James Mercer and The Shins to release Port Of Morrow on March 20, their first album in six years. Now that we've had our first real viable candidate for arbitrary year-end lists, it's time to look at some other releases on the near horizon that hold that kind of potential. Since the world is supposed to end in May or something, we won't look beyond* that. Joining the excellent Cloud Nothings' Attack On Memory are anticipated releases from The Shins, Dirty Projectors, Sleigh Bells, Sharon [...]

Looking over the list of albums slated for release in the new few months, it's hard not to get overly giddy - 2012 is going to be a great year for music. Several bands that made names for themselves with wildly inventive and successful debuts are putting forth their sophomore efforts this year. The all-important follow-up album can be tricky, though, especially when an artist has made such a unique statement with their debut - I'm definitely eager to hear how these musicians have adapted their sound. Cloud Nothings' (@cloudnothings) [...]
Dirty Projectors capo Dave Longstreth's been on the lam since his band's triumphant Bitte Orca (and its Björk-bolstered sibling Mount Wittenberg Orca ), spending time in more rustic locales quite literally shedding on a new record. We don't know exactly when the new record will be done this year, or what it will be called, though for a band this intentional, it's fair to assume that a DJ set at a museum on the Upper West Side is a signal that their return to the country's urban centers is [...]
Beeld: Nat Baldwin - Weights Paard van de dag?
One Step Beyond at AMNH Hey folks, as a I mentioned a little while ago, the One Step Beyond music series is returning to AMNH on Friday, January 20 with Dirty Projectors (DJ Set), Skinny Freidman , and Import/Export . As I also mentioned, there was a chance that I would be giving away tickets to the show and the good news is that that giveaway is now officially happening. I've got two pairs of tickets to give away to Friday night's [...]
Last year, Dirty Projectors member Nat Baldwin released his solo album People Changes . Today, he gives us a truly great music video for the album track "Weights." If I describe much of director Willy Berliner 's video, I'll give too much away. So I'll just offer this quick plot synopsis: A horse reflects on the artifacts of another time. It's like the most emotive episode of Mr. Ed ever, and it's perfectly ridiculous. Watch it below. Read More...
Bitte Orca is an album rich with detail and intricacy. It has a thick, bright, but in no way overdone sound. David Longstreth's eccentric lead vocals, the girls' (Amber Coffman, Angel Deradoorian, and Haley Dekle) tricky, but perfectly executed backround vocals, Longstreth's equally exceptional guitar, and countless other elements are mixed to create this classic Dirty Projectors LP. Longstreth veers into progressive rock territory with his odd time signatures and rhythm switches. It's as though he's singing the lyrics as he's thinking of them. The album is brilliant in the way it sounds spontaneous and yet so perfectly planned at [...]

This morning we mentioned some upcoming releases we're excited about, but not every band has their plans set in stone. Some are more vague, intentional or not, about their current projects, leaving us to speculate about whether they'll make good on a promise for a record in 2012, or whether they'll just surprise us with a stellar album. Here are some bands we're (*fingers crossed*) expecting/hoping for albums from this year. Sometime in 2012 [...]

When you compile a list like this, you start to tremble at how much you're really going to absorb in the ensuing months. This doesn't even cover the misses and surprises. If you're a casual listener, you might get through an album a day. Okay, maybe two. If you're a fanatic, you're spinning discographies left and right. Still, after 365 days, either person is buzzing. One's just a little louder with the phonetics. As I wrote back in December, in a year, you'll have your next roundup of favorite albums. You'll have a new favorite song. You might [...]

One Step Beyond at AMNH (02/04/11) Photo : themusic.fm Hey folks, it's January, and that can only mean one thing, the One Step Beyond series at American Natural History Museum is about to kick into high gear again. This Friday ( Jan 20 ), the genre defying musical collective known as The Dirty Projectors will be DJing the first OSB party of the year along with Import/Export and Skinny Friedman . You can purchase tickets here , but [...]
![[Review/Listen] – Real Estate – "Days"](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3944381_lg.jpg)
Tweet The cloudy, languid pop of Real Estate has been a favorite of the most well-versed hipsters for a few years now, and the band is finally emerging from the underground market straight into the ears of the mainstream crowd with their sophomore album "Days" . At their best, Real Estate sound like a more melodic, stretched out Nada Surf. Their use of repetition creates a feeling of relaxation within the separate tracks that also somehow encompasses the album as a [...]

While there are a lot of great bands hailing from across the pond, Liverpool's five-piece Outfit is soaring high with the latest release of their single debut 7" Two Islands via Double Denim Records . "Two Islands" is a slow-building track that meditates on seclusion while juxtaposing that lonesome feeling with [...]

The first thing you're going to notice about this collaberation is the sheer sparseness of the arrangements. All Björk and Dirty Projectors have given themselves to work with are acoustic guitar, some very understated bass, so-subtle-you'd-almost-miss-it synths and vocal harmonies, though the resulting sound is a very complex, multi-layered one. Photo by Weird Magic dot biz If there's one thing I love, it's girls with bangs. If there's another thing I love, it is the altbaguettes from Dirty Projectors . If there's one more thing that I love, it's alt girls with premium curly hair. Angel Deradoorian has got it all. Here she is showing off her PERFECTLY EXECUTED CURLY BANGS, but also that she is able to leave the walls of the controversial Dirty Projector Compound . I am happy for her freedom, and [...]

Who's hands are those above - Chris Martin? DJ Cam? M. Ward? Nope, it's Marc Byrd from the duo of Hammock leading our indie list for the week, while larger names, such as Coldplay, Tom Waits and several others make for a lively treat. Byrd and Andrew Thompson formed in 2004 as Hammock , which sends a shimmering shoegaze effort in mostly everything we have heard from them. Their latest album Asleep in the Downlights could go any direction as the duo has mastered their expressive music to match their constantly-in-motion lives. Of [...]

What up everybody everybody? Hope you had a nice weekend when you were at Disneyland, I know I did. There is some good stuff to listen to this week, I have been hearing the new Deer Tick all morning long and I like it, and I am sure you will too. Feel free to take a look around and let me know if you want to try something on. 3Ds: Hellzapoppin (reissue) [vinyl] A.A. Bondy: Believers [vinyl] Ane Brun: Changing of the Seasons [...]
