Kieran Hebden/Four Tet.

The best thing about running a new feature like If You Buy One Thing This Week is that we can make up the rules as we go along. Shall we do a fancy limited-edition 73 single this week? Should we do a big new album that's come out this week that's got a tsunami of pre-release hype around it? Should we do an old classic that's suddenly back in the public eye for some reason? Or should we do a tape/download release from a two-man powerviolence/noise band from Milwaukee that you've almost certainly never heard of? Yeah, [...]
Fight Like Apes played a couple of live dates over the weekend, including a headline slot at Dolan's Warehouse in Limerick and absolutely packing them in at the Globe for the Camden Crawl Dublin. They're playing Cyprus Avenue in Cork on Saturday, which should be entertaining. I've seen them there [Read more]

IYES return with this glance at "Daddy" from their forthcoming EP release. With little music released to date, "Daddy" offers a glance through the mind's eye at their latest electro rave inspiration. IYES - Daddy (demo) IYES ( Soundcloud ) Rating 8.5

Enjoy.

Max Bell may have written positive words about a Drake album once. There are a number of early articles/blog posts/pieces of writing I'd like deleted, wiped from existence. Some of those pieces could've benefited from more time spent behind the keyboard, some might've needed more editing from whoever was kind enough to let me write for them, and others should've never seen the light of day. I might look back on this post the same way. That's how it goes. You can say similar things about two leaks that have been circulating the net in [...]

A track that 'has stereo guitar looping, with a lashing of an old Italian funk break, an African a capella from the wonderful Miriam Makeba, a deep bass line, bongos and djembas and a wholesome brass section' you say? Why, absolutely why not! Oxgam, a spectacularly finely refined composition for a supposed 'demo', came as my perfunctory introduction to Nepheww – aka Londoner Jacob Taylor – only a couple hours ago although it's not left my attentions since. Its beat decidedly Afro ; its wompy bass end bottomless, it makes for a wondrous convergence of gritty Northern European [...]

The Harrington Blues are 5 lads from Stamford/Peterborough, bringing their Britpop and Rock'n'Roll sound to the masses. You can check out a demo of one of their new songs called "Last Chance". Follow / [FACEBOOK]

The name Television has popped up here a couple of times recently. James Brooks from Land Observations name-checked them in his Six Of The Best article and a couple of weeks ago I was comparing the laconic vocals and snaking guitar sound of Charlie Boyer & the Voyeurs latest single to that of Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd. All this has coincided with the old iPod (well, it's not that old - 3 and a half years - but I suppose that's ancient in tech-speak) refusing to sync any new additions to [...]

Manchester's The 1975 have been a topic in many new music conversations this past year. Now the band follow up their much lauded SXSW saga with a new and definitive take on "The City," the lead track (and demo) from their debut Facedown EP release from August 2012. We recently caught up with frontman Matt Healy to discuss the new recording from their upcoming (to be named) fourth EP which drops May 20th. We also discussed a bit about their debut album, affinity for vintage gear, their first SXSW experience and more. Sample "The City" and check out [...]
The Strokes have unleashed a new album into the world and on first listen I can't really grasp what their vision for the album was. Their guitar/synth mashup style has now seemingly eschewed their wall of fuzz trademark and Julian's vocals are even more unintelligible than usual. On the opening track, Tap Out, it feels like the boys are gassed and are consciously trolling their fans, peers, and label. The song has the pep and bounce you would expect, but the formula is missing something. On previous efforts it felt as if The Strokes didn't care an ounce and yet [...]
Beatsmith Hot Sugar drops a demo for the track "And the walls came tumbling down." The dreary and emotive piano playing sampled on the track was originally featured in this video , but it seems to have now made it into a full-fledged beat, which is getting a release on the forthcoming GOD's Hand EP. Enjoy!

We don't usually do things like this, but since this is clearly 30 years old anyway, we're doing it. Somewhere, somehow The Smiths ' first demo emerged recently and gave us the first peak at what they sounded like at their most vulnerable, rawest, and... let's say crummiest. While I'm relatively sure that someone will eventually re-master this recording in the future at some point, you can hear it here and now the way it was originally recorded. Then again, most of these songs were already properly recorded and released so it's also possible that it won't get that [...]
Often a bands name is a statement of how they see themselves, sometimes it's simply to grab the attention or to make a statement. Rarely a bands name is so synonymous with the music; a wonderful embodiment of what you hear ... Continue reading

Whew! It has been way too long since I've done a Smooth Sax of the Week . I've really let this feature slip away from me. Thankfully, Panama released a new, sax heavy demo that was destined to get the spotlight here. "Can't Believe It's Happening" may not be a final product, but it sure is smooth. The warm, airy instrumental track is the perfect backing for the saxophone to work its magic. Tropical vibes set the scene, and some light vocals really give the song that signature Panama [...]

beyonce - bow down / i been on with a simple instagram photo (seen above) and a link, mrs carter offered up a demo track produced by hot producer hit boy who was behind bey's hubby jay-z smash 'ni**as in paris' with kanye west. though this kind of goes in a non-sequitur direction by the end, it does show us that she is not going all matronly with her upcoming sound! i am curious! http://feeds.feedburner.com/Wo ngiesMusicWorld

mutya keisha siobhan - lay down in swimming pools how hot is this! taking the kendrick lamar track 'swimming pools (drank)' and then putting their tight vocals on top of it, the original sugababes are really building anticipation for their eventual official release. perhaps this will show up on a mixtape, but hurry up and put out stuff already! want to hear the original smash? check it out below: kendrick lamar - swimming pools (drank) the song is HOT! Foxes , the nom de guerre of beguiling London songstress Louisa Rose Allen, put her shimmering stamp on the music scene with the release of her Warrior EP on Neon Gold last year. Her new demo "The Unknown" is an insouciant, gorgeous reminder of her place in the label's impeccable club of girl-pop chart-toppers. Like the tracks that made you love Marina & The Diamonds and Ellie Goulding, "The Unknown" is as complex as it is catchy; the song's radiant, glittering instrumentation imprints itself in your head, while its urgent and barely [...]
