Montreal, Gogol Bordello, Madlib, Neon Indian, Cults и прекрасная St. Vincent. Since opening a little over a year and a half ago, Brooklyn Bowl has cemented itself as one of the premier and most unique destinations to see live music, eat high quality comfort food and roll a few frames. Earlier this week, Eater Chicago revealed that the folks behind our favorite NYC venue have plans to expand to the Windy City and open the aptly named Chicago Bowl. The venue, which won't open until 2012 and already has its own Twitter account , will be housed on the site of a 23,000 square-foot former auto [...]

Emotions emotions emotions, all day everyday... In my head, out of it, flying everywhere you go, all around you... Some people call those "God" because they are with every single person on earth... Happiness I was very happy to stumble upon two artists that I really appreciate on the Blogothèque french blog. I already talked about their concept in an older post . It's pretty simple, they invite the best artists to do some "take away shows" for a bunch of lucky [...]
![[BETTER WITH TIME] The National](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2891859_lg.jpg)
I paid attention to The National on the early half of 2007. What a treat was that year, musically speaking. Their album, Boxer , came out that year and introduced me to really good alternative rock. And I didn't like their music because it was all the rage, but it really was great music. Their sound is unique and feel good. And I believe the universe conspired to get me to have a first listen of the group from the best album they ever had [...]

So I'm super tempted to say that these two compilation discs changed my life (which you'll see they kind of did), but I'd be lying to say I discovered most of the artists featured with the album. Actually, most of the artists are among my favorites like Conor Oberst, Grizzly Bear, The National and especially Bon Iver and Iron & Wine. . But here , the artists I fell in love with in the past show new perspectives or takes on other songs I either had no knowledge [...]

Antony & Bryce Dessner - I Was Young When I Left Home Eamon sat on the porch of a house he did not live in. He looked out at the road ahead. It was dusty, one-way, leading away from the trees to flatlands that spanned the horizon and sat lonely with the sun sometimes at the end of the day, when it had tired of hanging in the sky lighting the way for the lost. It would fall, swap tales with the land before disappearing to rest. The moon would kick up its heels, hum a [...]
Jose Gonzales' long-time band Junip is going to release their first ever full-length album in September. The album is called Fields , and is being preceded by an EP, called Rope & Summit . The EP is free (see link below), and it's pretty darn good. If you already know and like Gonzales, then you'll know exactly what to expect - lots of gorgeous nylon-stringed guitar and shadowy vocals, wrapped up in complex and beautiful compositions. The main difference here is that his normally spare production gets turned up a notch with a full band [...]

Justin Vernon collaborates to close out MusicNow Festival in Cincinnati, OH.
The indie music community continues to lend its hand to Haiti. The latest example comes in the form of The Red Hot Organization , the charity behind last year's Dark Was The Night , which has sent an emergency grant of $150,000 to Partners in Health to support the ongoing relief effort in Haiti. Much of the money for this donation was taken from proceeds the compilation album, which was produced by Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National and released on 4AD Records last year. While Dark Was The Night 's profits [...]

Hey, this came up when I typed "Top 10" into a search, honest ... The Album of the Week this time around is the Dark Was the Night comp, a fantastic addition to any discog and 3 slabs of wax, at that. My Top-10, as usual, stuck a "rock" base but bounded all over the place. Ginger Baker , The Traveling Wilburys , Subtle , [...]

Continuing the 2009 countdown, here are the ones that didn't quite break the top 10 but that provided a sterling soundtrack to the year nonetheless. 20 ENTER SHIKARI - Common Dreads [...]

In recent years the crowd that is claiming "the album is dead" has grown louder and louder. We couldn't disagree more. As more and more people turn to iTunes and the Hype Machine to download the latest and greatest singles, we have stuck to the traditional album listening and found that there are still some truly great records being made these days. For most of this year we have been inundated by bands breaking into the world, mainstream artists trying to recapture their former glory, and indie rock "superstars" growing into their own, it has been exciting and fun and [...]

Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions - 'Through The Devil Softly' The problem with Hope Sandoval , is that she always sounds like Hope Sandoval. Not that it's a major problem when she sounds as swoonsomely gorgeous as this. More acoustic with than anything she did with Mazzy Star , 'Through The Devil Softly' is a slightly folkier take on the recognisably hazy, smoky, wistful late night stoner tone of her voice and songs. Seasick Steve - 'Man From Another Time' Stripping [...]

This Christmas week we are counting down our top 50 albums of 2009 taken from the personal lists of 35 of the State writers and photographers. No doubt, there will be tears, spilled milk, outcry, acceptance and surprises along the way. We hope you find something you overlooked in the course of the year. Our 40 to 31 list sees the first and last appearance of a compilation, a revered indie rapper, an experimental English shape-shifting popster, Africa's best Western-influenced band, an R&B legend, a "bored" US scuzzy-rocker and a forward-looking retro dance album. Albums of 2009: [...]

Speaking of snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes, I worked my last December day of the year on Friday, and now am settling in to two luscious weeks of time off over the holidays (one of the hidden benefits of working in academia!). Before the college closed, on one of the snowiest and coldest days of the year I went to the radio studio and recorded my third year-end appearance on NPR's World Cafe with David Dye , and we chatted about some of my favorite albums from this year. You can listen [...]
the time has come. i know the anticipation has been unbearable, and i apologize for that. i was originally going to post this on monday but i was so excited i just couldnt wait. my basic criteria for my top albums are based on how much i listened to that album on repeat after i heard it for the first time. because isnt that really the best sign of how much you like an album? i was going to do a best songs of 2009 list too, but i post my favorite songs every day. [...]

There's a distinct difference between 'best albums of the year' and 'favorite albums of the year.' Who am I to say what is the 'best' album? What makes an album better than the other? You've probably already figured out that I'm trying to say that music taste is subjective. The past 12 months have probably been one of the better years in music in a while. There were albums that defined genres (Merriweather Post Pavilion), albums that reinvented the bands sound (The Hazards of Love), albums that majorly disappointed (Mama, I'm Swollen), and albums that became a sign of what's [...]
