2012 was a fantastic year for new music from both up-and-coming bands and veterans of the music scene. I listened to as much as I could get my hands on [...]
About 200 of you guys participated in our annual readers poll, and the results were tight. You had the chance to vote for 5 albums, and I gave each album a point value, decreasing with each vote. So first place got 5 points, second place got 4, etc... The race was very close between Frank Ocean & Tame Impala, but in the end, Frank Ocean took home the Orange gold. All in all, the taste of you faithful bunch alligns quite well with mine, minus Mumford & Sons. In total, 252!! albums were voted for, which is insane. [...]

Thanks To Camilo for this great artwork. Looking back at 2012, there were plenty of albums that I loved. Was it the best year of music in recent memory? Maybe not, but it was a damn good year in its own right. There is a lot that we may look back on and remember well into the rest of the decade. This year I listed my Top 40 albums, as well as a few honorable mentions that were as close to making my list as they come. I didn't get to listen [...]

Dirty Projectors - Swing [...]
Here I am, left to go last once again with my favorite songs of the year. I feel as though I listened to more in 2012 than in any other year, and my musical experience was all the better for it. More music means more candidates, which admittedly makes lists like this one tougher. But [...]

With 2012 drawing to a close, the DJs of WQHS give to you their top ten albums of the year. Check out the entire list after the jump. 10. Cat Power - Sun Four years after Jukebox and six years since her last original material on The Greatest, Chan Marshall returns with Cat Power in her long awaited ninth full-length album Sun . In what seems to be her most costly work yet, Marshall [...]
As I looked over my playlists from the year 2012, I have tried to only add the songs that either charge me up or songs that seem to find a way to my heart and soul. Here are my favorites for 2012. I couldn’t possibly rank them, so they are simply listed in the order that they were released. Editor's Note: The majority of the songs are in a playlist at the bottom of the post page. Cloud Nothings - "Stay Useless" This song reminds me of that awkward wonky [...]

ILLUSTRATION BY LYDIA CONKLIN 2012 was a spectacular year in music - one with so many records we truly loved that narrowing down the list was difficult. Ordering it, however, was almost impossible. This was a year of shifting genres and experimentation. This was a year that introduced us to some bands that will remain on rotation for years to come and albums that are already on their way to becoming modern classics. Along with the return of many favorites, we were given the debuts from Django Django , Alt J , Frank Ocean , [...]

Alas, our 2012 Annual Report has come to an end. It ain't over until several of you argue about your favorite albums, so that's where today fits into the picture. Below you'll see 50 of our favorite albums, all ranked and argued for your pleasure. Some you might have heard, others maybe not [...]
Yesterday, we brought you our first 50 picks of the year's best songs . And today, we're wrapping up perhaps the most difficult list we have had to create. There are have been so many great singles, non-album tracks, loosies, leftovers, etc... in the past 12 months. But still, we dug through our posts and iTunes libraries to compile what we believe are the best tracks to drop this year. You will find plenty of Potholes favorites—from Kendrick Lamar to TNGHT to BADBADNOTGOOD —populating our choices along with a few artists that might surprise you. [...]

This past year, I finally put my eyes to the test, armed myself with a semi-expensive camera, and hit the photo pits. Now, I had previously wiggled my way up to the front of the crowds with a point-and-shoot in our early days, but I'd never really attempted to put myself in the shoes of a professional photographer. Within five minutes, I realized how stressful and yet how thrilling the position can be. There's a sense of community that photographers have that writers never really will. While some express lens-envy, and yeah it's really ridiculous and uber-showy, most [...]

photo by Morgen Schuler While traveling in Texas as part of her tour behind this year's The Idler Wheel... , Fiona Apple has been arrested for hash possession. (Let the flood of "Free Fiona" and "Criminal" jokes commence.) Apple is currently being held in a Hudspeth County jail, but is still scheduled to play The Moody Theatre tonight as part of Austin City Limits. Check out Fiona's mugshot over at Pitchfork . Canadian twins Tegan and Sara have been steadily working on [...]
It being Friday, and just shy of half-way through the ninth month of the year, this morning I ( @andykahn ) decided on a whim to tweet out my Top 9 Albums of 2012 (so far). Along with the nine I chose, I also added a handful of, “Honorable Mentions,” that didn’t quite make the cut. With a quarter of the year left, 2012 has thus far proven to be another impressive year of album releases. #9 album of 2012 (so far) @ mapsnatlases "Beware [...]

Inside The Cap Forty years ago, in its heyday, the Capitol Theater here was known as a rock stage with great acoustics, a crumbling space where the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Santana and Pink Floyd played memorable concerts. So when Peter Shapiro, a founder of the Brooklyn Bowl, took over the theater last year and announced plans to reopen it as a concert hall next month, he had a heavy reputation to live up to. Now Mr. Shapiro has unveiled an eclectic lineup for the next four months [...]
