It's been a minute since we've dipped into the All Saints Basement Sessions, but the latest sit-down with the mighty James Lavelle - he of many musical hats - seems like as good a place as any. As most readers of this blog (I see you, old beardos) are probably aware, James is the man behind the seminal Mo Wax label, which broke more ground than a ground breaking thing back in the 90's and onwards. There have been a billion tags applied to the Mo Wax sound, many of them cringe worthy in [...]

Zachary " Shigeto " Saginaw arrived at a new professional plateau in 2011, one where his years of hard work and dedication to finessing his glitchy bliss allowed him to finally approach music on a full-time basis. While collaborating with other artists and pushing his sound to the next level in '11, his Full Circle Remixes enabled a slew of equally talented producers to re-imagine his work. Now that he's enjoyed a big year — including relocating to New York City's best borough — we asked Saginaw to put the year into perspective for us. [...]

Japanese producer/turntablist DJ Krush will return to the US with his jazz-inflected hip hop beats to play at least two shows in February. One is at Music Hall of Williamsburg on February 19th ( tickets ), a celebration of 20 years behind the decks as a solo artist and part of his 20th anniversary world tour. With the kick-off party in Tokyo in July, DJ KRUSH's 20th anniversary of solo career opened its doors. The opening of the new chapter of the anniversary will be the long awaited releases of new tunes. [...]

DJ Krush is celebrating 20 years in the business, and he's showing no signs of slowing down. To commemorate his anniversary, Japan's king of spin is about to embark on a worldwide tour and will continue releasing new material via iTunes in preparation for a looming new solo album. Hugh Bohane got a chance to interview him just after his recent U.S tour. What have been some of the best memories of your 20 year career so far? DJ Krush: There have been many special memories in [...]

I finally got to see, probably, one of my favorite bands ever, like EVER last night at Brixton Academy. They go by The Music . I thought this might be an endearing way for me to start the post as they are Leeds boys and took pleasure in reminding us that we are southerners and they are not. Whatever to be honest the gig was out of this world, but in a typical way they are now splitting up and destined to remain only in the memories and ears of their fans. One other [...]

Back in '08 I started to get into Japanese hip hop pretty heavily. I cycled through most of the popular DJ's out there and was impressed by their use of soul and jazz samples. One thing in particular attracted me to some artists over others - the use of MC's. Nujabes is no doubt my favorite for this very reason, but a few others have also done this with much success, notably DJ Krush. Although, I've checked out a couple of his albums and really enjoyed it, I think I need to take another look at [...]

Sometimes things I write here make me think about other things, so then I have to write some things about those other things that the first thing made me think about. To wit... So just last week in my Fat Jon post I compared the Ample Soul Physician to the great Japanese producer DJ Krush and then realized, "What the fa-heck, I've never done a post on DJ Krush!" That's a traveshamockery! Because Mr. Hideaki Ishi is one of the all-time greats of the [...]

I always like it when a cover version differs radically from the original, and that just happens to be the case here. A young Bob Marley recorded his Sun Is Shining in the early seventies under the productional guidance of the one and only Lee Scratch Perry. It´s not Robert Nesta´s best song by far, but still very agreeable, with special thanks to Peter Tosh playing a subtle melodica. And then it´s time to shine for the Japanese duo of turntablist DJ Krush and trumpeter Toshinori Kondo. Find their superb, Miles-goes-triphop interpretation [...]
