Complete with costume changes, set pieces, balloons, and clowns, Of Montreal played one hell of a rock show.

Photos and words by Brandon Winters A sold out crowd at the Echoplex adorned in feathers, face paint, eclectic jewelry, and clashing garb shouted in excitement as of Montreal took the stage. A high energy opening by Houston's Wild Moccasins helped set the tone with their bubbly, infectious rock style and jams. Balloon animals and objects already floated across the crowd from a girl in the front row prior to the show, but these humble creations were soon met with wacky balloons brought by of Montreal's crazy clowns that danced onto the stage during the second song. Kurt Vile took the stage Tuesday night at the jam-packed Echoplex looking as if he just walked out of his "Never Run Away" video — maybe his all-white persona is here to stay. As he did at Coachella , Vile delivered his songs from beneath his voluminous hair, keeping it low-key and letting the music, rather than the guitarist himself, connect with the audience. His backing band the Violators ebbed on and off the stage throughout the night, giving Vile a chance to also show off some of his acoustic versions of his hits. When left [...]

Photos by Debi Del Grande "I got my headphones on, do you?" a sign read as Little Boots (aka Victoria Christina Hesketh) went over and borrowed the holder of said sign's headphones for a bit. Despite technical difficulties, Little Boots forged on with beats from her latest Nocturnes as fans danced the night away at The Echoplex as Brit Week continued. She mentioned she will be back in September. Get your glows ready. Hot female openers Feathers did not disappoint as no-holds-barred Avan Lava poured its sexiness on the crowd. [...]

I don't recall the exact moment I fell in love with GTA's music, but I do have a pretty good idea how it happened. There's no doubt in my mind it was during a set, amidst a crowd of crazy, sweaty people at a show where I got lost in a song that made my booty bounce.... quite possibly every girl's booty there. That's right, if you didn't guess it "Booty Bounce," is where my love for these two Miami based producers originates from. This however, was only the beginning. If you haven't checked out their Soundcloud, I [...]

Photos and words by Scott Sheff Empty cans of PBR, stage diving and a little nudity were just part of the festivities on-hand at The Echoplex as Canadian Mac DeMarco and his irreverent blend of indie rock took the stage—and the crowd—by storm. From start to finish, DeMarco and company kept the energy high as they thrashed and shredded their way through songs from DeMarco's first two albums, Rock ‘n Roll Nightclub and Mac Demarco 2 . In addition to his own tunes, DeMarco ripped through a fast-paced medley of covers, ranging from [...]
French DJ/producer gives us clues about an upcoming album project.

Photos and words by Debi Del Grande If you like your punk dark and in-your-face, than you were probably at The Echoplex catching the brief, but intense Iceage show. Pop punk, they are not. This set was around 35-40 minutes, actually much longer than the previous set at The Echo. The Danish group's latest album You're Nothing might have helped. Singer Elias Bender Rønnenfelt apologized to the crowd for having the barricade between them, but still jumped into the raised hands. [...]

Photos and words by Scott Sheff Jamie Lidell worked his magic behind a futuristic-looking, metallic DJ booth, hiding his gear from sight of the audience and making for a clean stage presence. Sporting a knee-length trench coat throughout the night, Jamie rotated from behind the booth to the front of the stage to groove with the crowd, demonstrating his talent as a performer as much as a musician. With his latest self-titled album, the British techno artist went back to his roots as a solo performer and wowed a sold out crowd at The Echoplex with [...]

"Hype for an artist can be generated from different media outlets and will always have different outcomes for that said artist. Certain times, when the spotlight is seemingly on only one artist, that act will fall short and usually go by the way side. However, other times, that one highlighted act rises from the uncertainty and leaves those doubters in the dust. On Tuesday night at The Echoplex in Silverlake, the sold out crowd may have witnessed one of those special artists in Flume. Warming the audience up for Flume was Jean-Baptiste de Laubier aka Para One. The [...]

Photos and words by Leslie Kalohi Even though the members of Chelsea Light Moving had yet to play a single note, just the sight of the band sound-checking made fans at the Echoplex giddy. Already a runaway favorite of this year’s SXSW Music Festival, Thurston Moore’s new endeavor as CLM only solidified he could do no wrong. As I watched him attack his battered guitar with boyish aplomb, I easily got swept away. So much so, I almost forgot where I was! The heavily textured and complex waves of sound, with unexpected [...]

Photos and words by Melissa Moore If you were lucky enough to get to Austin this past week for SXSW, you know that The Thermals were getting all the attention. I remember watching the Portland trio a few FYF's ago, pogoing on stage to the catchy punk tunes. Thankfully, Desperate Ground the new album from the band's new label Saddle Creek, is more sneering fun. If you were at The Echoplex last night, I hope you survived lead singer and guitarist Hutch Harris' dive into the crowd - how he managed to still play [...]
