I'm not sure if long running trip-soul NYC band Mudville is still active, but their lead singer Marilyn Carino 's solo record "Little Genius" keeps faith to that project's sound - it looks like the other half of Mudville (producer Ben Rubin) is also involved to some extent in this record. Marilyn's soulful alto takes us for a mesmerizing ride through mostly downtempo, dark tunes with electronic fluorishes, whose natural listening environment is any space suitable for love making. Though we won't see the new album from Kayo Dot (entitled Coyote ) until it's released by Hydra Head in February of 2010, the band do have a single US tour date currently scheduled and it just happens to be in New York City. Saturday night we hit up the Marco Trio show with guest star Jon Fishman (of Phish) at Drom on 6th and Ave A. Overall, I was very impressed with the show and the venue. For those of you who have never been, Drom is an underground venue, with a capacity of probably 500-700, a huge bar that is deceptively easy to get drinks, and even a lounge area next to the band if you want to spend more money for a perfect view.
