We know, we know. You're sick of seeing wrap-ups of 2009, seeing as how we're already diving headfirst into 2010, but we should stop you right there. Because the Hype Machine isn't just a bunch of editors talking about the...

(Separate Columbus list further down. Though, if the lists were combined, some of the local releases would unseat a few here...) 1. Larry Jon Wilson - Larry Jon Wilson I won’t lie. Talking to Larry Jon and producer Jerry DeCicca (Black Swans) about this album, learning about its origins, and visiting Wilson’s back catalog gave me a heightened appreciation for this masterpiece. So context helps, but even if you know nothing about the back story, this is a stark, beautiful album from start to finish [...]
As you might be able to tell by our lack of posting, we were hard at work over the holidays putting together our end of the year lists. Today is the first of three lists - our Best Albums of 2009 list. So in no particular order, we present them to you: The Antlers - Hospice This intensely beautiful, heart-wrenching album is full of more tragedy than we would hope any one person would
100. Green Day American Idiot Punk bands don't normally look to make concept albums, but then defining Green Day as a punk band is kind of an iffy take on things. The band has managed to go from a group of kids that were mad at their parents, to a group of adults that guide misguided teens through their adolescence. American Idiot was the transition point and will probably stand as the band's magnum opus throughout the rest of their career. Green Day - "Jesus of Suburbia" [...]
The songs that rocked my ears over the course of the past year, in alphabetical order. I rank none of these any higher than any others. That's mainly because depending on the day, mood, weather, a... Continue reading "Spacek's Favorite Songs of 2009" >

IT'S HERE! My top ten songs of the year and a wonderful chance for you all to tell me what I excluded. HA. Keep in mind, lists are never objective. They tend to very personal and eventually take on a life of their own. I've been sweating over these choices ever since June and now here they are: Super Secret Surprise #11! Because it's (quite literally) one louder. Yes this is a Top Ten list but who can resist the urge to toss in a This is Spinal Tap joke when there is a chance? Not [...]

In recent years the crowd that is claiming "the album is dead" has grown louder and louder. We couldn't disagree more. As more and more people turn to iTunes and the Hype Machine to download the latest and greatest singles, we have stuck to the traditional album listening and found that there are still some truly great records being made these days. For most of this year we have been inundated by bands breaking into the world, mainstream artists trying to recapture their former glory, and indie rock "superstars" growing into their own, it has been exciting and fun and [...]

Dirty Projectors picks up where Talking Heads left off two decades ago in integrating the muscularity of rock with the liquidness of funk. It’s as if key Projector Dave Longstreth has taken to heart George Clinton’s advice, “Free your mind and your ass will follow”. The inquisitive spirit that pervades Bitte Orca is encapsulated in “Stillness is the Move”, where songcraft, arrangement, and production work together seamlessly. Electronic bass samples and acoustic drums join forces with double-tracked guitar, setting the scene for duelling diva vocals. Painting on the canvas of rock music, “Stillness is the Move” drips [...]

Artwork by the talented and generous Adam Sarpalius . The final list is here. We have been working on this Absolute (sarcasm) Best Songs of 2009 list all year, updating it at the end of every quarter. I was only going to have PMA's Top 50 of the year listen, but I couldn't narrow it down beyond the top 75. This list will represent and acknowledge some of the artists I felt had to be left out of our Best Albums of 2009 list. As always, I upheld only one rule [...]

At the beginning of the year I unleashed an article unlike anything I had ever written for this site before. Titled, " The 9's Have It: Historical Reasoning Why 2009 Will Be A Great Year for Music ", I detailed the history of the last year of the decade and its overall affect on the pop culture we would experience well into the next decade. Well 2009 hasn't really disappointed at all, at least when it comes to the music. Sure, we don't know exactly where we'll be 10-years from now but if you look at [...]
