Austin City Limits has always been the odd festival out of the Big Four. Although one of North America's biggest and best music festivals, its presence within the Music Capitol of the World has led to instant sell outs long before it was cool to instantly sell out. Festival organizers have consistently catered their lineups more to the Austin demographics, putting less emphasis on big name reunions or unique gets. Alt-rock, folk, and twang frequently top the bill, and this year is no exception with the presence of Wilco, The National, Kings of Leon, and Vampire Weekend. [...]

Peel back the surface and look past the picturesque valley backdrop. Forget about the gorgeous, sun-kissed young folk wearing next to nothing (or, on occasion, nothing). Go ahead and ignore the ridiculous hippie art splattering the landscape. Once you get past everything that suggests Coachella is a legit wonderful place, reality sets in. You're in hell. Everything pretty or fun is undercut by a physical reminder that you're in the desert, and the desert is no place for human life. Read More...

So, where were these Middle of the Map pictures and videos last week? Thanks to some fine Internet mischief-makers, I couldn't access the site for the better part of two days. Thanks, guys. That was dandy. I understand some of you folks out there have a problem with our hosts at GoDaddy, but some of us don't have the time, energy, and money to swap service providers and DNS hosts every time somebody does something stupid. Anyhow, video above from Oils and below from y(our) fri(end) , both Lawrence artists performing at the [...]
I know that an indie rock band being interviewed on a nerdy podcast isn't exactly the best fit for a comedy podcast highlight, but Nerdist might as well be a straight-up comedy podcast and the members of Divine Fits might as well be comedians. Granted, Britt, Dan and Sam aren't known for being the most [...]

Who: Divine Fits at the Outdoor Theatre
In 3 or Fewer Words: Spoon, fork and knife.
Memorable Because: "We're called Divine Fits. This is not a beautiful day," Britt Daniel said, wilting in the oppressive late-afternoon sun in Indio. Well, now, that depends. Because the songs from "A Thing Called Divine Fits," lock-jawed, feral and tighter than your Coachella wristband, seemed a perfect palate-pleaser considering the mashed-potatoes folk that would follow on this stage from Of Monsters and Men. Daniel's project with Dan Boeckner (Wolf Parade/Handsome Furs) and Sam Brown (New [...]
“It’s the homeland!” one of the girls on the hotel shuttle yelped as we neared the festival. It really begged the question - who is the most common Coachella archetype? The only data I have to cull from is my experience from last year’s first weekend, but the situation was vastly different. Then, I went out west for the show without a media wristband or a hotel room. I camped amongst vets with Carpoolchella and other accoutrement decorating their vehicles, with the full skill set of how to survive the weekend. My best friend was my travel buddy and we [...]

Not another Year End List 2012 is officially in the books, and Three Colours has compiled its very favorites of the year. In our opinion, here's the best music of 2012. You may be surprised to see a year-end list released this late into the year, but after all the life-changing events that have occurred over the year, I'm just happy to finally get this out there. 2012 was a crazy great year! Top 13 LPs of 2012 [...]

Set times for 20132s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Annual Festival have been announced, and if you're like us at BBLA HQ, you're already mapping out a game plan for whom you want to see. The thing is, every year always presents some conflicts leaving you no choice but to choose one band over another. Conflicts in the desert may vary in degrees from person to person, but here are a few that are causing some hair-pulling ... Friday [...]

Shawn Brackbill You have to wonder in Kurt Vile ever regrets leaving The War On Drugs after touring their 2008 debut Wagonwheel Blues , considering the level of success the Philadelphia outfit would achieve with their second album, Slave Ambient . Or maybe not. Given that Vile's laid back, groovingly psychedelic guitar-rock travels a fairly parallel path to what Adam Granduciel is doing with The War On Drugs, their fanbases probably overlap pretty significantly and Vile's own 2011 effort, Smoke Ring [...]

Divine Fits transcended supergroup status almost as soon as they formed. Chalk it up to releasing one of the best albums of last year and slowly building a killer live show. After last month's victory run through Austin's SXSW, the quartet is hitting the road once more , despite some of the band members being busy with their own non-side projects. For this new leg, fans can expect to hear tracks from A Thing Called Divine Fits , a handful of covers, and even some new cuts, which the Fits hope to release soon. [...]
We're completely ecstatic to reveal the second wave of artists playing at Sled Island 2013! Lineup additions include Danish hardcore phenoms Iceage, indie rock royalty Superchunk, the Miami-based doom pop of Torche, The Night Marchers featuring members of Sled Island 2012 faves, Hot Snakes, psych-rock hype factory Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Weakerthans frontman John K. Sampson, and prolific lo-fi folksters Mount Eerie performing with a full band. Also announced today is the mind-melting masters of hip hop jazz improvisation, BadBadNotGood, hyperbole-inducing Ottawa-based producer Ryan Hemsworth, frantic Vancouver punk rockers White Lung, artful R&B pop crooner Javelin and genre-defying Los Angeles DJ, [...]

Divine Fits performed a couple tracks on Jimmy Kimmel Live during the week and I'm just getting around to giving them a watch. They blessed us with a track fronted by each of their singers. Surprisingly, neither was a track I would have expected, but that's just fine. I don't give some of the later tracks off A Thing Called Divine Fits enough play. "Like Ice Cream" on Kimmel "You Got Lucky" on Kimmel
Having been dubbed a “crafty veteran” by one local bystander, there are a few certain truths that I have discovered seven years deep into South By South West culture. 1) Always carry your phone charger because the battery will die; the ABC’s (Always Be Chargin’) as we here at Spinning Platters like to call it.
