Dinosaur Jr. – “Entertainment” (Phoenix Cover)

It's tough to say why Phoenix are selling Dinosaur Jr.'s cover of their new song " Entertainment " as a remix rather than a straight-up cover; as far as I can tell, Dino Jr. keep no elements of Phoenix's original version of the song intact. Instead, J Mascis turns their gleaming, precision-engineered pop song into a slow, gorgeously stoned contemplation, replete with quietly blazing guitar solo. As covers go, though, it's a pretty stunning thing, and I'm pretty sure I like it more than the original song. Download it below. Read More... [...]

Dinosaur Jr. – “Pierce The Morning Rain” Video (Feat. Henry Rollins)

[author-name] Dinosaur Jr. don't show up in their video for "Pierce The Morning Rain," a bleary jam from their 2012 album I Bet On Sky . Instead, director Scott Jacobson gives us actor James Urbaniak playing a suburban dad who becomes addicted to blasting music through massive subwoofers, mostly because that bass makes him feel like he's fighting Henry Rollins. Comedian Maria Bamford plays his wife, who isn't sure what to make of the whole thing. Any music video where Rollins gets to throw headbutts [...]

Dinosaur Jr. – “Watch The Corners” Video (Feat. Tim Heidecker)

Stereogum Dinosaur Jr. go the Funny Or Die route for their new video for " Watch The Corners. " The band themselves only show up in digitally blurred cameo form. Instead, we see the story of a teenage girl who works at a supermarket and falls in with a bad boy who turns everything he touches into digital blurcles. Internet weirdo-comedy god Tim Heidecker plays the protective father, who finds an immensely satisfying way to respond. The Director Brothers direct, and you can watch it below. [...]

Watch J Mascis Interviewed By Portlandia‘s Feminist Bookstore Lady

Watch J Mascis Interviewed By Portlandia‘s Feminist Bookstore Lady Stereogum J Mascis is god , but he's also a notoriously difficult interview ; he's known for being reticent and awkward and prickly. But maybe that's just the milieu of the exchange? Maybe he'd be a bit more comfortable talking to someone not necessarily concerned with professional demeanor? Here, Candace, of Portland's fine feminist bookstore Women & Women First (aka Fred Armisen of Portlandia ), does a brief segment with J, and the results are ... no worse than any Spin [...]

Dinosaur Jr. Albums From Worst To Best

Stereogum Of all the bands closely associated with The Year Punk Broke , Dinosaur Jr. is simultaneously amongst the most enduring and enigmatic. Singer, principal songwriter, and lead guitarist J Mascis was an introverted frontman with autocratic tendencies. Original bass player Lou Barlow was a sensitive, thin-skinned songwriting talent of his own, whose personality clashed persistently with Mascis's controlling brooding. Even as the three-piece (along with drummer Patrick "Murph" Murphy) made landmark records, the antipathy became ever more severe, leading inexorably to Barlow's dismissal [...]

Dinosaur Jr. – “Watch The Corners”

Dinosaur Jr. – “Watch The Corners” Stereogum Today, Dinosaur Jr. came through with the first single for the forthcoming I Bet On Sky , signifying the group's third new release since 2007. The track, "Watch The Corners," is a song that hones in on a clear-headed melody more than their most famous stuff, but that doesn't mean there isn't room for a little bit of soaring guitar freak-outery at the end. Hear it at Rolling Stone . I Bet On Sky is out 9/18 on [...]

Dinosaur Jr. I Bet On Sky Details

Dinosaur Jr. I Bet On Sky Details Stereogum Ever since reforming the original lineup back in 2005, Dinosaur Jr. have proven to be a huge exception to the rule that reunited bands can't recapture the old magic. Back in the day, we always heard stories that these guys hated each other, but they've once again become a ridiculously consistent touring unit, and they've released two absolutely great albums that find them kicking right back into their inimitable old sound without missing a beat. And in September, they'll return with a new one called I [...]
