David Byrne and St. Vincent continue their brass-focused, ass-wriggling collaboration with Brass Tactics, an EP with this intriguing new track, two throwaway remixes and a pair of terrific live cuts. Download it free here. "Cissus," the original track, is a darkly intriguing surprise, with those horns reduced to playing long, elegiac lines. Even as St. Vincent (nee Annie Clark) offers [...]

Tuesday, May 14th marks the 61st birthday for David Byrne, a musician and humanitarian whose career is so prolific that I cannot imagine anyone disliking. But what work of the critic-proof artist's to queue up in celebration? Let's go with Jonathan Demme's rockumentary masterwork " Stop Making Sense ." It's the best thing to play in another tab while you're gearing down from the work day and opens with "Psycho Killer." Done. Argument's over. Plus, YouTube wants $1.99 for "True Stories," which is well worth it. But, ya know. Many happy returns, sir. [...]

TALKING HEADS are not only just that genre re-defining New Wave band of the 70s and 80s, but TALKING HEADS also happen to be the holders of Stop Making Sense , which is probably the greatest concert DVD to currently be in existence. Think I’m being mighty audacious? well hold up, and let me explain. Think of all those traditions of the 'Concert Film'. Think the over-longed audience pans, the blinding stage lights, the cock-straddling guitar solos, schizophrenic camera-cuts and the [...]

Now you can wear your fandom for your favorite 802s new wave pioneers right on your chest. Talking Heads and British designer Paul Smith have collaborated on a set of four limited edition t-shirts for Smith's stores. The "capsule collection" uses material provided by David Byrne himself, such as original art, backstage photographs, and album artwork. Three of the designs (see above) are currently available. One features Byrne's original sketch of the boxy suit made famous in Talking Heads' Stop Making Sense concert film. Another is a collage [...]

Below is an except from David Byrne's How Music Works , followed by a brief review. The excerpt is borrowed from a passage entitled "The New World", in which Byrne discusses the advent of the vinyl record, and the irreversible impact it had on the dissemination of music across cultures. Records were fairly cheap for much of the twentieth century-cheaper than a concert ticket. And as they became [...]
The term "supergroup" is often used to refer to a set of musicians who are best known in association with their respective bands - musicians who haven't necessarily operated as solitary acts in their own right, and are culled together to see what their individual untapped energies will create when synthesized. By contrast, when speaking [...]

It may take a few glances to pinpoint what exactly is off about the cover art on Love This Giant , a new collaboration between David Byrne and St. Vincen t released September 10 on 4AD and Todo Mundo . The former Talking Heads frontman and the beautiful indie pop star, pictured in black and white suits, make a striking pair - and once you notice their slightly modified jawlines, that off ness becomes not a bad thing, but simply a random weird addition to [...]
[photo courtesy of Amanda Hatfield ] "Heads up out there, this is David Byrne. During our show, we welcome picture taking, video recording, audio recording..." Whoa. From a taper's standpoint, that was some of the best news I'd heard in a long time. David Byrne's opening announcement at all of the shows on this current tour with St. Vincent has included that invitation, which we happily accepted for the Williamsburg Waterfront show on Saturday night. As these two amazing musicians tour in support of their collaborative album Love This Giant [...]

On Thursday the 20th of September, we attended a show at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Toronto that far surpassed our expectations. David Byrne and St. Vincent delivered a concert full of musical twists and turns along with beautiful arrangements. As they entered the stage, the twelve piece line up featuring an eight-piece brass section broke out into a refreshing version of their first single Who . David Byrne and Annie Clark took turns trading off on old classics and new favourites. Ranging from St. Vincent's lovely Marrow to Talking Heads' Burning Down the [...]

Even though I've recently downsized my collection, I still own a frightening number of books about music. And even though I profess a certain disdain for writing that gets too far into technicalities, it's hard for me to not pay attention (at least initially) when a new book comes out. So after reading the first chapter of David Byrne's book [...]
