Album Review: In the past it seemed like I always had a good new punk album within reach but over the years that ease of access has miserably dwindled. That of course doesn't mean that quality punk rock is [...]

Dirtnap Records has announced tomorrow's release of a three song EP of loud, chaotic pop from Seattle's Little Cuts . The band features Dave Hernandez of Scared of Chaka and (more recently and famously) the Shins . Dirtnap had the following to say about the release " A-side is a slow building pop jam that would not have sounded too out of place in Broadcast Oblivion's (Dave's underrated post-Scared Of Chaka pre-Shins band) set, backed with 2 garage stompers on the B-side. Expect more from this [...]

It is becoming increasingly difficult to not describe a band of early 20-somethings in terms of the homage they're paying to some other band. For the most part I'm not entirely put off by it, but I will say the continuing trend towards, maybe unconscious, imitation grates on me a bit. Something Fierce latches their [...]

In the past I've expressed fears that the cyclical nature of music is slowly bringing us back towards the woe-begone days of power punk and ska. What I have never mentioned though is the idea that even though the cycle might whip is back in to the mess, the context for which the "mess" exists [...]

The first salvo from the Mind Spiders came with last year's World's Destroyed 73. It was packed with four great songs and no one was sure if this was a one off thing for Mark Ryan of the Marked Men or not. Turns out that there's a lot more where that came from because Ryan in his Mind Spiders persona has just let loose a full album. It's got the swagger of T-Rex , the rabble-rousing of Jay Retard and a certain sleek, moody psychedlia reminiscent of Love [...]

Marked Men co-leader Mark Ryan has elected to take advantage of that band's hiatus to get a little something on the side. That little something will henceforth be known as Mind Spiders , and their debut disc of blink-and-you'll-miss-it lo-fi pop rave ups will be born unto this earth in January courtesy of Dirtnap , the noisy little label that recently brought us White Wires . A blur of frenetic guitars and metronomic drums, lead single No Romance wastes little time getting down to business, and certainly doesn't wear out [...]
