The Disco Zombies From: The Past The Disco Zombies compilation Drums Over London is one of the more surprising albums to be reviewing in 2011. Having released a couple of singles in the late 70s to mass indifference and poor record sales they're more obscure than an 8 track in a pimped up gangsta wagon. But, thanks to those musical historians at Acute Records, The Disco Zombies have been rescued from obscurity for a new generation to explore. [...]

Being particularly bad at witty interchanges of conversation with anyone I may fancy, I find that maintaining my personal source of banter paramount. So the name Banter Thief's filled me with a dread. However upon listening to the music of Scottish band The Banter Thieves my fears were soon absolved. Their tracks are energetic and easy to listen to, the kind of tracks you can happily find yourself bouncing around to at a gig. Read more..

The last week or so has been absolutely sensational for gigs in Glasgow. Some i did make, some i didn't make and one got cancelled altogether. Over the course of 6 days from the Tuesday (14th December) to Sunday (the 19th) there were some pretty amazing shows performed and played throughout Glasgow and it's various musical locations. Below i've compiled a list of the best gigs and included MP32s (where available), videos and links. The week should have began with Civil Civic but they sadly had to cancel their gig at The 13th Note last Monday. But since [...]
Celebrating their 8th birthday, Death Disco crank up the bass pressure this Saturday November 20th at The Arches, Glasgow. The Count & Sinden top the bill, alongside an artist showcase from uber-cool Parisian label ABRACADA, featuring Brodinski, Mikix The Cat, The Aikiu and more. Advance tickets and info available here.

Duncan Stump (Mock) and Nick Woolfson (Toof) are two of the UK's most creative music producers. Having made a name for themselves via 12" releases on James Murphy's DFA Recordings and their own Tiny Sticks imprint; the pair have forged a reputation for brilliantly off-kilter, disco-fuelled house grooves that are laced with originality. Enough originality in fact to have caught the attention of Hot Chip, Zero 7, Holy Ghost! and Groove Armada who've all come calling for their remix services. I realise [...]

Negativ Magick are back in form with another round of perfected death disco edits. I never thought Id hear a club ready Primitive Calculators track, but here it is. Sweaty, thumping, fleshy beats beneath hard visceral vox; this is just fucking mean. Catch these guys supporting Canyons at New Guernica this coming Thursday (1st April) here in Melbourne. See you there. MP3: Primitive Calculators - Pumping Ugly Muscle (Negativ Magick Edit) MP3: Death in June - Foretold (Negativ Magick Edit)

I try not to turn this blog into yet another mouthpiece for the completely uninspiring dance music industry, but I'm completely smitten with these two admitted outsiders. Erik XVI - Unionens Sista Dagar (Brassica Remix) Kudos to 20jfg for tipping on Brassica (and their utterly thrilling " The Centre ") oh so many months ago. Their recent remix of Erik XVI has a lot more stomp and less swagger than I've heard from them previously, but this meeting of giants has produced one of [...]

Probably the best xmas present I got this year was delivered to me by the, sadly now deceased, Ripped in Glasgow blog. Mr Ivan Smagghe sent in a list of 'lost classics' in amongst which was this gem straight from the Boccacio dancefloor. Logic System - Crash (Kaos Edit) Read the whole post here . Download all Ivan's lost classics here [...]

Darktown Strutters have been burning up the net with their devilish vibe ever since 20JFG dropped them on their unsuspecting readers earlier this summer. It's fitting we revisit these possessed Texans with you now as we celebrate October Armageddon. Voted #1 "lethal injection" song by Texas death row inmates, I couldn't imagine better music to be snuffed out to. Darktown Strutters - Lucifer Rising In keeping with the Strutter's homage to Kenneth Anger's "Lucifer Rising" , here's the entire trance inducing short film for those [...]

To get yourselves started on some fantastic music, I suggest first hunting down the three New York Noise Compilations. Every one is bursting with amazing late 70's/early 80's New York No Wave, Death Disco, and Noise Rock. From there move on to at least the first two Mutant Disco comps (the first one is the best). Then you can begin to get a feel for the songs from under the dancefloor. Starting you off here is the aptly titled 'Death Disco' by Public Image Ltd. (John Lyndon's band after the Sex Pistols). MP3: [...]

Tell us what was the name of the record label that Alan McGee founded after Creation and email your answer to giveaway@state.ie by 6pm Friday. Random [...]

I'm not sure if Ed Banger is over the top, or beyond the pale, or in a ditch, or blissfully unaware... could be all of these options together. I'd suggest the argument that a new way forward was needed was best crystallized by Bidabibi's total evisceration of Busy P's track a few months back. Whether you side up with that view or not, there's no doubt the label now sits at the point where it needs to decide whether to either rest on laurels, or find something new or dare we say authentic. Say what you [...]

Last Thursday I was at The Fillmore in SF to catch Panther (always awesome) open for Architecture in Helsinki (who were great), but what I didn't know was that I'd walk away with a new musical obsession. Glass Candy (Ida No and Johnny Jewel) hit me square in the face with death/disco/electronica; their show sounded amazing, their stage presence looked perfect. They've got 4 songs for free download over at their myspace page , here are the first two. ::: Glass Candy - Beautific (f/ 2007 Beatbox [...]
