Back to the Chopping Table. Major Lazer, Free the Universe.

So Major Lazer this week release Free the Universe for widespread consumption, and today thus becomes a monumental day; a special event, and one which would surely be honoured with a polychromic carnival of Notting Hill depravity were it only that bit more engrossing, even from the off. For it has been postponed, put off and pushed from pillar to post (read: label to label) since it was first slated for liberation earlier on in the year. Of course it somewhat inevitably marks a change in the trajectory first traced by Diplo in the [...]

Freed Up, Major Lazer.

You know when you hit saturation point with that one song? You've heard it so many fucking times over – you know its every lyric and every intricate inflexion thereof; you can reproduce its slick lick round the back of your brain; know, and so too fear the exact second it'll end. That is, or rather was where I was at with Get Free – I foolishly believed I could immaculately reproduce Amber Coffman's elastane vocal; redo her squiggly guitar part, and as such I needed something; anything to rejuvenate the adoration. And one might set about questioning how it [...]

Growing Social, Dirty Projectors.

While never quite my favourite from Dirty Projectors' Swing Lo Magellan – which conversely just so happened to feature right up there among our favourite  LPs of 2012  – The Socialites proved an intriguing hypothesis on reticence from David Longstreth et al., not least as they at least superficially seem a rather asocial ensemble themselves. Here, Hot Chip kingpin  Joe Goddard gives it a reinvigorating spin, and perhaps inevitably readies it for those more explicitly sociable sorts of scenario – grubby dance floors, grimy house parties and the like. Though as [...]

Rekindled, Dirty Projectors.

Any day that goes by without even so much as a transient burst of David Longstreth's Dirty Projectors is one which somehow leaves me feeling strangely unfulfilled. And truth be known, I've thus far this year rather neglected Swing Lo Magellan   so it's something of a saving grace that they released this one over the weekend. There's A Fire originally featured as the flipside to a limited white label release of Offspring Are Blank pressed especially to coincide with a show at New York's Carnegie Hall last month, and it's one to really rekindle [...]

Climaxing, Dirty Projectors.

While January has effectively lived up to its London billing as a month as drab musically as it is meteorologically, they're having a topsy-turvy time of it down under if recent triple j   Like A Version sessions are anything to go by. First there was dear ol' Sharon  doing Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' People Ain't No Good , and now there's this: David Longstreth's Dirty Projectors reinterpreting Usher's heady, chart-glooping Climax. Still swinging high off 'Magellan by the sounds of it, he's joined on the track by the band's [...]

Oh, Why Do Everyone Have to Grow Old? Mø.

Jarri reckons this latest electropop-hemmed hunk from great Danish songstress  Mø sounds rather redolent of Purity Ring though if so, it's indubitably more of a Fineshrine than it is Ungirthed; one to enwrap in your dismembered "little ribs" for prized safekeeping. With a thin patina of snow currently lacing the streets, Glass plays off that same belatedly festive feel as did fellow Scandi heartthrob Frida Sundemo's latest, Snow , though that's where the similarities end as Karen Ørsted melts the glistering cascades of scale to its beginning into a more pulsating, and indeed scintillating electroclash-Zero backdrop [...]

Dirty Projectors Carnegie Hall Show: Glances of History, Gleams of Brilliance

Oresti Tsonopoulos The lights darken, a door off to the left cracks open, out steps David Longstreth solo. He calmly walks to the front of the stage of Carnegie Hall and begins a rendition of "Swing Lo Magellan" alone with his guitar. As the nucleus for the living organism of a band called the Dirty Projectors , Longstreth starting the show alone onstage with the title track of their latest record was the perfect, understated move. Playing with melody and phrasing like a cat pawing yarn, his yearning voice seemed to both [...]

Dirty Projectors - "Offspring Are Blank" (Official Music Video)

Live: Strange Paradise. Beach House, Roundhouse.

Live: Strange Paradise. Beach House, Roundhouse. Were Baltimore's dreamiest of its innumerable dream popsters Beach House a colour, theirs would indubitably be a wash of alluring blue. To paraphrase Bloom : track 6, or Troublemaker, they surged out of the blue and into the redder hearts of many; no, most with previous LP Teen Dream and musically, in Bloom , they've maintained that oneiric sound that remains clearer than an azure sky . Clear, lucid, and above all irrefutably crystalline. Simplicity at play, almost. Maybe a baby blue. Live though, they can truly rasp if and when they [...]

Dirty Projectors- “While You’re Here” (LOVED)

Dirty Projectors - While You're Here
A wonderfully moving ballad from Dirty Projectors, which floats upon a bed of fantastic string sections. I've received quite a few comments saying I was a little unforgiving when it comes to the band's last album ; however, I don't see myself coming around on the LP anytime soon. Such is life. What's I'm happy about is this particular track streaming via the YouTube embed above is appealing to me much more. It showcases a certain sonic clarity and strange beauty that stuns me in a way words cannot explain. While the track does suffer from the [...]

Live: Swinging High off Magellan. Dirty Projectors, Roundhouse.

Live: Swinging High off Magellan. Dirty Projectors, Roundhouse. It is with bated breath tonight swiftly and efficiently transformed in protracted gasp that we await Dirty Projectors . They've taken their sweet, sweet time in reaching our fair isles, and with their simplest and with that most successful record in tow ( Swing Lo Magellan peaked at an astoundingly respectful #22 in the US Billboard 200), they were never to take the Roundhouse stage with anything other than aplomb. They that frequented any American date of this particular tour were afforded the opportunity to be rewarded with a limited 7" were they amongst the first few to [...]

David Longstreth's Hi Custodian

David Longstreth's Hi Custodian Most devoted fans will tell you to read the book first. However, with Dirty Projectors captain David Longstreth’s short film  Hi Custodian , I’d advise you to first surrender yourself to this surreal, yet precise eccentricity that is his visual narrative before you listen to the album for which it was created, Swing Lo Magellan . I am not, as a hard-core-book-devotee-level admirer of DP’s sixth album myself, arguing that the film is better than the record. Like the rest of its audience, I praised Magellan’ s ability to remain [...]
