When I think about the most "American" artists - whatever that means - my consideration often gravitates toward authors like William Faulkner, whose emotional prose shaded a number of complex feelings in all of their bluntness, and photographers like William Eggleston, whose photography truly captured the decay of traditionalism and the prevalence of Southern melancholy. The Oxford (Mississippi) based collective, Cats Purring , are a group of artists that I'm becoming increasingly obsessed with. Nothing, I repeat nothing, they've released so far, (at least the jams I've heard), have even come close to disappointing. This track came along and my worst fears have been realised; I am in love, and it's likely to remain a love unrequited. I've slept on Dent May for a while now, but after watching this stellar acoustic performance of "That Feeling" (man, what a great bass line!), I'm 100% on this Mississippi cat's bandwagon. May's newest release is a 7" off Paw Tracks. "Fun" may be the A-side, but it's the sweet retro cheese of the B-side "Wedding Day" that has me hitting play over and over again. With his latest single, Dent May is really rolling out the smoothness. It's like he's taken a bunch of charming 70s synth pop memorabilia and flattened it into a piece of clear 7'' vinyl using a drum machine, some cosmic synths, a pair of platforms and a Technicolor yacht. Yes, it's that smooth. The lead track, 'Fun', is pure unadulterated nail-a-smile-to-your-face inoffensive pop. There's nothing pretentious about it – the title describes it perfectly. Earlier today the new tune from DENT MAY 's forthcoming 73 on PAW TRACKS was released to stream online. The new track, Wedding Day , tells the story of a sister and her feelings towards her older sister's wedding day; without meaning to sound lazy, the track is unashamedly feel good. Dent May's last album The Good Feeling Music of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukelele was, as the title suggests, simple pop songs played on the ol' uke.
