Twin Sister, By Kenny McMurtrie By Kenny McMurtrie Keen as mustard to be on stage for the capacity crowd here tonight Twin Sister delivered note perfect renderings of such numbers as ‘Champy’ and set closer ‘All Around And Away We Go’, along with a couple (including the encore) of duets between just Andrea (looking a tad over-dressed for the event) and Eric. Undoubtedly a nice bunch, their music comes across well in a live setting but one couldn’t help but feel that it would be even better appreciated [...]

The amount of new music that we hear nowadays is getting harder and harder to keep up with. Yesterday, I got wind of a Edinburgh based group called Pet . While doing some research on them, I couldn't find much info besides their tumblr and bandcamp page. We like their sound a lot and will feature more tracks from them as we get them. Enjoy their video for Middle Child Syndrome below.

James Vincent McMorrow has come a long way this year since his UK TV debut on Later... with Jools Holland in May of this year. There's been the critical acclaim and he's just completed a headlining tour of the US and Canada. Clearly in a touring mood, he's now in the midst of a UK/European tour. Tonight, he's stopping by the absolutely stunning Queen's Hall in Edinburgh. There's a good crowd in the intimate venue, with tables set out in front of the stage. The remainder of the audience are housed in the [...]

So, this week ends with a massive extravaganza of Toadliness, but it does look like it'll be relatively quiet along the way as there doesn't seem to be that much else around until the weekend. Which is actually alright, sort of, because it gives me a chance to get my shit together in advance of a very busy weekend indeed. Quite how we're going to sort the logistics of getting half the bands in Edinburgh to and from Anstruther on Sunday I don't know, but I am sure we'll manage somehow. Anyhow, in the meantime there [...]

British Sea Power, by Kenny McMurtrie By Kenny McMurtrie October 30, 2011 Rarely do you see a merchandise stall featuring a memoir of the headline act and the family of a couple of its members but, if you’re to come across that anywhere, then a British Sea Power show is probably one of the less surprising places to encounter the like. Alongside the more run of the mill CDs and t-shirts, Ray Wilkinson’s (ex-manager, brother of Yan & Hamilton) work Do It For Your Mum [...]

DZ Deathrays, by Kenny McMurtrie By Kenny McMurtrie October 21, 2011 For those about to mosh … This pair tore things up tonight – a more mobile frontman I’ve yet to witness in Sneaky’s and getting an un-blurred pic of the drummer was no mean feat yet the audience barely scraped into double figures. Given the accolades garnered in this country following DZ Deathrays' previous UK jaunt you’d expect them to be better known so maybe it was a lack of promotion or airplay or whatever. [...]

Well well well, this was really rather excellent. I went along to an absolutely rammed Third Door last night (you know, that place which used to be Medina, but now has a brand spanking new soundsystem, which is excellent news for Edinburgh gig-goers) for an absolutely cracking three-band bill, and a forceful reminder that I have been rather neglecting Jeffrey Lewis for the last couple of years. Viking Moses - I am really pleased Viking Moses rather randomly turned up on this bill, because he was absolutely excellent at [...]

The Travelling Band, by Julia Stryj By Julia Stryj October 20, 2011 Julia Stryj was at the Electic Circus in Edinburgh last week to capture The Travelling Band 's headline show, supported by Jonnie Common and The Imagineers . Read Steve McGillivray's review of the gig here . [...]

The Travelling Band, by Julia Stryj By Steve McGillivray October 20, 2011 Tonight the rush hour traffic in Edinburgh isn't so bad. I manage to cross town from my work to the main train station in the city, Waverley, with a minimum of fuss. The night is not the most pleasant of the year, absolutely tipping down with freezing rain and generally being very Scottish i.e. damp and cold. I'm off to Electric Circus, which is so close to the train station, it feels like an extension. There [...]

Young Knives, by Kenny McMurtrie By Kenny McMurtrie October 23, 2011 Hands down winners in the ordinary bloke stakes, Loughborough’s finest export/escapees Young Knives delivered a thoroughly unpretentious and entertaining end to the weekend tonight. Having been the biggest happening since the launch of Sputnik in Leslie, Fife (pop. 3,100) the night before and with the charms of Wakefield ahead it seems pretty safe to say that they’re not following a conventional tour pattern in promoting Ornaments From The Silver Arcade. Would you though [...]

If you get this in time, then turn off the internet and scarper down to the Queen's Hall right now, as they will be screening the Sigur Ros movie INNI tonight, starting at 19:30, with live performances by Meursault and Withered Hand immediately afterwards. And as for the rest of the week's gig round-up, it's actually quite an eclectic one this week, with noise, classical and antifolk on the calendar, all within a few days of one another. But enough chit-chat, I need to shower and get out the door quick-smart or I shall miss the [...]

“Hey Jane” recorded at the Royal Albert Hall, October 11th 2011 A couple of weeks ago Spiritualized visited the Queen’s Hall in Edinburgh, ready to promote a new album already delayed until next spring. Most of the scheduled tour dates have been postponed until March, but us Scots were lucky to avoid such a fate. [...]

Mazes By Steve McGillivray October 5, 2011 Seems I'm always going to Sneaky Pete's these days. This is not a bad thing by any stretch of the imagination. Sure it's small and an odd shape, making viewing the bands difficult at times, but it's just a damn good place to be for live music. Tonight's aural feast features Glasgow-based band PAWS , Manchester's Milk Maid and Mazes ,who formed in Manchester. Safe to say this is a line up I'm pretty excited about. [...]

The above photo is of the Palm House in Edinburgh's Botanic Gardens, and was taken and passed on to me by Dylan, of Blueback Hotrod legend. And given that the weather outside is all kinds of shit I thought there would be a sort of bitter irony in using it today. See - that's how nice Edinburgh can be, so what the fuck is this pissing rain all about? Anyhow, traditional British whingeing aside, it's going to be a pretty bloody mental week this week. Thursday is going to be a particular swine, what with the awesome David [...]
In the last of his Tangled Tour blogs, Bastions bassist Gareth Davies investigates what you can find hidden in pub basements, and the curious culinary options of northern England. I’ll begin by apologising for tardiness of what is now my final update due to tech problems/spending hours on end in a van/partying. I’ll get into all [...]

Chapel Club, by Kenny McMurtrie By Kenny McMurtrie October 11, 2011 Quite a night for seconds this – only Chapel Club ’s second time in the city, the second time they’ve played their new songs and their time on stage was split into two, albeit loosely. This last fact though was, along with some beer-on-electrics related volume issues, a minor sore point with some in the audience. Punters expect to recognise what they’ve paid to hear, at least within the first couple of numbers after a band [...]
John Knox Sex Club By Steve McGillivray October 1, 2011 If there's one thing I like it's a good gig in a crumby venue. You can keep your arena's and flash auditoriums - I like my venues on the other side of shabby. The place I'm heading for tonight fits the bill nicely. Henry's may sit in the financial district of Edinburgh, but there's nothing flash about it. After driving around for ten minutes to find a space, I reacquainted myself with the venue and found it to [...]

So here were are once again on another distinctly mediocre morning in one of the most utterly unremarkable months of the calender. I was born in November and at least November is pretty reliably completely shit, whereas October doesn't seem to know what it wants to be. It's not even consistently rubbish enough to hate. So far so fucking splendid. I have been driven away from Facebook today by an over-abundance (i.e. one person) of grown fucking adults talking in fucking babyspeak. "U cud of come 2 [insert name of some shit club or other]." Dear [...]
