It's quite unmistakably en vogue to go reworking contemporary R'n'B tracks at the minute and whether that be David Longstreth's Dirty Projectors giving Usher's heady Climax a mildly radical once-over or AlunaGeorge redoing Frank Ocean's Thinkin Bout You, the results can prove somewhat inconclusive. So when 4AD's Montréal duo Purity Ring took to Soulja Boy's Grammy in the wake of the awards of the same name, the jury was bound to take its sweet time about it. Of course elements of hip hop, post-R'n'B , and so forth all factored into the making of Megan James and [...]
Jarri reckons this latest electropop-hemmed hunk from great Danish songstress Mø sounds rather redolent of Purity Ring though if so, it's indubitably more of a Fineshrine than it is Ungirthed; one to enwrap in your dismembered "little ribs" for prized safekeeping. With a thin patina of snow currently lacing the streets, Glass plays off that same belatedly festive feel as did fellow Scandi heartthrob Frida Sundemo's latest, Snow , though that's where the similarities end as Karen Ørsted melts the glistering cascades of scale to its beginning into a more pulsating, and indeed scintillating electroclash-Zero backdrop [...]
About 200 of you guys participated in our annual readers poll, and the results were tight. You had the chance to vote for 5 albums, and I gave each album a point value, decreasing with each vote. So first place got 5 points, second place got 4, etc... The race was very close between Frank Ocean & Tame Impala, but in the end, Frank Ocean took home the Orange gold. All in all, the taste of you faithful bunch alligns quite well with mine, minus Mumford & Sons. In total, 252!! albums were voted for, which is insane. [...]

Thanks To Camilo for this great artwork. Looking back at 2012, there were plenty of albums that I loved. Was it the best year of music in recent memory? Maybe not, but it was a damn good year in its own right. There is a lot that we may look back on and remember well into the rest of the decade. This year I listed my Top 40 albums, as well as a few honorable mentions that were as close to making my list as they come. I didn't get to listen [...]

With 2012 drawing to a close, the DJs of WQHS give to you their top ten albums of the year. Check out the entire list after the jump. 10. In what seems to be her most costly work yet, Marshall [...]

ILLUSTRATION BY LYDIA CONKLIN 2012 was a spectacular year in music - one with so many records we truly loved that narrowing down the list was difficult. Ordering it, however, was almost impossible. This was a year of shifting genres and experimentation. This was a year that introduced us to some bands that will remain on rotation for years to come and albums that are already on their way to becoming modern classics. Along with the return of many favorites, we were given the debuts from Django Django , Alt J , Frank Ocean , [...]

(photo by cubagallery ) These are 50 tracks that delighted, inspired and fascinated us in 2012 and that we think are worthy of remembering long after the year is over. We present them here in highly unscientific ordered list form, with Matt's songs marked with a "-MG" and my choices with a "-TJ" next to them. To better spread the love, we've stuck with the one song per artist rule. Click here to download all the tracks in a zip and subscribe to our Spotify Playlist to stream them all. Enjoy y'all! [...]

July is a distant memory and hard to believe that we're half way through the year, August approaches and it's sure to be as high paced as the past few weeks this month has seen. We've had one of the biggest debut projects in recent memory receive high praise, we got reacquainted with familiar acts, and an emphatic return from one of the best lyricist in the game. As usual, in case you missed out we've got it all here for you including a playlist at the bottom, so catch up on and reminisce on the month that was. [...]
I think sometimes we're in a rush. I think sometimes we focus too much on trying to be first or the novelty of something and we lose focus on quality in music or otherwise. I think we need to slow down and look around and enjoy what's before us. That's why this post features an old favorite, Sam Cooke's Bring It On Home To Me , instead of something new as I summarize where I fall on some of the currently hyped music. This post has it origins in part because I agree [...]

No summer storm could quash the fervor that accompanies Pitchfork Music Festival . While the crowd did at times seem abnormally small compared to recent years (especially on Friday), the anticipation running through those who dared to brave the thunderclaps on their bikes on day one, or those who braved crowded CTA busses on day two, or those who hitched a ride in from the suburbs on day three didn't dip a bit. Thanks to the chilly pulses of wind and rain, there were some new fashion trends to add onto your typical face-painted nuts in swimsuits [...]

Assuming that some of you weren't lucky enough to grab tickets to this year's Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago, here's some footage from yesterday. Friday's line-up included Purity Ring , A$AP Rocky , Lower Dens , Dirty Projectors , amongst many others. Give some of the performances a watch below. Friday's first day of Pitchfork Festival wasted no time getting into it, where many festival entrants walked in to the fully-wrought hypnotic swirl of Lower Dens, a set that eventually gave way to the raucous appearance of the ASAP Mob, all before dinner time. Once again, one of the country's most manageable, well-paced festivals hit the ground running. Check out some images from Friday taken by Carmelo Espanola up top and read Friday's recap below. My favorite sets at the first day of Pitchfork Music Festival Friday were by Dirty Projectors and Willis Earl Beal . I had a feeling that Dirty Projectors' new songs would sound really good live. I wasn't sure what to expect from Beal, who is sort of a soul, blues, gospel, indie kind of guy. He's not that easy to define - kind of like Tom Waits . But he's a captivating performer and his songs are powerful. I liked sets by Lower [...]
Pitchfork Music Festival gets going Friday afternoon with Lower Dens playing one of the first sets. It's a strong opener for what I think will be another good fest. (I've been to all of them.) Admittedly, it's not easy to catch the opening acts and stay all the way through the closers over three days, but I try my best to see the short early sets, which sometimes prove to be highlights. Friday is a good example. One of Chicago's most fascinating new artists, Willis Earl Beal, also plays an early set that day - one [...]

Brooklyn's a weird place. Case in point, prior to Purity Ring's sunny seven p.m. set at New York's Prospect Park last night, those who arrived early were treated to free blankets and ice cream - yeah, exactly. Still, that only bolstered what was essentially a mini festival of a bill: Purity Ring, Wye Oak , and Dirty Projectors . Sure, the three bands might not draw too many parallels musically, but you've got to love those rare times when the ticket price is actually over-justified . Also, what a fucking Tuesday night, right? Montreal's Purity Ring turned some [...]

This Sunday MFR faves Dirty Projectors will hit the First Avenue Mainroom in Minneapolis to celebrate the release of their new LP Swing Lo Magellan (out now). photos by Amanda Hatfield Dirty Projectors, Celebrate Brooklyn! 7/10/2012 It was a gorgeous evening in Prospect Park last night for one of the more anticipated Celebrate Brooklyn! concerts of the season: Dirty Projectors , Wye Oak and Purity Ring . Having just played the much more intimate Music Hall of Williamsburg the night before, David Longstreth and company peformed basically the same set at Prospect Park, just with the song order [...]
