Ceremony, Burning Hearts, and Memory Tapes are three different artists with very different sounds. Their influences certainly intersect though, allowing the material to sound like creative odes rather than blend replications of genres and movements that are now in the past. They encompass a wide range of styles - from glam-inspired post-punk to flamboyant dance-pop - and remain interesting in the process.

Unfortunately this musical month was almost overshadowed by an unrelated event in which the often immoral British public expressed their extreme moral disgust at the actions of a few of their immoral members. Days were spent wondering whether it was more important that Rebekah Brooks looks like a media-mogul version of The Simpson’s Sideshow Bob or that she may have been editor of some newspaper at around the time that the whole voicemail listening thing happened. Just incase anyone was thinking of hacking it, you can listen to my voicemail anytime. It’s just my Mum asking where I am constantly. [...]

Yesterday we posted Part One of Paul Brown's Latitude Diary. It only seems right that Part Two should follow... Bah-titude (Photo by Jodie Brown) Saturday After a scorching hot Friday, it's no major surprise that it starts pissing down on Saturday. A bit of rain shouldn't really throw a pair of North-East residents off-kilter, but we still spend the morning drifting around trying [...]

Creation Records' Alan McGee is quoted as saying, "Liverpool in the ’80s was like Hollywood to me. The Wild Swans were part of the greatness of that city.” The Wild Swans released one single in 1982 with the help of Echo & the Bunnymen's drummer Pete de Freitas who not only played drums on The Revolutionary Spirit, but also put up the money for the recording studio. The Wild Swans were the brainchild of former Teardrop Explodes keyboard player Paul Simpson. That first legendary single was nearly the end of [...]

Nel cd "Do it Clean" tutti i classici (o quasi) della band guidata da Ian Mecculloch che superano la prova del tempo mantenendo la freschezza di questa band della new wave inglese. Nice weather is right around the corner. Know how I know? ‘Cause so many bands are loading up their tour buses and vans and hitting the road. To which I say woo hoo! Some are doing club shows, others are gearing up larger venues including festivals (Hello Coachella and Sasquatch!), and there’s something for everyone. Hopefully this list will inspire you to get off your couch and check out some of these bands live. We all need a little rock n' roll to make us feel good. If you have additions to the list [...]

For three decades Echo & The Bunnymen have been serving up some of the finest indie/post-punk on the planet and they can throw together a set list to rival any band. In recent years however, McCulloch & co. have taken to touring classic albums instead. Do It Clean was recorded at a sold out show [...]

Words, videos, and pictures by Rick Moslen The 11th Annual Primavera Sound Festival assaulted my ears at the end of May in its regular home alongside the marvelous shores of Barcelona, Spain. For three full nights (and two shorter evenings bookending the event), the eight main outdoor stages and massive auditorium hosted over two hundred of the best artists in the world of indie rock/pop/hip-hop/noise/folk/et c without the burden of dirty camp sites (visitors retreat to their hostels or apartments), or the overcrowded frustration of not sharing the same time zone as the band you’re [...]

26-28 May, 2011 Part 1 of our bumper 3 part round up of Primavera 2011. You can read Part 2 here tomorrow. With a typically amazing lineup, Barcelona´s Primavera Sound festival took place last weekend. A mix of nearly all the best bands doing the rounds, it often redefines the meaning of “painful clash” – Pulp versus Kode9 playing a set of Burial material, Low coming up against Belle and Sebastian , the fear in your mind over what major sacrifices would have [...]

There is a shape-shifting, new wave heart beating (ahem, loudly) within the Midriff Records camp, within a new band that is as comfortable trading in raunchy guitar is it is with fluid electronics . Louder My Dear is the vehicle of Dave Grabowski, who previously helmed Midriff act Scuba . In addition to steering the nine-month old Louder My Dear , Mr. Grabowski is currently part of a unit (along with his brother, The Beatings ' drummer Dennis Grabowski, who also plays guitar with LMD), that aids and abets E.R. [...]

A teraz do [...]

American festivals are more popular than ever, with record sellouts happening across the board. Unfortunately, in 2011, the lineups of the major players are more indistinguishable than ever, thanks to a shallow pool of available headliner options and an endless regurgitation of The Black Keys, Crystal Castles, et al, with surprises and unique bookings in short supply. Especially grievous is the total absence of Pulp. The Britpop legends might be the reunion of the decade, but are currently nowhere to be seen on American shores. Thankfully, there are more attractive alternatives in Europe for the seasoned festival attendee, with the [...]

Frank Yang Okay, so that's the touristy stuff out of the way. Let's get down to business, which is to say the music. As in festival. Music festival. While Primavera Sound's main, three-day event would be cramming Barcelona's Parc del Forum waterfront park to the gills with music until the wee hours of Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, the festival was also bookended by shows at a hillside venue on the other side of the city. El Poble Espanyol is a traditionally-styled Spanish village/museum that also happens to make a fantastic [...]
