Photos and words by Ethan Shvartzman After working and touring their asses off - opening for Muse, Garbage and others, locals Dead Sara headlined the El Rey Theatre. The band set the venue ablaze with a larger-than-life, in-your-face set which included an incredible cover of Rage Against the Machine's "Killing in the Name." The show was sold out (of course) and was packed with a sweaty crowd who danced, rocked, and moshed. All the while, leader singer Emily Armstrong felt as if she were flying over our heads like a rock goddess, supported by her [...]

Photos and words by Debi Del Grande Friday evening, open bar, food trucks, blankets on the grass, screening of the incredible Sound City (which is a must see if you love music documentaries) and live performances by DIIV and Dead Sara. 72andSunny put together this little extravaganza under the stars (they were there somewhere). The unique bandshell is a like a mini Hollywood Bowl with an incredible sound system. A little ironic that on the anniversary of Kurt Cobain's death, DIIV performed. Not only was Nirvana an integral part of Sound [...]
Touring with the likes of rock giants Muse has got to be both exciting and nerve wracking all at the same time, which is why we were interested in knowing a little bit more about the female led rock band, Dead Sara . So, before their show in Tampa, we were able to fire over some questions via email and get to know this up-and-coming four piece. If you're not familiar with the group just yet, know that their music is powerful, guitar driven, and features wailing gritty vocals from lead singer Emily Armstrong. Their live show in Tampa [...]
"Lemon Scent," the third single from Dead Sara's self-titled debut in 2012, owns a special place in our hearts and ears, because it was the song that introduced us to the L.A. quartet , almost two years ago. The foursome's new video for the song, which features singer Emily Armstrong and lead guitarist Siouxsie Medley duking it out in the boxing ring, is pretty appropriate. Dead Sara's bluesy metal is nothing if not pugilistic. Armstrong, Medley, bassist Chris Null and drummer Sean Friday are currently opening for Muse on the U.K. band's national tour. And, probably, not [...]

There were albums I loved, albums I liked, albums I appreciated and albums I avoided in 2012. Because of my regional focus, I spent an inordinate amount of time with music from Los Angeles artists . And strangely for me, a lot of the hyped bands failed to resonate; stuck in traffic, I'd rather have played that Killers album or one of the Green Day discs than Alt-J. I'm sure it was just a phase. For what it's worth, my favorite 20 albums of the year: [...]
What a year. More than 140 Los Angeles-sired albums passed through the Buzz Bands LA headphones this year, not counting EPs, mixtapes and singles. Judging from the detritus at my desk — handwritten lists, stacks of CDs, press releases — and my unopened emails, there were a lot more out there. It came in all flavors. 2012 was a robust year for folkies and faux-folkies, hard rock and harder rock, for electro and popgazers, for scads of seemingly interchangeable garage-rockers, for radio bands and scruffy DIYers, for electronic dance music and electronic dumb music, for R&B and glitch&B [...]

Dead Sara is in the holiday spirit — the L.A. quartet of Emily Armstrong, Siouxsie Medley, Chris Null and Sean Friday has had a 2012 worthy of special place on Santa's list. Their new holiday single "Snow in Los Angeles," recorded at Dave Grohl's Studio 606 and written for Armstrong's mother, comes out on iTunes on Tuesday. Let it snow.

Yesterday the Vans Warped Tour made its first return to London since 1999. We didn't go. We do know some people who did go, and their reactions on Twitter ranged from "Oh my God! Onesies everywhere!" to "Lasted just an hour at Warped" . We know that (some) of us here at Thrash Hits have a reputation as being surly No Fun Club -types, but by gosh, did we not see this as a challenge to make a listenable Sunday Spotify Slaylist about it. Oh God, did we try. [...]
Filed under: News , Exclusive C05 Media If you listen to mainstream rock radio stations, it's safe to say you've heard Dead Sara 's "Weatherman" pouring through the airwaves. The Los Angeles rockers released their self-titled debut album in April 2012 and watched it peak at No. 16 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. The four-piece, led by vocalist Emily Armstrong, serve as further proof that gender doesn't matter when it comes to who's fronting a good band. [...]

For the past eight years, Riot Fest has slowly evolved into one of Chicago's most intriguing festivals -- not only because of it's consistent slant towards punk and metal, but because it was in the fall and in a slew of our favorite locals clubs. This year, Riot Fest mastermind Mike ‘Riot’ Petryshyn has taken the growing event to the next logical step -- out of the clubs and expanding into a full fledged multi-day, and (sort of) multi-city festival. The kind that, if this year's edition proves [...]
Dead Sara - Weatherman It’s been a while since I’ve heard a track and just stopped and said, ‘god damn’! Lupe did it the other day and upon hearing this, Dead Sara did it again for me today. It has been a good week! Check this track out! http://www.deadsara.com/

By Dani Miskell The Sunset Strip Music Festival fell short of the standard set the previous two years, and by the end of Saturday's street festival it was apparent that the festivities offered a lot more for party animals than it did music fans. Sure, you had the Strip’s iconic venues and delicious food trucks to satiate the appetite in upper-80-degree weather, but the overall energy of the festival was dismal and assorted chaos (including sets that started woefully late) took a lot of edge off the day.
