I need a moment to be brutally honest: When I was in middle school, I was probably the biggest M.O.P. fan ever. To say this drove my parents insane would be an understatement. I might have been the most awkward, skinny white kid in the history of awkward, skinny white kids, but I had always had M.O.P. on my MP3 player. ( Back in '98, when no one had them. My first one was 32Mb, and it plugged into the serial port. Yes... before USB .) Download: NatNaiel - [...]
In 1994, Common's "I Used To Love H.E.R." traced Hip-Hop's timeline and pointed out one of the music's major shift with the lyric "She said, 'Afrocentricity, was of the past...'" The early '90s saw artists who placed an emphasis on being Black in America and revitalized a spirit unseen since Civil Rights era. Here are five albums by groups who wore their pride on their sleeves and shared it through music. [...]
So what if I'm smokin' weed onstage and doing what I gotta do? It's not me shooting nobody, stabbing nobody, killing nobody. I would have to agree with WOUHH on this point; its been hard to follow Dead Prez these last several years, even though they have always maintained their socially conscious and politically charged music. Lets Get Free was a masterpiece; a musical and lyrical journey of epic proportions that hails as one of my favorite albums of all time. Yet their follow up projects just never seemed to reach me as deep as the debut. But as with all my Hip Hop heroes I never wrote them off. At any moment they can create something that [...]
Concert Review: dead prez, December 21, McPherson Square
Love it, hate it, or tolerate it, the Occupy Movement has made a lasting mark in 2011. I'm of the 'tolerate it' camp most of the time (as long as they don't block the Metro they can camp out as long as they please), but the Washington, DC's McPherson Square installation of the Occupy movement actually rose in my esteem December 21st. As I was walking back from lunch to my j-o-b (shh, don't tell the protestors!) I could not help but stop when I noticed theOccupiers had managed to put together a pretty impressive concert. [...]
