After reading Erik's article on Iggy & The Stooges a few weeks ago, I decided to revisit one of my favourite albums and a genuine piece of music history. The Idiot by Iggy Pop released in 1977 and produced by David Bowie . After the second break up of The Stooges and due to his uncontrollable drug addiction, Iggy checked himself into an L.A mental Institution in 1975 . David Bowie remained one of his few regular visitors(Bowie's 1973 song " Jean Genie " featured on Aladdin Sane is thought to be based [...]

Epitaph recording artists The Hot Melts released their debut album on September 7th. The band have taken these tough economic times into consideration and are offering their own stimulus package in a sense, For a one week period, the Liverpudlian lads are offering their 13-song set for free when you sign-up for their mailing list . The band are receiving some positive press in the UK and it doesn't require much thought to acknowledge that with the proper marketing they'll [...]

I came home this evening feeling that I've been fucked one too many times for my liking this week. It's something that wouldn't be wise to openly discuss in a public forum, but giving you the gist is an appropriate introduction for this entry. I did something a few years ago I swore I'd never do again, I sold my soul in a sense and now the heat of Purgatory is becoming a bit uncomfortable. Enough said. Bands like Portland's The Taxpayers restore [...]

As teenagers, Milwaukee-based band Flights were filling 200+ capacity venues in their hometown of Milwaukee, WI. That early success didn't bring them to any new levels and their pianist/vocalist, Eric Hillman, parted ways with the band to study film scoring at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. Years later, Flights found themselves desperate to record 4 of the 100+ ideas floating around them. They gathered in a country home in the middle of Wisconsin and brought those 4 songs to life with [...]

I have a love/hate relationship with technology...especially when it comes to cell phones. When I'm paying for gas on my way to work, the last thing I want to hear is someone's cheesy ringtone or their conversation about last night. I just think it's incredibly rude and have never had the patience for that sort of thing. Anyhow... When I was contacted by Jared DiDomenico from New York's Nuclear O'Reilly today with an introduction to the "World's 1st iPhone Album" I proceeded with [...]

Having formed only last Winter, this quartet from New York show a real musical maturity with their debut e.p Primary Colours . It's kinda sleazy, smokey, late night bar music in the best tradition. Vocalist Heather Christian is a sublime talent who totally compliments the musical talents of the band (which are many). There is something special about these guys that keeps drawing me back for repeat listens. They have caught the eye of Deli Magazine in New York having been named band of the month in June. The best thing of all is that the e.p [...]

I'm always more than willing to help when a band reaches out and asks me to share a free download of their album with our readers. Brooklyn's The Library (with former members of The Mayflies USA and The Comas) have made their new album, The Life And Times Of Rosa Lee , available to you with no expectations in return. The band's wide range of influences can be heard throughout the recording. If you're a fan of music with pop sensiblilties ala Big Star mixed with softer shoegaze in the vein of Slowdive or Mazzy [...]

Does anyone remember the band that won our "Best Unsigned Band" contest way back when? They were called The Moths! and featured Dave Lightfoot on guitar. Anyhow, The Moths! are no longer, but Dave contacted me today to let me know his new band, Me My Head , have finished their debut album and provided me the details of how you can get it. Dave took a few of the songs he had written during the time he spent with The Moths! and [...]

Our friend Ivan from Chicago's MR RUSSIA touched base today and informed me the band had a new EP that they wanted to share with you. The 6 song effort is titled Training For The Gameshow Host and comes with no strings attached. The band aren't going to make you jump through any hoops like signing up for a mailing list before you can download the EP...this one's yours by simply clicking here . Prefer a physical copy to the digital download? The band have made a version of Training for the [...]
Cambridge-based Passion Pit were the most recent guests to record a session for Myspace "Transmissions". If you're interested in checking out some the four songs the band recorded from their debut full-length, Manners , click here . What's nice about these sessions is that the songs are completely free to download, so not only do you get to enjoy the video footage of the artist performing live, you can download the songs if you enjoy them for repeated listens (or something). I've included [...]

Our friends at Sub Pop dropped one of the most righteous e-mails into my inbox earlier today. If news of a new digital sampler weren't enough, they also shared new songs from a few of their summer releases for your downloading pleasure too! While it doesn't take much to impress me, this is news worth mentioning. The 2009 Sub Pop Cybersex Digital Sampler contains 14 songs from artists like Fleet Foxes, Handsome Furs, The Vaselines and Vetiver. If you're a regular reader, I've posted the majority of the songs shared in the sampler previously...but there are [...]
I'm slowly reaching the point where the light at the end of the tunnel which is often referred to as my inbox is becoming visible. It's a pleasant feeling is what it is. While I managed to check in periodically while I was away, what I didn't delete on a day-to-day basis accumulated into a mountain that would make Rainier start to wonder if it were more of a molehole. The Now or Never EP from Alice McLaughlin patiently sat awaiting [...]

Leaving on a jet plane, don't know when I'll be back again. OK, that's complete bullshit, I'll be back on Tuesday. What I'm getting at is that I'm hoping to enjoy every second of this holiday weekend and probably won't be checking in every day. Before I go, I wanted to share a Sampler download that hit my inbox. Misra & Absolutely Kosher Records are serving a digital sampler titled Soon which contains 8 songs from forthcoming releases, including a number of new signings. [...]

The Record of the Week Club is a celebration of the Winnipeg music scene and was engineered by local Winnipeg producer/musician Mike Petkau ( Les Jupes , The Liptonians , Ian La Rue ). Every Wednesday for 16 weeks, 3 musicians showed up at MCM Studios in Winnipeg. What would follow could be compared to a blind musical date. A couple of artists had the evening to create a piece. What would come out of it are co-creations between members of The Liptonians , The Weakerthans , Chic Gamine , [...]

Slim Twig 's debut full-length, Contempt! is currently available in Canada, but will drop in US on June 9th. In celebration of the album's Canadian release, and a nod to the hip hop mixtapes he loves, Slim Twig has decided to flood the streets with a free mixtape! Before you download Slim's offerings, check out what folks are saying about his new album: "It's like someone gave Nick Cave a sampler and a pile of mescaline and locked him in [...]
To promote the launch of their new tour with Jane's Addiction and Street Sweeper, Trent Reznor just unleashed a free sampler to his horde of fans. The sampler contains a few tracks from each act and is available in multiple formats! CRAAAAAAZY! Get your free sampler here ! Street Sweeper , by the way, is Rage Against The Machine's Tom Morello and The Coup's Boots Collins. Strange combination. I am not very impressed with their tracks on the EP, but hopefully they make up for that live. Stanton Moore of Galactic is said to have been [...]
