"Summer Forgets Me" comes to us from the oddly monikered Deas Vail , an Arkansas-based indie-pop quintet with a rock edge led by frontman, cherubic vocalist Wes Blaylock and keyboardist (and wife) Laura. With Wes' boyish falsetto and the band's complex and angular art/pop -- reminiscent at times of an emo-tinged version of Danish modern prog purveyors Mew -- their self-titled album distinguishes itself from the slew of energized and eager indie longplayers with an instinctive focus on songcraft. "Summer Forgets Me" rocks when it needs to, drifts and soars at the right moments and [...]

From the moment I heard the opening of Copeland 's Beneath Medicine Tree riding along in a friend's car, I knew I had to get my hands on the album. With its melancholic hospital theme, it was a perfect example of therapy through music; it was there for me during some of the lonelier years away at college. I had the opportunity to follow the band throughout their career, from small the-floor-might-collapse venues to larger ones upon the release of the more pop-influenced In Motion . Admittedly behind on their more recent records, I still couldn't [...]

It was a bittersweet show last Wednesday (March 10, 2010) at Toronto's Opera House. Copeland fans gathered to watch them preform what may be the band's last show in Toronto EVER. The band, hailing from Lakeland, Florida, has been active for about 9 years. Copeland announced of the band's "move on from Copeland and follow other paths in our lives" on October 29, 2009 on their MySpace blog . The show began shortly after 8PM with Deas Vail, Person L, and I Can Make a Mess Like Nobody's Business opening. [...]

Deas Vail (Latin for "Humble Servant of God") frontman Wes Blaylock's falsetto blew me away the first time I heard them sing their song "Shoreline." It completely comes out of nowhere and is unique in the music landscape today. Teamed up with his wife, Laura, on the piano and synth, they combine to create a one-of-a-kind sound. They've recently finished a recording produced by Mark Lee Townshend

Days like today are the reason I built that "EPs are fair game" clause into the project. The snow canceled my first class of the day, allowing me to sleep in. But the snow was not so kind as to cancel my second, far less enjoyable class for which I still had significant amounts of work to get done. So on my way out the door to start that work I threw this disc into my CD player (I was feeling old school today) and took care of business. Deas Vail provide a great blend of [...]
!["Patrol" Picks 50 Records That Have Gotta Have Faith Of Some Sort [Year-end Analysis]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1417372_lg.jpg)
Earlier this month, we took a look at Christianity Today 's best-of list, which seemed to judge records on an "is this Christian enough?" scale as much as it did musical merit. To balance that out, the online music mag Patrol serves up a list that looks at vaguer connections between faith and music. Patrol started off analyzing the fringes of the Christian music biz (it was called CCM Patrol then), but now it has a broader aim, tackling New York City from a faith-based perspective. Their list's intro shows their disdain [...]
