Hidden Shoal Recordings is proud to announce the release of the new freely downloadable single ' Surry Hills ' by Perth-based multi-instrumental pop sextet Apricot Rail . The single follows on from their highly praised self-titled debut album of 2009. "Imagine the ethereal pop of early Múm, the whimsy of Sigur Rós' more optimistic moments, and (occasionally) the emotional edge of The Twilight Sad. This is consummate indie post-rock laced with Australiana, and well worth checking out. " - Rave Magazine [...]

Now that Hidden Shoal is a bouncy five years old, local music rag Drum Media Perth recently caught up with Hidden Shoal's very own Cam Merton to discuss the label's inception, ethos, and the way in which we've blossomed into a label of delectable repute. And remember, as part of our celebrations you can grab our latest compilation album Hydrozoa [...]
Excerpt: "City of Satellites have crafted an album filled with dense space and fueled by vintage synthesizers and melodically rich vocals.... the production values on the record rival that of heavyweights M83 and Aphex Twin." Drum Media

City of Satellites' debut album Machine Is My Animal has been receiving some attention over the past month, and rightfully so! Of late they have been reviewed on Luna Kafe , Drum Media, The Band Next Door and [sic] Magazine , with their music being described as everything from sci-fi rock to dream-pop, shoegazer and electronic-pop, reminiscent of the likes of M83. Their single Stranger Than Fiction is available here for free. City of Satellites - Stranger Than Fiction City of Satellites [...]
Excerpt: " Crampling is a deliciously dreamy slice of tender post-shoegaze. Chris Mason's signature reverb-soaked vocals sit perfectly with Miriam Braun's delicate tones, creating a lush, thoroughly satisfying soundscape... they represent some of the best music [Perth] offers at the moment" Drum Media

This week's Drum Media Perth has wonderful things to say about the new My Majestic Star single Crampling. Pick up a copy of Drum Media to check out the review. You can download this delicious single for free at the Hidden Shoal Store . My Majestic Star - Crampling My Majestic Star - Crampling
Excerpt: "Their self-titled album is a very poignant and layered affair; a piece of art that attempts to paint pictures with ambient noise, chiming chords, simple brass and the occasional glock. At times the music is soft and introverted, as the elegantly titled 'If You Can't Join Them, Beat Them', while at others songs take a more urgent, somewhat heavy approach such as opener 'A Public Space'... The lads [and lass!] have put together the foundations for a very interesting record... they should be highly commended." Drum Media

Excerpt: "Sicilian quintet HC-B have bundled together a glorious collection of tracks here that summons the restraint and patience of bands like The For Carnation, the energy and effervescence of math-rock, and a gorgeous melodic sensibility that reminds us all why we liked post-rock in the first place... an album of small details - gutteral guitars are lifted up by wisps of white noise, delicate passages float by just that little bit smoother via backing theremins, and the occasional string section adds the requisite cinematic flourishes for which the album claims its title... enough inspired twists and solid jams to [...]

Apricot Rail succeed where so many other post-rock bands fail because they're able to get to the point. What genre-defining bands like Explosions In The Sky take eight or nine minutes to do Apricot Rail are capable of in three and a half. This impeccable sense for the immediacy of great pop structures is arguably one of their biggest assets, and is displayed masterfully on their debut album. It's a great formula, and they've nailed it here on more than one occasion, whilst maintaining an eclectic approach to texture and timbre. 'If You Can't Join Them, Beat Them' [...]
Excerpt: "[Jumpel] has not lost the intimacy that a minimalist attitude often affords... Jumpel's delicate piano motifs mesh seamlessly with his fuzzed-out electronic hi-hits, pizzicato strings and tones of marimba. There are no fancy-pants-allegro piano solos in Jumpel's repertoire, just gently executed tinkerings on the keyboard, but it's the relative simplicity and sense of calm that you notice, especially on repeated listens." Drum Media

Jumpel's superb new album Deuxieme Bureau has just received a glowing review in the Perth street paper Drum Media. Visit Jumpel's reviews section to read an excerpt. Deuxieme Bureau is available in CD and mp3 format from the HSR Store . Jumpel Dense Dust Jumpel - Dense Dust
"Dim the lights, light the incense, pour yourself a glass of white wine and allow yourself to float away as this duo - a singer, guitarist and synth player from Adelaide, a drummer, programmer and synth player from Sydney - takes you on a languorous cruise through some downbeat, moonlit, stonergaze place inside your mind. There's no hurry, just three contemplative tunes, with the shortest clocking in at just less than seven and a half minutes. Jarrod Manuel's brief, whispered, abstract vocal passages work here more like bridges between adjoining sound/dreamscapes." Drum Media Sydney
Single Of The Week: "You know when you catch a faint smell of something that totally spins you out and reminds you of something you haven't though about since you were six, completely changing your day? City Of Satellites have synthesised this feeling into music. The Adelaide/Sydney duo's debut EP plays out like a strange adventure through an exotic foreign city - without the implied pretentiousness. Opening track 'Moon In The Sea' carries faint traces of shoegaze heroes M83 and My Bloody Valentine, with faint, androgynous vocals drifting in and out of clarity over a dreamy soundscape. Though only three [...]

Excerpt: "For those who haven't visited Portland, Oregon seems like a town of musical wonder, with indie pop and experimental success stories living in artistic harmony. With diverse instrumentation gliding through different moods, Iretsu have a distinctly pop approach to post-rock. Glistening beauty shines on a backdrop of fast paced drumming only to morph out of nowhere into soft vocals, then again into a keys-based pop ride that takes a few steps left before dissovling into a beautifully lush mesh." Drum Media
Excerpt - "The hugely experienced songwriting duo of Craig Hallsworth (The Bamboos, The Healers) and Liam Coffey (The Rainyard, Header) brings influences from both sides of the Atlantic to the table, making the chiming, country-tinged guitars, Blur-ish vocals and rock-riffs of 'Carson Dyle' a possibility and more importantly, a beautifully cohesive reality...Add the accomplished musicianship of these Perth-music veterans, and it's hardly surprising the album, for the most part, 'blurs' its influences into forms both fresh and timeless." Drum Media (Perth)
