Jigga proves that dollars don't buy dance moves I’ve started a few ‘regular’ columns or features during my time charting this site through the murky waters of blogdom. Most of them fall by the wayside (‘ Under The Radar ’, any one? ' Interview Archives ' perhaps?). But there’s one column that that I seem to come back to on an annual basis. Ladies and gentlemen, back by lukewarm demand – it’s time for the annual Forbes Hip Hop Rich List ! (cue canned apathy). As [...]

From authors to celebrities , it seems Forbes is always publishing some new list of who's making an obscene amount of money. Today, they've brought us the "Cash Kings of 2011: Hip-Hop's Top 20 Earners." For music-industry nerds, it's a fascinating list. The big take-home, as far as we can tell, is that a hit album doesn't have nearly as much to do with a rapper's earning potential as what else he's doing - producing and endorsing products are big, and three of this year's top five earners are also moguls. Check out the full [...]

While you're poring over the reviews of Jay-Z and Kanye West's newly-released LP Watch The Throne — and, you know, actually listening to the album — consider this: Jay actually is on the throne, according to Forbes . The 41-year-old Brooklyn MC has topped the mag's annual Cash Kings list of hip hop's top earners, with $37 million in the bank, for a staggering fourth time in five years. Just behind Hova is Diddy and Kanye, while "Super Bass" diva Nicki [...]

No matter what you have to say about Watch The Throne , Jay-Z does own one throne and that is the top of the 2011 Rapper’s Forbes List. Jay-Z pulled off the hat trick and has topped the list three times in a row. Gathering just under 40 million dollars in for 2011. I see his 2012 stock rising because of Watch The Throne . Mr. Swag or Diddy comes through at numero dos with $35 million. Hov's WTT counter partner, Kanye West, brings in $16 million. Lil Wayne and his father Birdman both [...]

I once said to my ex that the most empowered I ever felt at Get Right (a testosterone-laden club night we’d go to in Columbus, Ohio) was the time the DJ played “Single Ladies.” While the playlist for the night ranged from Pac & Dre’s “California Love,” an inexplicable favorite for a place extremely far from its setting, to Pharoahe Monch’s “Simon Says” to 8ball & MJG’s “Alcohol Pussy Weed”, Beyonce’s kiss off to a dude who didn’t realize how good he had it was an anomaly. Until it reached its saturation point (Liza Minelli’s cover in Sex [...]

The White Panda just sent over a couple new full-length mashes off of their recent slam-dunk mash album Pandamonium . The first track -and my favorite- is a mash of Dr. Dre (and Snoop) x Mike Posner. Purty dope. [Audio Clip: View Full Post To Listen] Download: The White Panda - D.R.E. Don't Go The second track mashes Jay-Z (and Lil' Wayne) x The Jackson 5. Yes, wild. To be honest, there are so many of these lists that float around I forget which is which. Forbes compiled their top five wealthiest Hip-Hop artists and the tabulation pretty much went as expected. With the exception for one name. 1. Sean Combs a.k.a. Diddy a.k.a. Puffy a.k.a. Puff or let Gotty™ tell it, Big Luce. 2. Jay-Z 3. Dr."Detox-Is-Still-Coming" Dre 4. Birdman 5. 50 Cent But when it comes [...]

Between Diddy, 50, and Birdman, there's all the lyrical fortitude of a Speak & Spell. This week, Forbes magazine named the five wealthiest rappers on the planet: Sean "Diddy" Combs, Jay-Z, Dr. Dre, 50 Cent and Birdman, in that order. The publisher might as well have photocopied my list of "Worst Working MCs." Well, almost. I'd argue that you can't really count Dr. Dre as a rapper, at least not principally. He's been dangling Detox in front of his fans for almost a [...]
Filed under: The Hit List We present the first of our guides to more than 50 new albums to be released in 2011 -- mostly for the first few months of the year -- with more to come as 2011 progresses. (Note that all dates are subject to change, and albums are released on different days in different parts of the world.) We'll be putting up [...]

Welcome back to The Recommender as we look ahead to another year of excellent contemporary music. One year ago we completed a similar post, looking ahead to the albums that were predicted for a release in 2010. You can find that old post here and check out just how many predicted albums actually arrived. No blogger has a perfect selection of sources, but we think you will agree that there's a pretty high hit rate from last year's list, although unfortunately the likes of The White Stripes and Radiohead stayed as rumours. Below we list our [...]

It’s common knowledge that years of relentless performing led Eminem to his multiple drug dependencies and four year hiatus from Hip-Hop, and since then he’s been notoriously known to very, very rarely grace the live stage. So naturally when Marshall and Hov linked up for the Home And Home tour in Detroit and New York, Hip-Hop went completely bananas. However only some of us-well to be more accurate, almost none of us-were able to actually attend the show. For the few of you that were there, this momentous concert will live on [...]

Two new Dre & Em collabs have surfaced the net. The first, “Syllables,” features an all star cast that includes 50 Cent, Jay-Z, Cashis and Stat Quo, and confronts the growing trend of r&b fused rap that focuses on the production more than the lyrics. Em raps about how people only remember the chorus (“cause the chorus repeats the same four words for us”) than mockingly sings “Shorty I love you, will you love me too?” It's a refreshing reminder of Em's wittier pre- Relapse days. Hova's lyrics are quite memorable as well. The second is a revamped version [...]

Around here, there's never an off day, especially with the presence of Twitter, Kanye West, Lady Gaga, M.I.A., Damon Albarn, and a whole slew of others. So while you were busy opening gifts, returning said gifts, and toasting to the turn of the decade, we were doing all of it with our eyes glued to our laptops and iPhone screens. And while our loved ones may have been perplexed by our seemingly untreatable addiction to keeping up with every bit of breaking news, they'll never understand that our greatest gift is being able to keep you - our loyal readers [...]

After listening to the leaks from Eminem in December, "Difficult" is definitely the best in my opinion. I wasn't super impressed with the rest, despite the star-studded line up of "Syllables". Although it seems to be an incomplete version, "Difficult" is heavy as hell. I can't wait to hear the finished version (if there ever is one). The track is about DeShaun Dupree Holton, AKA Proof, one of Mather's good childhood friends and most notably a member of D12, Eminem's rap group. Proof was shot and killed in April of 2006, following [...]
