Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros have covered John Denver, in situations where you want to speak with confidence on covers it helps if you have knowledge of the artist covered, but alas mine is incredibly limited. I like this cut though, it has a sort of cinematic scope and is so willfully contra modern musical trends that you at the very least have to admire it. I also like the restlessness of it. This track sounds tireless and frenetic, especially towards the crescendo which grabs you by the neck as if you haven't [...]
Once aflame with inspiration, there's little refuting The Flaming Lips having burned out somewhere or other along the Vein Of Stars they once so ebulliently floated on down some time around 2009, and Embryonic . The record represented something of a spontaneous combustion in kind: it lacked the engrossing cerebral themes adorably childishly articulated on At War With The Mystics and so too the mystifying brilliance of Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots , The Soft Bulletin and the majority of their antecedent releases – the sanity-obliterating, ramshackle surround sounds of Zaireeka [...]

Throughout the early part of the aughts Devendra Banhart was best known as the face of the of "freak-folk" movement, thanks in part to the fact that he looked as if he had stepped straight out of the Haight circa 1967. I'm not sure it gets much better than this. It's just Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros performing an all acoustic version of " Man On Fire " while riding on horse and carriage through the French Quarter in New Orleans on Bourbon Street. Yeah, I'm just as shocked as you that Alex and the couple dozen members of the band can all fit on the carriage also, but the end result shouldn't surprise you in the least considering what we've come to expect from Edward and crew. And yes I realize that [...]

With five consecutive days of work looming, it helps to find something that let's you know, "You are going to be okay. Life is pretty damn beautiful". Today I found that in the form of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros recently released Bloody Sunday Session version of their song Man on Fire . The video features the entire band being carted around the streets of New Orleans singing a lovely, stripped-down [...]

If Valerie June had been a roots artist in America 80 years ago, and she often sings as if she was, she might have been a principle influence on today’s myriad retro troubadours, hers a stunningly emotive amalgamation of blues, folk, gospel, soul, Appalachian and bluegrass (including irresistible banjo). She exists, however, today, an artist as modern as an iPod Shuffle, a musician for the generation which carries the entire history of recorded music so casually inside its phone. Like a potent distillation bubbling on a Prohibition-era porch, Valerie June makes self-styled “organic moonshine roots music”, music for [...]
