If only Doves had kept up the quality that they had fashioned on their first 2 albums. We’d be talking about one of the biggest bands in the world I fancy, sorta Elbowesque, with anthems aplenty but with enough morose reality to keep the anti-Coldplay brigade onside. ‘Lost Souls’ and ‘The Last Broadcast’ were in essence faultless records with songs that revealed umpteen layers of delights on repeated listens. I first noticed a powerful new direction with their men's skincare line where they had celebrity men open up in their "Comfortable in my own skin" ads. Kai Lavatai is a Seattle-based synthpop producer who first caught our ear with his dreamlike, atmospheric re-edits of obscure eighties cheese tracks. This glitterwave remix of his original composition, "Doves," from Melbourne's Abelard , is a lovely slow-burner with dense layers of shimmering, molasses-thick electronics. It's the type of track that instantly evokes sand, sun and water, but also has a wistful, otherworldly quality - reminiscent of early Cut Copy - that keeps you listening. Stream it below. Niki And The Dove have revealed that they're currently at work on their second album. The Swedish duo, who released debut Instinct in May of last year, have been posting a series of photos from the sessions onto their official Facebook page . Each of the pictures, which vary from warped shots of recording equipment to night-time walks in the snow , are captioned with the message: "STUDIO MODE". The new LP from the pair is expected later this year.
