Photos | Efterklang + Nightlands @ Doug Fir (PDX) Photos by Colin McLaughlin O n a night where I had to make myself go out, Efterklang impressed. It takes quite a bit of skill to turn someone's whole mood around, but that's exactly what Efterklang did with their slightly operatic and frequently creative arrangements. Maybe the lush instrumentation and gorgeous harmonies that guide "The Klang" - as Dave Hartley (of  Nightlands ) jokingly called them - is sourced from the same stuff that makes them such thoughtful crowd pleasers. Or maybe indie rock doesn't give us many opportunities [...]

Buke and Gase - Saturday Feb. 16th at the Doug Fir

Buke and Gase were last in Portland opening for Deerhoof, and although I didn't make it, more than one person commented that their set stole the show. After seeing them play last Saturday at the Doug Fir, I believe them. This him-and-her duo is truly the most innovative sound I've heard in a while. Their music is bold and unique not only because of their home-made hybrid instruments, a baritone ukelele and a bass/guitar blend. The equally bright and dark elements of their songwriting mix into something that makes you want to dance and bare your heart at the [...]

Pierced Arrows and Wooden Indian Burial Ground at the Doug Fir, Wed Jan 23

Photographer Leo Townsell and his camera were at the Pierced Arrows / Wooden Indian Burial Ground show at the Doug Fir on Wednesday night, and he sent these amazing photos our way. There's little visually that can do justice to the storm of Fred and Toody Cole kicking out the jams, but Leo has done a fantastic job of capturing it. Click on the photos to see them in their full glory. More after the jump! [...]

King Tuff, White Fang, and the Mean Jeans: Sunday Dec. 9 at the Doug Fir

The Doug Fir hosted a crazy fun line-up Sunday night, full of danceable pop-punk and noise. All three bands put out new records this year, and it was a healthy mix of old and new all around. THRASH THRASH THRASH. That is all. More noisy photos after the jump! [...]

Sea Wolf at the Doug Fir, Saturday November 3

Sea Wolf at the Doug Fir, Saturday November 3 Katie Swezey Sea Wolf at the Doug Fir, Nov 3 Sea Wolf played a sold out show last Saturday, in the middle of a great weekend of shows at the Doug Fir. The band (currently a five-piece) are touring in support of a new album, Old World Romance . The new album isn't a big departure from their previous work, but sounds still more full, more rich. This was definitely true for their live show, where in years past Alex Brown Church would have only had [...]

Nneka at the Doug Fir, October 30, 2012

Nneka at the Doug Fir, October 30, 2012 Rachel Milbauer Rachel Milbauer Just before everything got all Halloween-y, Nigerian-German singer/rapper/songwriter Nneka stopped by the Doug Fir on Tuesday night. Photograper Rachel Milbauer was there to take these photos of Nneka and her weird, part-invisible guitar. More after the jump—check 'em all out! Click on each photo for a larger version. [...]

Grimes, Elite Gymnastics, and Myths at the Doug Fir, Mon Aug 15 Jonah Levine Grimes Jonah Levine Grimes Grimes is not afraid of the dark. Live Video: The Hives at MFNW

Live Video: The Hives at MFNW photo by Morgen Schuler ( view set ) "Tick Tick Boom" indeed - on stage, The Hives practically explode. For years, the Swedish band's concerts have been the stuff of legend and singer Howlin' Pelle Almqvist is often touted as one of the best rock frontmen, ever! Imagine the insanity of The Hives and their fired up antics in the relatively small space of Portland's Doug Fir Lounge . On the last day of our broadcast during MusicfestNW , fans packed the venue to watch Pelle Almqvist, his guitarist brother Nicholaus, and [...]

The last two days of MusicfestNW brought a sold-out crowd to Pioneer Square and culminated in an epic performance from Silversun Pickups.

Twin Shadow at the Doug Fir, August 14

Twin Shadow at the Doug Fir, August 14 Minh Tran Minh Tran George Lewis Jr—AKA Twin Shadow —captivated a Doug Fir crowd on Tuesday night, playing mystical love songs from his crazygood new record Confess . We hear it was a great, dancey show filled with babes of both sexes. Minh Tran was there to put all these images into his magical camera box through some kind of witchcraft*, and we share [...]

Live Review: King Tuff Gets Rough at the Doug Fir

Live Review: King Tuff Gets Rough at the Doug Fir With two of Sub Pop Records’ most ballyhooed road warriors— King Tuff and Jaill —under the same log cabin-like roof Monday night, the chances that a small weekday crowd would show up with a whimper were put to rest early. With PDX Pop Now! all of 22 hours in the rear-view mirror, faithful fans of sugary, explosive rock converged at Doug Fir to see if they were Tuff enough. ( Editor's note: Dave Chappelle was spotted lurking in the corner in between sets. ) Before any kind of validation could be approached, however, newish Portland smarm-pop quartet the [...]

A Place To Bury Strangers 6/10 @ The Doug Fir; Photos

We found this rad slide show from Sunday nights A Place To Bury Strangers w/Dusted at The Doug Fir over on Melophobe. Photographer Jasper Croome was on hand armed with his trusty camera and captured the images above. We would like to tell Jasper well done son. Well done.

Photo Feature: A Place To Bury Strangers + Dusted - Doug Fir (Portland, OR; June 10, 2012) There are many things that follow A Place to Bury Strangers - accolades, fuzz, smoke - but the most prominent has always been a warning: bring earplugs. Like My Bloody Valentine, their show is a place where unprotected eardrums go to die. Sunday's show at the Doug Fir was no different. This mix of power and energy released itself as a wall of sound into a happy bunch of believers, who began calm but left animated. Though an electrical disturbance took the band's set-up down for a short stint, the crowd was unfazed, and spent their downtime joking [...]

Ramona Falls at the Doug Fir, Fri May 18

Ramona Falls at the Doug Fir, Fri May 18 Katie Swezey Last Friday night, Ramona Falls played a packed Doug Fir for the record release show of their latest, Prophet . In front of a sold-out crowd, the band broke in new guitarist Brandon Laws, as an impressive set of visuals—concocted by drummer Paul Alcott—were projected for each song. (Alcott at one point asked the audience to re-aim his projector back to its proper target, having suffered bumps from the crowd.) It was a great show, and the talented Katie Swezey was on hand [...]

Photo Feature: School of Seven Bells - Doug Fir (Portland, OR; Apr. 22, 2012) From the first throaty bar of "I Am Under No Disguise" to the last note of their finale, School of Seven Bells delivered a luscious wall of sound to the blissed-out crowd at the Doug Fir. "Wall of sound" isn't exactly accurate, though; it was more of a curtain of sound - one that flowed over and through the fans, as though someone had left the window open. That Was The Show That Was: Swervdriver | Doug Fir | Portland, OR | 4.5.12

[Swervdriver at the Doug Fir Lounge, Portland, OR, 4/5/2012. Photos by Edward Charlton] Thursday night saw the arrival of reunited shoegaze titans Swervedriver in Portland, Oregon at the immaculate Doug Fir Lounge. The band was met with a rapturous audience of hardcore fans who stood in awe to the muscled, blissed-out swirl unleashed, as the band played favorites from their solid 90's discography. The night was made special by the fact that the group were unencumbered with the tedium of converting new listeners, like the scene they came from- it was a time to [...]
