![[Listen] Church- Either Or](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4708398_lg.jpg)
by Tiana Feng Last March we introduced you to Church , but the band now has a full album out on Bandcamp. Unlike the earlier EP, the album consists of new material constructed by all four members. In 8 songs, some pack a bunch, others explore atmospheric folk territory tied together by their fuzzy vocal style. Either Or by Church

Now Playing: Elliott Smith - either/or #vinylsunday

Like clock work, Kill Rock Stars' "Elliott Smith Month" continues with the released of an alternate version of "Ballad of Big Nothing", also off of Either/Or just like "Alameda" , "Punch and Judy" , and "Angeles" . The sound of this track is quite similar to the studio release but listen closely for alternate lyrics peppered throughout. Ballad of Big Nothing (alternate version) by Elliott Smith

Another week in August means that we get another track from Kill Rock Stars "Elliott Smith Month" release. Last week was Punch & Judy and before that was "Alameda" . Where the other "Alternate Versions" could justifiably be called such, this version of "Angeles" is more of a demo as it's completely stripped down and has Smith stating at the end "that was called Angeles", leading us to believe that it may have been a pre- Either/Or demo. Listen to the studio version below and see for yourself how intimate this version is in [...]

Photo by Autumn De Wilde This week Elliott Smith would have turned 43 had his junkie girlfriend not stabbed him and framed it as suicide (word to Disco Vietnam) . Those are the rumors that float around Silverlake and whether you believe them or not, it doesn't alter the fact that the most gifted songwriter of his generation was done in by a dagger nine years ago. The knife hit him straight in the heart, a bit of detail too poetic to be fiction. Same with the horse addiction. Elliott Smith's music [...]

Punch and Judy (alternate version) by Elliott Smith The alternate version of "Punch and Judy" is Kill Rock Star's second taste of alternate versions of Smith's work in honor of what would be the singer's 43rd birthday. In contrast to our first helping, an alternate version of "Alameda," this version of "Punch and Judy" seems about as far from the album version as possible. The sheen and slowed down surfy guitar (a seemingly lackadaisical descendent of "Kiwi Maddog 20/20") is replaced with an anxious riff which [...]

Last week we got to hear an alternate version of "Alameda" in celebration of Smith's birthday which would have been on Monday. And now as promised Kill Rock Stars has released another new track this week, once again it's off if Smith's acclaimed album Either/Or . The original version is definitely a somber affair in comparison to this new, alternate version which picks up the tempo and adds some nice single string guitar flare to the intro and verse. Later in the month, Kill Rock Stars be reissuing Either/Or [...]

Girls with pixie cuts and boys who still smoke Virginia Slims have made me acutely aware of Portland musician, Elliott Smith. I have since been a moderate fan, so I was excited to hear the first of several unreleased tracks that his past label, the unfortunately named Kill Rock Stars, is set to release. First up to bat is an alternate version of “Alameda,” which was originally released on 1997’s Either/Or . While I wholehearted agree that Smith was amazing talent and a truly wonderful singer and songwriter whose death was [...]

Each year Elliott Smith's birthday sneaks up on me although I don't know exactly how considering that mine and Fred's birthdays are also this week. But it never fails that when this time of year rolls around we are usually graced with some kind of rare, unreleased track from the catacombs of the Smith catalog. This year it's an alternate version to "Alameda" from Smith's 1997 album Either/Or . This is supposed to be the first installment in a series that Kill Rock Stars will be putting out in celebration of Smith's 43rd birthday which was on Monday. [...]

The latest of these is an alternate version of "Alameda" from 1997's Either/Or , the first album I bought by Smith and still my favorite in his catalog. [...]

If you were around in 1997 and old enough to comprehend the magnatude of that year's musical releases, you'll remember Elliott Smith 's third album Either/Or being up there along with the likes of Ok Computer, Mezzanine, Homework, Ladies And Gentleman We Are Floating In Space, Time Out Of Mind ...and countless others. That's a bumper year, right there. Awnywhoo, on August 6th it would've been Elliott Smith 's 43rd birthday and in celebration of that occasion the label who used [...]

What's up, kids? Today: not so melancholy for me, what with spring break and all, but because I know so many of you are not so lucky, this one goes out to you. Hope you make it through the day! 1. Artur Rubinstein: Frederic Chopin's Nocturne #7 In C# Minor, Op. 27, CT 114 ("The Chopin Collection: The Nocturnes," 1967) 2. The Byrds: Everybody's Been Burned ("Younger Than Yesterday," 1967) 3. John In The Morning always keeps me in the loop on musician birthdays and anniversary deaths (see: David Bowie ), and today was no different. Seven years ago today (10/21), the great Elliott Smith took his own life (or so the story goes). He's considered to be one of the great solo songwriters of our generation. What-you didn't know that? . I had only casual knowledge of Smith and his music back in the 90s. I wasn't cognizant of his sound and style until he received [...]
Husband&Wife have a new album out, called Proud Flesh , and it's quite easily their strongest album yet. Husband&Wife began planning Proud Flesh several years ago, while they were working on Dark Dark Woods . Wanting to release a downbeat rock album first, they recorded Dark Dark Woods , and kept the upbeat songs for their follow-up. As a result, these songs are seasoned and well thought out. Last night Husband&Wife celebrated their [...]

Hey boys and girls, going to be near Bloomington this weekend? Well then you should head to XRA Fest ! Listening to Either/Or for the first time while walking through a rare Parisian snowstorm solidified Elliott Smith as one of Musset's musical guides.

Bloomington's Husband&Wife are working on their next album due out within the next few months. The band has posted two songs for a limited time as a free download. Promoted as a "zero inch" , side A of the digital single is a demo of Don't Stop , with a remix of I Got Fat on side B (originally on Dark Dark Woods ), remixed by Matt Coleman . Their upcoming full-length album has [...]

OK, it's time for me to take off my Humor Hat and put on my Morose Mittens. Today would have been the 40th birthday of one Elliott Smith, who, as you probably know, died about six years ago under rather hazy circumstances. I don't have terribly much to say, of course, but I just thought I'd make a post to honor one of the most fantastic singer-songwriters of late. It could have been truly remarkable to see what he would have come up with next. Or now. Or in the future. So it's been said before, but again, [...]

Lily Rose Beatrice Allen (born 2 May 1985) is an English singer-songwriter. Best known for her songs "Smile", "LDN", "Oh My God", "The Fear" and their Mockney style, Allen is the daughter of actor/musician Keith Allen and film producer Alison Owen. Allen also hosts her own BBC Three talk show Lily Allen and Friends. From her record released yesterday entitled It's Not Me, It's You , here's a Lily Allen track that reminds of Johnny Cash: surely it's in the guitar. Not something you commonly see from British artists, of [...]
