Here's the first full trailer for HBO's Game Change - Jay Roach's small screen adaptation of John Heilemann and Mark Halperin's book about John McCain's 2008 presidential campaign. The political drama stars Ed Harris as John McCain, Julianne Moore as Sarah Palin, and Woody Harrelson as campaign strategist Steve Schmidt. It'll air March 10th, at 9p.m. on HBO. Even played by Julianne Moore, I still want to punch Sarah Palin in the face. You betcha! What a strange fucking moment we'll remember the Sarah Palin-era in American politics. It still makes no sense, despite [...]
Last Thursday, Badass Digest's Devin Faraci made the observation that the GOP debates have lasted longer that the television runs for Freaks & Geeks, Firefly, and Arrested Development . It was a pretty funny and clever observation. Is it a coincidence, or suspicious that Mediate's Philip Bump then made the same observation without crediting Faraci the next day? I get that there's very little original content on the Internet, but best practice dictates giving a shout-out to the place you find content or the place that inspires a [...]
GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney finally released his tax returns for 2010 and 2011. It's not remotely surprising that he paid an effective tax rate of just 14% on $43 million dollars because all of that income was from capital gains. It's also not surprising that he has bank accounts in Switzerland and the Cayman Islands, places that are nothing but tax shelters for the wealthy. The tax code is not his fault. That he paid just 14% in taxes speaks to how broken the tax system is in America and less about what kind [...]
President Obama was at Harlem's Apollo Theater and briefly broke into a rendition of Al Green's "Let's Stay Together." He covers the tune admirably and I wish he did so for a bit longer. It's pretty clear that Obama is just cool. He has a way about him and it's going to be impossible for Mittens to knock him off in November. Sorry, even with an economy in the shitter, it's just not going to happen. Romney looks wooden and awful next to the other Republican candidates. Next to Obama, he looks like a clumsy middle school [...]
Stephen Colbert's Super PAC, Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow , has released its first ad to air in South Carolina going after Mitt "The Ripper" Romney. It's nicely narrated by Jon Lithgow. Even though this is partly in jest, it's pretty brilliant. Imagine if this commercial came from the Ron Paul camp? [via SFB ]

"Wit suggests an agile mind, which is useful for a president who needs to cut through complex subjects, rally people to a cause, or break the tension in negotiations. Given the polarization in Washington at the moment, perhaps wit is required more than ever." - Joan Dickerson , astutely observing that none of the Republican presidential candidates are funny. It's not that you need to be funny to be a politicians, far from it, but humor helps cut through the white noise, the constant hum that voters eventual tune out over time.
Kelly Clarkson appears to have switched sides, announcing that she loves Ron Paul . And then, after discovering that it wasn't a popular idea, trying to sort-of-half-endorse him: "I do not support racism. I support gay rights, straight rights, women's rights, men's rights, white/black/purple/orange rights. I like Ron Paul because he believes in less government and letting the people (all of us) make the decisions and mold our country. That is all. Out of all of the Republican nominees, he's my favorite." Aw, yes - who cares about the racism and the homophobia [...]

We all love lists, and we all love sarcasm. Though, I think its important to reflect upon the last year of music, I'm going to do so through the use of a list. It was a fantastic year full of awesome albums, and I'm going to count down a bunch of my favorites, and give you something to listen to while reading. 35. The Elected - Bury Me in My Rings The Elected - Go For The Throat Blake Sennett (Rilo Kiley), made his way back into music with [...]
And the appropriate response to his answer is of course: Has the Cain Train official run off the tracks? How is it that we take this guy, Bachmann and Perry as serious candidates for the president, but someone like Ron Paul is completely marginalized? Sometimes the GOP voter base just baffles me.
Suzanna Andrews profiles Elizabeth Warren for Vanity Fair : Born and raised in Oklahoma, Elizabeth Herring spent most of her early life performing all the good-girl Stations of the Cross. She won the Betty Crocker competitions, married for the first time at 19, had two children before she was 30, and was once a registered Republican. She was the youngest of four children and the only daughter. Her father worked as a janitor, and her mother brought in extra money working in the catalogue-order department at Sears. Warren would recall her mother hesitating to take her [...]

Blake Sennett drops a new visual for his latest LP's stand out track.
Filed under: New Music , Exclusive , RPM Lauren Dukoff As Jimmy Tamborello proves with his remix of the Elected 's 'Babyface,' an indie-pop track can easily be transformed into something that might have ended up on the ' Scarface ' soundtrack. After stripping away the major-key guitar lines and giving the song a downtempo groove, the electro artist, DJ and Postal Service producer took Elected frontman Blake Sennett right [...]

[ download ] [tweetmeme] One of my current favorite things about the weekend is that the local oldies station in my neck of the woods has taken to playing random episodes of America's Top 40 with Casey Kasem on Sunday mornings. One week listeners might be treated to an episode from May of 1984, then the next week it's August of 1973. It's a great reminder of the old days back when AM radio was king and the Billboard Top 40 reflected the mindset of the teenagers of the nation. [...]
