This article was written by Cynthia Nunez-Smith, a contributing editor from Portland, OR. The Dirty Projectors released a new album last week called "Swing Lo Magellan." You'll mainly hear the voice of lead singer David Longstreth all about the record. The truth is, his voice is not my cup of tea. I am more of a fan of their arrangements, specifically featuring the harmonious vocals of Haley Deckle and Amber Coffman . Sure, Longstreth has an artistic vision, but I can't help but think that the record doesn't feature enough of my [...]

Since 2002, the Dirty Projectors have been Dave Longstreth's vehicle to deliver his unique arrangements and songwriting. For the project’s first five years, a rotating cast of players - including members of Wolf Colonel, Dear Nora, and Yume Bitsu - was used to help create Longstreth’s vision. With the development of his Rise Against project in 2007, one where Longstreth attempted to recreate Black Flag’s Damaged from memory, Longstreth and the Dirty Projectors began to work with more semi-permanent members, one of whom is Amber Coffman. A guitarist and vocalist, Coffman was on [...]

Irregardless of all the elation innately located within each and every opus emitted from the erudite David Longstreth et al. – however conscientiously subversive – it is one subtly tarnished by a patina of rather depressive reality. For his Dirty Projectors , despite being just about the finest baroque pop alt.orchestra to contemporarily be entangled in our ethernet cables and whatnot, are markedly a fundamental of noughties counterculture when they really – albeit in some fictitious and ATP-curated synchronous universe – should surely be revered as the primary authors of mainstream culture; venerated as veritably impeccable composers of Handelian [...]

Dave Longstreth is the leader of a cult/harem called the Dirty Projectors . Many claim that it is a 'buzzband', but insiders know that the altbaguettes in the band are basically brainwashed and enslaved, forced to 'ooh' and 'aahhh' in the background while he sings his little heart out. Without the altbaguettes, many ppl wouldn't even be interested in the Dirty Projectors . Most of their shows are filled with bros wanting to 'check out' that premium alt poontang on stage making mad O-faces. Anyways, between album cycles, Angel Deradoorian left the [...]

This song has been bouncing around on the interwebs for the past few days. It’s also been growing on me with each listen. Major Lazer aka Diplo and Switch bring in Amber Coffman of The Dirty Projectors to sing on this bouncy pop jam. via

This past Monday Major Lazer (Diplo + Switch) released their dreamy summer track "Get Free" featuring Dirty Projector's lead singer and venturing solo artist Amber Coffman. "Get Free" cruises along with it's arm out the window at an easy 88bpm, wind in it's face, with Amber's powerful and eerie vocals howling, pushing a solid summer groove. The Projects' own San Francisco based techno producer Nolan Gray's remix of "Get Free" takes a fantastic song deeper into the club by stepping on the gas and bringing the bpm up to a danceable 108. Boasting a beefy bassline with powerful melodic synths, [...]

It all starts with a tribal yell. Then it opens to a scaling, almost classical, electro strum. Soon after, comes the unmistakable voice of Amber Coffman (of the Dirty Projectors ). The hook is infectious and will be bouncing around your frontal lobe all day. It has a sort of Tune-Yards vibe to it. As far as most Major Lazer track go Get Free is a little more chilled. Definitely not a bad thing. [...]

Diplo has been doing some serious damage in 2012. it has been a while since I've heard some good music from Major Lazer, but Get Free qualifies. Amber Coffman of the Dirty Projectors lends her vocals to the track which has a smooth, yet slightly melancholy feel to it. Major Lazer - Get Free (ft. Amber Coffman)

Is there any other way to return from a planned absence than with a controversial defamation of one of indie’s most admired bands? No. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not about to criticise the critically unassailable Dirty Projectors simply for the sake of it; they’ve always been a very impressive band owing mostly to Amber Coffman’s ethereal vocals, but I’ve never been able to get past a feeling of emotional disconnection beyond that. In other words, they’ve always seemed brilliant in a far too ordered and sterile way; always something to admire as a thing of beauty but never [...]
He might not be dapper, but this cartoon can dagger. Major Lazer, the souped-up, one-armed, 802s-style animated soldier alter ego of Diplo and Switch, switches gears from his usual cage-dancing jump-offs to a slower, more heartfelt anthem with "Get Free," featuring vocals from Dirty Projectors' Amber Coffman. The collaboration highlights what both sides do best; the DJs' irresistible hooks coupled with Coffman's detached wailing creates a post-apocalyptic odyssey of a track, a vibe their video plays off as it follows Lazer from piles of dinosaur bones to open space, where he's destined to shoot lasers into the nothingness alone. It's [...]
Major Lazer is back and teamed up with Amber Coffman of Dirty Projectors to deliver some beautiful soundscapes and heavy lyrics that immediately give me flashbacks to Coachella 2010. Major Lazer and Dirty Projectors where highlights for me that magical/inspirational weekend, especially Dirty Projectors who helped my mind grow exponentially in all directions. Keep an eye out for officially release dates for Major Lazer album and tour and go here for Dirty Projects summer tour schedule. Big ups to our long lost Dank Radio comrade D$ for putting me up on this one, its definitely [...]

It's hard avoiding the strain of sadness and hopelessness lingering at the core of Major Lazer 's "Get Free", the song's melancholy reggae lope bringing vivid illustrative support to the somber, child-like melodies nestled in Dirty Projectors' Amber Coffman 's desperate plea for liberation from The Man. "Never got love from a government man," she woefully chirps in a beautifully poetic, yet heart-crushingly dejected lament that explores her desires for "relief", "sympathy", or hell, simply "a friend" to provide her some break from her current politics-fueled gloom. That being said though, is [...]
