Bloc Party encountered a crowd chomping at the bit in Oakland, but fell just short of meeting everyone's unrealistically high expectations.

After bursting onto the scene in 2010, no one could have predicted that Dum Dum Girls would be built to last. Rising up in a scene dominated by similarly simplistic and sun-soaked garage-rockers (Cloud Nothings, Best Coast, Vivian Girls) Dum Dum Girls were hardly considered to be leaders of their pack. While incredibly enjoyable and irresistible, early Dum Dum Girls singles “Jail La La” and “Bhang, Bhang, I’m a Burnout” framed Dum Dum Girls as a group with more catchy hooks than novel ideas. It’s 2012 and Dum Dum Girls have managed to retain relevancy in the vicious blogosphere not [...]

Dum Dum Girls “Lord Knows” It's taken me a long time to finally jump on the Dum Dum Girls train. I never disliked them exactly, but their music never really struck a cord (uhg sorry) with me either. That all changed after I heard the very beautiful "Lord Knows" for the first time. As soon as I heard the song I knew I wanted to do a post for it, so it was serendipitous that the Christin Turner [...]

Dum Dum Girls - End Of Daze EP By Russell Warfield Whether you like the fact or not, it's becoming clear that 'Coming Down' was not just the emotional centrepiece of the fine Only In Dreams LP, but also a pivot upon which the entire Dum Dum Girls trajectory is turning. Of course, Dum Dum Girls have always primarily been a vehicle of necessity for delivering Dee Dee's material, but ever since 'Coming Down' – and never more so than with this End [...]

[mp3] Dum Dum Girls: "Lord Knows" We have a massive amount of respect for Dum Dum Girls . Starting as a dime-a-dozen lo-fi girl group, Dum Dum Girls have honed their songwriting, image and sound to remain cutting edge, and downright excellent - while their lesser peers (see Vivian Girls) have disappeared. Dum Dum Girls began as a band we were not destined to like, and have matured into a band we might end up loving. Their new EP End of Daze comes out today on Sub Pop.

Dum Dum Girls have unveiled the new video for one of this years more impressive follow ups, "Lord Knows". continue reading >>

Dum Dum Girls' newest EP sounds nice, but where's the beef? Sub Pop, 2012 5.9 / 10.0 It seems as if we're about to witness the slow and painful death of girl-groups. Sure, this trend has been evident since the release of the Vivian Girls' rather disappointing 2011 LP, Share [...]

Somber, soft and shoegazingly brilliant "Trees and Flowers" rises above most tracks from any LP, yet this track comes from the Dum Dum Girls' newest EP, End of Daze . Lead singer Dee Dee Penny drives the emotion and tempo with her downtrodden vocals as chime-like guitar chords roll through with the settling keyboard play. If this song had a violin, you could just waste away the day soaking in the sun filled with a glum satisfaction. "Trees and Flowers" is a musical piece of art where the empathy of the listener can't be explained. [...]

Jonah Bromwich bleached his hair black to write this review. End of Daze is the Dum Dum Girls third EP. It's their fifth release overall. In other words, they are no longer a new band. That's a trying time for any group, especially for one led by a volatile personality like Kristin Gundred, a.k.a Dee Dee Penny. If you paid close attention to the Girls’ last album, the heavily underrated Only In Dreams , you could hear the strain that the frontwoman was [...]

With the classic rock styled opening clack and pop of the drum-kit on "Lord Knows," it's clear that the Dee Dee and the Dum Dum Girls are no longer your proverbial female noise-pop outfit, but a band that is looking to tackle something more. Dee Dee's balladic vocals are unlike anything we've heard from her before, and they demonstrate a skill-set, both as a songwriter and a singer, that take her to another artistic level. In short, "Lord Knows" is an ambitious track that the Dum Dum Girls completely own; they shot for the stars and made it look easy. [...]

The Dum Dum Girls have been on a serious roll this past year, making the art of creating timeless, emotion-heavy indie pop-rock seem as easy as blinking, and on their new EP End of Daze (officially due September 25th, but stream-able here ) the band show little signs of easing back, cooking up five more doses of retro-tinted ear comfort to keep fans satisfied until the next go 'round. While a significant portion of their recent work carries an air of sounding like its been around forever, with [...]
