I had the pleasure of catching Lulacruza this past Summer at the Biennial of the Americas event that included Juana Molina. The Argentinean/Colombian have collaborated with Vincent Moon ( La Blogotheque ) to potentially create a visual album that will take them through the all of Colombia to catch the many sounds the land has to offer. In order to achieve this goal, a Kickstarter page has been started where you can contribute to the project to make it a prosperous one. You can donate here and hopefully we can [...]

This letter arrived tangled in a tumbleweed that floated all the way to Los Angeles from Spindrift on tour. We extracted it carefully and found this message scrawled with the blood of a coyote. Hello all from Spindrift, Spindrift is taking pre-orders for our next brand new album due out Spring 2011 on Xemu Records. You can be the first to be a part of our next epic record entitled "Classic Soundtracks". Beyond that...you can do even more by being a part of musical history. We are very happy to be touring [...]

Fast Foot is every responsible parent's worst nightmare of who their children grow up to be. Just like a malignant cancer, this Russian crew is spreading some seriously dirty electro house around the globe. Although they aren't very well known in the west, this fact is beginning to change. Not only have they constructed an impressive discography but they also have a free podcast that just feeds you their new disgusting tracks in 320kbps! So let's examine the kind of filth that Fast Foot has been so [...]

One of my favorite indie releases from 2009 was an EP by St. Louis singer/songwriter Beth Bombara titled Beth Bombara and the Robotic Foundation . The six-song self-released CD by Beth was a stylistic switch from the pop-folk of previous solo effort Abandon Ship by pulling in some indie rock distortion and edginess that recalled Bettie Seveert . In particular, I love the harmonies on the track "Lights" which ended up on a bunch of my roadtrip mixes this past year. You can listen to "Lights" in the player below. For her [...]
Made from 100% pure buffalo extract! (Yes, that's a semen joke) I decided to go with the much more visually stunning "X" than the rudimentary "10." It makes me feel like I'm Julius Caesar or something. Next thing you know, I'm going to ditch the band and go solo. Hell, I might even record a synth album. The Stroke sucked, anyway. Right? Don't you think? Et tu, reader? A well-known man 'round these parts by the name of Stephen in Japan has sent along a very generous donation. So generous, in fact, [...]

Late last month brought major storms and flooding to the Midwest especially in the Chicago area . Many were affected including Chicago's independent record label Graveface Records . The storm caused three feet of water to inundate Graveface Records' stock and parts space in the Logan Square neighborhood, which caused 50-60% of their mostly assembled product to be destroyed. Even more devastating is that insurance will not cover any of the damages due to the flood being an "Act Of God." Therefore, Graveface is asking for donations through a donation-based raffle in [...]

Margaret Stutt who goes by the nom d'cordion Pezzettino has collaborated with Milwaukee-based producer LMNtylist on her follow up to her 2009 release Lion. Titled LubDub , it is a 10-track EP of, well- I guess they are love songs. Well, maybe not all of them are love songs, but certainly they are related to love and appear to be roughly arranged in a timeline of a love affair that is having some fits and starts getting off the ground. Originally the follow up to the moody, serrated toothiness [...]

"When we were writing songs for A Lesson in Crime, we were just hanging out, pleasing ourselves, not really thinking that people were going to hear them. Champ was a lot more like that than Elephant Shell." Latitude 2010, Suffolk, UK: Exclusive Interview with Tokyo Police Club The journey up to Latitude Festival in Southwold was particularly cramped. Whilst being in my friend's car, I ended up squashing all my backpacks and sleeping necesseties [...]
Local kids, Hideous Men , were set to play the local DIY-fest, Titwrench , last week and the duo had their gear stolen. Is nothing sacred these days? Candy Claws had just received some great press from P4K on their forthcoming album and this shizz happens to them. The Coloradoans were en route and poof. Their car goes up in flames and took their gear in the process on I-76. They still plan to tour, despite all of their gear going up in smoke. Their label, Two Syllable , has put together a pot that you can donate and help to replenish their gear. Talk about rat luck! Candy Claws-Sunbeam Show [mp3] [...]

I originally found out about the instrumental duo El Ten Eleven from my friend Erik who had heard them on his "Tortoise" Pandora station . He ordered their self-titled CD and shared it with me. Their chimey and buzzy guitar, drums and keyboards fit well with my regular diet of post rock bands like Trans Am and Tortoise . Their debut album provided an impressive five tracks to the soundtrack to the documentary Helvetica [...]

Slobberbone was a band with a body of rock, tires of country, and engine of punk. Another great band, The Drams had a similar body and tires, but its engine ran a bit more on pop. The driver in both of these two bands? Singer/guitarist Brent Best. Slobberbone reunited for shows in 2009 and proclaimed a new record to come out in 2010. I haven't seen any updated news on The Drams in awhile (sadly). But it seems Best is cleaning out the closets and wiping the slates clean, proverbially speaking, before gearing [...]

News that breaks our heart. Long-time Ripple favorites, Venomin James , a truly devastating doom/stoner metal band from Cleveland need your help. Jared Koston, the 40-year-old drummer, has been diagnosed with two brain tumors stemming from stage IV melanoma cancer. He was released from University Hospital in Cleveland to be at home with his family. "Jared's started radiation therapy, but his doctors have basically said that we should prepare for the worst," says Venomin James guitarist Joe Fortunato. "It has all happened so rapidly that it took us all by surprise. [...]

Originally we had included Quennect4 's open mic, 20hzx20kHz, in our list of Chicago's finest. Then we learned that Quennect4 had been forced by the city to close its doors after over four years of giving local artists a place to show their skills. But, after all those years of hard work the good folks at Q4 are not willing to go down easily. And here's where you come in: they're asking for donations, which can be easily pledged at their Kickstarter page . [...]
