Last night Lord Huron played at Portland venue Doug Fir. The crowd was excitable as the band ran through tracks from their album Lonesome Dreams and a cover of the Kinks' "Strangers." We sent Colin McLaughlin to get some snaps of the action.

Photos by Colin McLaughlin O n a night where I had to make myself go out, Efterklang impressed. It takes quite a bit of skill to turn someone's whole mood around, but that's exactly what Efterklang did with their slightly operatic and frequently creative arrangements. Maybe the lush instrumentation and gorgeous harmonies that guide "The Klang" - as Dave Hartley (of  Nightlands ) jokingly called them - is sourced from the same stuff that makes them such thoughtful crowd pleasers. Or maybe indie rock doesn't give us many opportunities [...]

Buke and Gase were last in Portland opening for Deerhoof, and although I didn't make it, more than one person commented that their set stole the show. After seeing them play last Saturday at the Doug Fir, I believe them. This him-and-her duo is truly the most innovative sound I've heard in a while. Their music is bold and unique not only because of their home-made hybrid instruments, a baritone ukelele and a bass/guitar blend. There are many things that follow A Place to Bury Strangers - accolades, fuzz, smoke - but the most prominent has always been a warning: bring earplugs. Like My Bloody Valentine, their show is a place where unprotected eardrums go to die. Sunday's show at the Doug Fir was no different. This mix of power and energy released itself as a wall of sound into a happy bunch of believers, who began calm but left animated. In front of a sold-out crowd, the band broke in new guitarist Brandon Laws, as an impressive set of visuals—concocted by drummer Paul Alcott—were projected for each song. From the first throaty bar of "I Am Under No Disguise" to the last note of their finale, School of Seven Bells delivered a luscious wall of sound to the blissed-out crowd at the Doug Fir. "Wall of sound" isn't exactly accurate, though; it was more of a curtain of sound - one that flowed over and through the fans, as though someone had left the window open.
