Xbox One. There is no doubt that electronic music, in the form of the so-called branded EDM "movement," is experiencing extraordinary popularity and momentum. Rather predictably, EDM has produced some interesting responses from insiders, outsiders, and the media, many of which are as absurd as they are opportunistic. And, all of it is leading, I think, to a crash. For now, there is the EDM bubble. In order to place the current EDM bubble in proper context, it's important to revisit Charles Mackay's " Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds ." Originally, I bought the book because of [...]
As plenty of commentators (including Flavorwire ) have pointed out, Daft Punk's sudden rise into the commercial stratosphere coincided with the adoption of their now-iconic robot personas. Their journey from being middle-ranking producers with a flair for the crossover market to globe-conquering fauxbotic superstars started the minute they decided to grab a pair of converted motorcycle helmets and pretend to be androids. Why is it, though, that the US market seems to need its electronic music to be made by people with such strong visual identities? Why do we need our producers to have gimmicks and wear masks?

24 days left! That's right boys and girls, Daft Punk's new album is on the horizon. I've been talking to some folks about their thoughts of Daft Punk's latest single, Get Lucky , and disappointingly they aren't too fond of the song - they say Pharrell is boring. Nonetheless, if those naysayers are reading this there's plenty more to get excited about. So for the next 24 days WDPK is going to feature one Daft Punk song or remix a day up until May 21st. From 1997 all the way to 2012, the [...]

Prior to Ultra Music Festival 2011, Consequence of Sound' s Editor-in-Chief, and one-time South Floridian, Michael Roffman left me with the simple words of wisdom: "Keep your eyes open." The advice seems obvious for properly covering a festival, but when that festival has seven stages, is flooded with beautiful bodies from every corner of the globe, and is located in one of the most picturesque locations in the United States (only bested by the view from the hill at Sasquatch!), the task can be a little daunting. Toss in dozens of world-renowned after-parties spread across some of the world's best [...]

The Grammy Awards are set to take place tomorrow and dance music aficionados are left only pondering which heavyweights will bring home the gold. Skrillex was the big winner last year, taking home three wins of his five nominations. With three more nominations this season, will Skrillex be seeing triple again? Or will Deadmau5 take home a pair of trophies? How about Avicii? Swedish House Mafia? Al Walser? Dance artists represent four categories this year; Best Dance Recording, Best Dance/Electronica Album, Producer Of The Year, Non-Classical, and Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical. Dancing Astronaut takes a look at the categories, [...]
As we embark into what is obviously not the end of the world, I would like to give you some food for thought. When did you start settling for mediocrity? When did apathy become acceptable? When did the DJ become the promoter? When did DJ's start aspiring to become the next Milli Vanilli? Out of [...]

2012 has been an exciting year for dance music, the scene has grown beyond any of our comprehensions, supplanting itself in popular culture, fueling the soundtrack of commercials, sitcoms, and even a Disney movie - shaking the foundation popular culture by establishing a new wave of music consumer. At the forefront of everything have been the artists, the true pioneers of the electronic dance music wave. With a scene as large and expansive as EDM, it was hard to honor only 50 – for every David Guetta or Calvin Harris there are droves of aspiring bedroom producers all doing their [...]
It’s inevitable that countdowns will always spark controversy, that’s just the nature of the beast. Some tracks will be snubbed, some overlooked, and some ranked higher than you may have expected. We’ve already gone over our ranking criteria at length but despite our own self-imposed guidelines , 2012 proved to be more difficult to rank than years past. With the EDM explosion officially in full swing throughout the year, the sheer number of releases was mind numbing, and — consequently — nearly impossible to rank. There has been no greater challenge for the editors [...]

With the whitewash of 'EDM' into mainstream America has come the perching of once relatively new-school Dance Producers into celebrity status. It shows with this years nominations filled with relatively youngin's Skrillex, Steve Aoki and Deadmau5 with some glimpses of the 'good' with Chemical Brothers up for a nom' with 'Don't Think' and Kaskades 'Fire & Ice'. In all honesty none of these records really stood out for me in the past year, nor many other releases... in my mind Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs 'Trouble' was up there, as was Hot Chips 'In Our Heads' [...]
Dance music's presence in last year's Grammy awards was undeniable, marking the first time a DJ had been nominated for the Best New Artist category. The DJs and producers who were big in our world had finally crossed over into mainstream relevance by way of Skrillex's five nominations and three wins . This year, Skrillex received three nods, each in the categories he won last year. Diplo's nomination for Best Producer is also an accolade that is long overdue. Only three highly-recognizable dance music artists were nominated in 2012, but this time around there's a much [...]
