Greetings from just off the coast of Cuba, my friends. We've awoke to another gorgeous day of weather on the high seas as we motor back to Fort Lauderdale. Everyone seems surprisingly alert for Day Five of this marathon adventure and we've got an intense day and night ahead that leads into the dreaded disembarkation calls over the PA at 7AM tomorrow morning. I think we're at the point in the trip, where I can officially declare Jam Cruise 9 better than last year's event on a musical level. While the "mindblown" factor of my first [...]
The lineup for Jam Cruise 9 will now also feature Brock Butler from Perpetual Groove and David Gans from that old Grateful Dead hour radio show. They join the already impressive lineup of funky brass and Dead-resurrectors setting sail for Honduras and Mexico come this January. Here's a second helping of Donovan's atmospheric classic ( click here to see Volume One ). In chronological order, here are ten versions. As always, I recommend the zip, but you can cherry pick. Zipfile Julie Driscoll and Brian Auger (1967) 1 2 Vanilla Fudge (1968) 1 [...]

This week, we have the long overdue Cover Wars debut from legendary British rockers Dire Straits. Sultans Of Swing was the band's first single off their first album, which was self-titled and released in 1978. In The Fender Stratocaster Handbook: How To Buy, Maintain, Set Up, Troubleshoot, and Modify Your Strat , Mark Knopfler shares how Sultans Of Swing almost had an entirely different melody, funny to think if the song would have still been popular with the alternate structure. Knopfler says no. I originally [...]
I'll never forget the day late Grateful Dead keyboardist Brent Mydland passed away in 1990. I was playing hockey at Camp Westmont when a bunkmate's brother came down the hill to tell us Brent had died. Now, I'll be honest - I didn't know a thing about the band at the time, but I wanted to find out. One of my Deadhead counselors turned me onto David Gans and Peter Simon's well-written biography of the band, Playing in the Band, and I was immediately fascinated by the history of the band. [...]

We do not as of now have a winner to report from last week when we looked at six covers of Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys . At the time of publishing this post, The Bridge & Mr. Blotto are literally tied, so if you haven't already: Go listen and place your vote. This week's song, originally by Jimmy Cliff, first appeared on the 1971 album Another Cycle but is more well known for its inclusion on the 1972 The Harder They Come [...]
