About 200 of you guys participated in our annual readers poll, and the results were tight. You had the chance to vote for 5 albums, and I gave each album a point value, decreasing with each vote. So first place got 5 points, second place got 4, etc... The race was very close between Frank Ocean & Tame Impala, but in the end, Frank Ocean took home the Orange gold. All in all, the taste of you faithful bunch alligns quite well with mine, minus Mumford & Sons. In total, 252!! albums were voted for, which is insane. [...]
We debated, we disagreed, we came up with our collective best 50 albums of 2012.

photo by Dave Lichterman The xx released this new video for "Chained" off their most recent album Coexist . If the lyrics and male/female vocal layers don't get you, the beauty of this video added to the music certainly will. Directed by the Young Replicant Team from The Creator's Project, the video is as minimal but deeply affecting as the band's sound. Toro y Moi , or Chaz to his friends, released this blurping single, "So Many [...]
► Aimee Mann visits the Wilshire Ebell Theatre behind her new album "Charmer," yet another addition to her catalog of smart, tuneful works. Field Report supports. Above is the video for "Labrador," which is hilarious in the way that only Mann can be. It's a shot-by-shot recreation of her ’Til Tuesday hit back in the day — you should read about it . ► The xx and 2:54 play Hollywood Forever Cemetery. ► David Byrne and St. Vincent team up at the Greek Theater. ► And Meiko , Bobby Long, Anna Nelson and [...]

With all the craziness of music blogging, from concerts to press releases to interviews to festivals, it can be hard to find time to sit down, listen to an album and give it an honest, thorough review. With that in mind, we came up with the Reviews Roundup , a way for us to look back at all of the major releases in the past month and give them an on-the-spot review. Whether we like them or not, we'll spout out a quick blurb about the album to give an overall impression of what makes it good or bad [...]

We've already listened to the album about 5 times. So if you're a Helio Sequence fan, you won't be disappointed with Negotiations . The variation with this album is that there [...]

A few of my favorite new releases this week, including new stuff from The Raveonettes , Seapony , The Vaccines , David Byrne and St. Vincent , and the highly anticipated sophomore effort from The xx . As always, be sure to visit Largehearted Boy [...]

It's a mind-blowing list of new releases on perhaps the biggest release date of the year, so let's get started. You're going to need all the time you can get to pick these up. First up, the long-awaited second album by The xx is potentially KEXP listeners' album of the year. While it's but one of a number of hotly anticipated this year - others come from Dirty Projectors, Animal Collective, and Grizzly Bear - The xx strip down their sound to a sultry murmur, like a whisper in your ear. Oliver Sims and Romy Madley-Croft never sounded [...]

David Byrne's voice sounds as timeless as ever on his latest album that sees the ex-Talking Heads chief team up with Ms. Annie Clark (aka St. Vincent). The album plays like a vanity project for the duo and proves to be a challenging listen that you can decide for yourself over here . The xx "Coexist" on their latest album. The much highly anticipated followup to their debut album that was on non-stop repeat for a full year after the release date is scheduled to hit the streets next week. Jamie xx's [...]

Frank Yang So as I mentioned in passing last week , I spent the Labour Day long weekend up in Rouyn-Noranda, Québec, attending the Festival de musique émergente en Abitibi-Témiscamingue , henceforth referred to as FME. It's okay if neither the where or the what don't mean much to you - they didn't mean much to me before I agreed to attend. Getting up to speed requires a little geography and history, so if you're sitting comfortably, then we'll begin. Wikipedia can give you the vitals, but basically Rouyn-Noranda is a [...]
You know summer is well and truly over when the humidity recedes, the days start getting shorter and the big album releases start coming thick and fast. Yep, it's almost time for the September rush, and this year the crop is particularly good — so much so, in fact, that we've expanded our usual round-up of 10 albums you need to hear in the month to come to a bumper list of 15. As ever, we've also rounded up the rest of the month's notable releases: the good, the bad, and the ugly. So tell us: what are you looking [...]
