Stereogum Monthly Mix: April 2013

After experimenting with three formats for the Monthly Mix - MP3 zip, Spotify playlist, Soundcloud set, etc. - in March we finally came upon a solution that pleased everyone: all of them. And so, for you, here is the month's music, whittled down to its very best, via each of the aforementioned mediums, limited only by its availability on said mediums. This means a 13-track zip, a 12-track Spotify playlist, and a whopping 54-track Soundcloud stream. And somehow, falling through all the cracks and not represented on any is one of the month's finest: The National's straight-to-Youtube " [...]

Dirty Projectors – “While You’re Here”

Dirty Projectors - While You're Here
Here's another cut from Dirty Projectors' forthcoming About To Die EP, a spare, swirling orchestra-accented cut called "While You're Here." Dave Longstreth takes the lead here and earlier today provided a dedication on Twitter. Hear it below. Read More...

The 5 Best Videos Of The Week

Dirty Projectors - "Hi Custodian"
We didn't get to see too many mind-boggling short-form videos this week, but we did get one long one in which one of our greatest, most ambitious indie bands takes its packed-to-bursting, unapologetically pretentious musical maximalism to the screen, staying bizarre and compelling throughout. That alone makes it a pretty good week. Check for our picks below. Read More...

Dirty Projectors’ David Longstreth On Wonderful Rainbows, Being Vulnerable, And The Cowardice In Modern Music

Tomorrow, Dirty Projectors release their outstanding, prematurely beloved new LP Swing Lo Magellan . Tonight, the band performs a release show at Music Hall Of Williamsburg, and streams it live to YouTube at 10PM EST. And right now, we're presenting the transcript of a conversation I had with principal Projector David Longstreth in Greenpoint a few weeks back. We talked about Swing Lo and its process and particulars of course, but it's most triumphant moments are when we deviate from the press-junket parlance and go in on chillwave, Pharoah Sanders, Instagram, the beauty [...]

Dirty Projectors – “Dance For You”

Dirty Projectors - Dance For You
"There is an answer, I haven't found it / But I will keep dancing 'til I do." Dirty Projectors are just under a month away from releasing Swing Lo Magellan , and the record's second advance track introduces a lot of its themes - both lyrically (creative expression in the face of spiritual uncertainty) and musically (orchestral composition, handclaps, intertwining guitar solos) - while managing to be unassuming and pretty. Dirty Projectors are up to a lot but make it feel breezy, turning in a proper song from an album that is shaping [...]

And Our Dirty Projectors Album Cover Caption Contest Winner Is…

The results are in on our caption contest for the photographic album cover to Dirty Projectors' forthcoming Swing Lo Magellan ! And as commenter eldave said: " Tough room ." Thank you for your hundreds of entries, and apologies that your hundreds of entries suffered a hailstorm of downvotes. (We forgot to put "play nice" in the rules, our bad.) One entry that didn't make the cut was that of Dave Longstreth (pictured above, right). This morning I interviewed him for a piece we'll publish here soon and asked for his submission. He pointed immediately to [...]

Dirty Projectors – “You Against The Larger World”

Dirty Projectors' feverishly anticipated new album Swing Lo Magellan is imminent, and we've already slavered over the first single " Gun Has No Trigger ." The album is 12 songs long, but the band recorded more than 40 demos. One of the tracks that didn't make the cut was "You Against The Larger World," which only exists in the form of a demo, with frontman Dave Longstreth playing it solo-acoustic. It still sounds pretty great, and it's part of a Record Store Day flexi-disc from the Smuggler's Way zine. Listen to it [...]

Dirty Projectors Swing Lo Magellan Details

On Friday, just as the weekend was getting set to jump off, Dirty Projectors left us with their surprisingly smooth new single " Gun Has No Trigger ." And today, the band announces all the details behind the album that'll accompany it. This one, the follow-up to 20092s great Bitte Orca , is called Swing Lo Magellan , and it's coming 7/10 in America and a day earlier in the rest of the world, via Domino . Leader Dave Longstreth, in a press release, calls it "an album of songs, an [...]

Dirty Projectors – “Gun Has No Trigger”

Well, the full-length followup to 20092s best album is imminent, as indicated by a fresh new Soundcloud upload by Domino Records. "Gun Has No Trigger" is the name of the first single from Dirty Projectors' new LP, and rather than take a moment to digest it we're going to point you to it ASAP so we can all consume together. Like a family. Hear it at dirtyprojectors.net or Soundcloud . Hails.

The 5 Most Memorable SXSW Sets Of The Past 5 Years

The "discovery" function of SXSW faded long ago, when the internet democratized access to information and YouTube brought every band's live show to everyone's laptops. And at SXSW, this annual cattle call of overbooked bands playing shitty sounding rooms to attention-addled industry types, it's tough to cut through the noise and make an impression. So, for your benefit, but also maybe a little bit for ours, too, here's a post to remind that classic sets do happen at SXSW, via five instant vintage SXSW shows we experienced over the past five years. Maybe this will revitalize your flagging faith in [...]

Our Band Could Be Your Life Tribute @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC 5/22/11

It's ten years since Michael Azerrad first published his defining DIY '80s scene portrait Our Band Could Be Your Life , which covered an independent music culture that changed irrevocably a decade before that with the release of Nevermind . Round anniversaries make apt opportunities for retrospectives, and in the case of Our Band , this year has been a sort of meta-reflection: between a panel at SXSW, and last night's show at Bowery Ballroom, 2011 has seen a few organized moments of the present "indie" culture celebrating and reflecting on how the blueprint Michael [...]

Interview with Dave Longstreth, Dirty Projectors

“Holy shit!” exclaimed Dirty Projectors frontman Dave Longstreth, after hearing a list of Oxegen 2010’s headliners: Arcade Fire, Muse, Black Eyed Peas, Eminem, John Mayer, Fatboy Slim. “Those are like, all of my favorite bands!” Amidst a line-up saturated in mainstream pop and corporate indie rock bands, the Brooklyn-based Dirty Projectors are a standout experimental pop gem at this year’s Oxegen. Their seventh studio album, Bitte Orca , is a complex take on pop sounds, most notably in its intricate use of vocal harmonies and melodies. Named of the of [...]

Solid Gold - the Golden Filter
Amidst a line-up with many bigger-name acts, this year’s Oxegen fest features a number of noteworthy blog-hyped up-and-comers as well. Here are our picks for the best buzzy bands from North America. (Pitchfork would approve, too.) Memoryhouse (Red Bull Academy Stage, Friday) By late afternoon on Friday, those smart enough to check out the Red Bull Academy stage for Memoryhouse’s spaced-out synth pop will be greatful for their breezy, calm soundscapes. The Canadian duo have received lots of blog-praise this year despite only having [...]
