What joy we festival lovers received today! Aye, the line-ups for two of the best festivals of the summer, Sasquatch and Primavera Sound, were released, and are they ever a gift from the festival deities on high. Both are absolutely stuffed with bands that we love and have been geeking out over for months if not years. Sasquatch, one of our favorite line-ups from last year as well, boasts artists that will sound breathtaking in the Gorge. The dreams you have about seeing Bon Iver under the stars and surrounded by landscapes as picturesque [...]
Filed under: News , Monthly Mixtape Dusdin Condren, Elise Rasmussen, Collier Schorr January 2012 was weird. Newt Gingrich reinflated his balloon-man arms with super PAC cash, Beyonce and Jay-Z birthed the world's smallest overlord and Kim Dotcom became a Internet legend. With ever-growing evidence that the end of the world is nigh, we at Spinner have realized that life is too short to sweat the small stuff. So forget the daily hullabaloo and check [...]

"This started out as our attempt to do a hip hop track. As you can see we failed miserably", so Violinist Warren Ellis über das neue Stück der Dirty Three.
David Ignatius Walsh was the hometown hero, a lion of the pre World War II Boston Irish community. He had served as Governor of Massachusetts followed by five terms in the U.S. Senate, the first Irish Catholic to hold the post. He was a confirmed bachelor, somewhat of a dandy with a penchant for flashy [...]
Video: Vimeo - YouTube Photos: Flickr Audio: zip download: right-click, save as This session was recorded in Glasgow before Josh's performance at Oran Mor on 22nd November last year. The first attempt to record a session with him was at Stereo, but recording in a venue really didn't work out, so this time we decided to take up the kind offer of Phil from PAWS to record it in his bedroom instead. Again [...]
The individual members of Australia's instrumental rock titan Dirty Three have kept busy in the last seven years, playing on critically lauded records by Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, Bill Callahan and more. Next month, we get to here what the results of their hiatus are when Toward The Low Sun drops on February 28 (Drag City). [...]
Infamously cantankerous studio rat/national treasure Steve Albini doesn't like to be called a record producer. He prefers the term "recording engineer." That's a dry, clinical term for what Albini actually does, but it makes sense that he'd prefer to be seen that way. Over the past few decades, Albini has overseen the creation of countless numbers of recorded artifacts. And even though he's been an outspoken opponent of the major-label system (and of other underground-rock heroes), he's known to work with just about anyone who requests his services, whether it's a major-label juggernaut like '90s radio-grunge rulers Bush or the [...]
As I mentioned earlier in the month, the Dirty Three have a new LP dropping in February. My copy has been on repeat, but revisiting the Melbourne trio's last output - 20052s Cinder - I was reminded how I used to imagine what the album's cornerstone track, "Great Waves," would sound like with Will Oldham [...]
The Dirty Three has a new album coming out, their first new album since 2005's Cinder, a long break for the Melbourne trio who play violin, guitar, and drums, no singing, just brilliant music, the first and maybe only rock band to feature violin so prominently, or so impressively. The new album is titled Toward the Low Sun and is coming out in February followed by a tour of Australia and New Zealand in March and some festivals in the UK and Europe over the summer. No word yet on an American leg. But here's [...]
Monday, January 23, 2012 Today's Quick Mention: There's not many shows going on tonight, so I recommend staying inside. Or, if you want, you could get out and see Haywire. I thought it was a pretty solid flick. Why is Monday here already? Oh well. Here's some music. Enjoy. : Shearwater - You As You Were : When I mentioned the track Breaking The Yearlings I said I liked [...]

Here is this week's music singles chart. The week ending January 22 - 28. There is no change with the #1 song which happens to be Montreal's Grimes. While we have to wait until February 21st for Visions. Just have fun with her song Genesis, a fun dreamy pop dance tune. There are four new debuts, one being Yamantaka // Sonic Titans who will be playing in Ottawa on February 3rd . Check it out! [...]
Here it is, the first mix of The Last Year. So far we've had a flood of good music these first few weeks of 2012, which in fairness is probably just the result of bands wisely holding back on releasing things into the holiday void that is the winternet, but let's be optimistic about it and say this is going to be one of the greatest years for music in your lifetime. Why not! All of that said, this mix is only 10 songs, but they are ten of the very best songs we posted this month, with the added [...]

Despite remaining active over the past seven years by playing in other various acts like Nick Cave, Grinderman, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, PJ Harvey, Nina Nastasia, White Magic, Bill Callahan, and Cat Power and recording solo albums, the Dirty Three, aka Mick Turner, Jim White, and Warren Ellis, haven't recorded a new album since 2005's Cinder . On February 28th, Drag City will release the trio's return album Toward the Low Sun featuring all the folky instrumentals that you love the band for. Download the first single "Rising Below" below. Irrespective of the continued entanglement of the various ones of the Dirty Three with a contemporary artistic conscience (paths have previously led to painting, Peej and Ally Pally ), their collective presence has been gravely missed. Six years, three months, and a further six days have passed since the release of Cinder, a nimble-fingered beast of gentle disposition, one capable of untangling the most obstinate of emotional knots and although perhaps not a direct consequence of their absence, times since they've been a-troublin'. However next month, quite fortuitously for anyone and everyone feeling fragile around [...]

[RSS Readers: See post to listen to audio] Trust me on this one, this Tanlines track is worth your time. They started where they left off with a hooky melodic caribbean pop touch, once the track fills out you can't deny its better than all that Vampire Weekend bullshit. I'm on a Keep Shelly In Athens roll and that means hunting down even guest appearances. The new Solar Bears single has KSIA front and center on a 70s drenched swirling am-gold jam that could be one of the best [...]
