Opening the proceedings in the gorgeous Leamington Assembly were local duo Coves . Stepping out onto a fog laden stage the band played some pre-recorded backing music which, in time, they began to perform on top of. Initially this was immensely unimpressive. Bands adding some pre-recorded sound to their set is acceptable as it can be difficult for smaller groups to pay and find musicians to help them. However Coves seemed to be actually performing very little and it was doubly annoying that singer Beck Woods, initially, struggled to perform to any reasonable standard. I warmed to the [...]
Portland's Loaded for Bear has released their new full-length album 'The Exit Carnival'. This sophomore release available in 12" vinyl or in digital form is a dark, piano-centric, baroque-pop cascade of strings, organs, synth hooks, layered guitars, baritone vocals and layered harmony, backed by eclectic beats and bass and baritone guitars. The album and accompanying [...]

Download great new covers of A-Ha, the Rolling Stones, Nirvana, Neil Young, Low, Echo and the Bunnymen, Adele, the Beach Boys, and Nena.

As my friends well know, I have a soft spot for late '70's and '80's rock, particularly the bands who first delved into the darker, more atmospheric soundscapes. Joy Division led the way and could have owned the dark side of rock had it not been for a number of innovative bands such as Echo & The Bunnymen, The Chameleons (UK), Bauhaus, The Cure, The Sisters of Mercy and others who have expanded the genre with their own unique visions, songs and arrangements. The '90's zeitgeist moved away from these gloom artists to [...]
Horrible news tucked into the Mail today about Janice Long being mugged for her Echo And The Bunnymen backstage pass outside the BBC. It happened at the end of September; a 51 year-old woman is due to appear in court in December. -- Visit No Rock & Roll Fun to comment, complain and kvetch

Ravens & Chimes Cover Echo & the Bunnymen Ravens & Chimes — an incredibly promising NYC band that graced our Waynestock stage earlier this year — have managed to make the title track off Echo & the Bunnymen's moody 1984 masterpiece, Ocean Rain , their own with tender, tight-knit harmony vocals and delicate piano/synth flourishes while retaining a reverent nod to the original. Hear their take above thanks to Cokemachineglow , where you can also grab a free MP3 of the tune.
As a founding member of legendary bands Joy Division and New Order, Peter Hook easily secured his place in music history. Now, 30 years after the death of Joy Division singer Ian Curtis, Hook has taken to the road reviving the band's albums Unknown Pleasures and Closer in live form, a show which makes its way to North America this week Just before setting off, Rocker's Chris Adams got a chance to chat with Peter about his career, legacy, and what fans can expect from the upcoming string of [...]

The Cure [...]

We won't call out some of the obvious one's in this playlist but we will say this weather channel business is really put the scare in the upper North East. The sheer scale of it has people literally running for the hills to seek higher ground. Anyway this play list goes out to user @daanvanrossum because he asked me what was on my Hurricane playlist and i just told him I daho's You Were A Dick was a good rain record and walked away. That was sort of rude but I told him I'd work on [...]
What a week of surprises. An earthquake rattled NYC . Steve Jobs terminated himself . And a hurricane's coming out of nowhere to slap the NE somethin' fierce. So why not some equally unexpected collaborations, covers, and other tunes? Damn right. Enjoy thoroughly. Bon Iver x James Blake "Fall Creek Boys Choir" Tokyo Police Club "Sweetness" (Jimmy Eat World) feat. Michael Angelakos of Passion Pit The Quakes "The Killing Moon" (Echo & The Bunnymen) [...]

Big Dipper North East rock was never so eloquently defined than by the alternative music vehicle known as Big Dipper . I meant this to be a follow-up post on the music from City Gardens Riot on the Dance Floor post but needless to say when a group makes a melodic dent like these guys did it's worth one of my retro-posts because a lot of the submissions I'm getting just don't rank. This is though one of those bands I trekked down to Trenton to see opening up [...]
Auckland, New Zealand, City of Sails, home of the Sky Tower, various volcanoes and rugby. Not to mention the band Cut Off Your Hands, which I used to confuse with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and in turn Does it Offend You, Yeah? Both great indie bands in their own right, though out of the three, Cut Off Your Hands is the most relatable. Singer Nick Johnston has more than just brooding good looks on his side, he's got the versatile vocals to match. The soothing side of Robert Smith and the lighter side of Ian McCulloch, with [...]
