The midwest regional is starting here at Indy tonight. I need to scrape up some tickets badly. I love march madness! Next to the NFL playoffs, this is my favorite sporting event of the year. The teams have to play their hardest or the season's over. Speaking of which, the last Indiana team, Purdue was beat by UConn last night. The other team, small Indy college upstart Butler [...]
I felt a little guilty posting about something as trivial as a footballers collapsed transfer on a day when the whole world was tuning in to see a change in the Leader of The Free World. The truth is I wanted to let the news sink in a little and see how events unfolded [...]

Matt at Unlikely Words has created a time capsule of sorts for the 2008 election . He's rounded up just about everything dating back to the speculation of who would even run for the presidency. It's pretty impressive. I wanted to create something to look at a couple years from now to remember the election and hopefully present a good representation of what both sides of America were feeling on that day as evidenced by the response in the press and on the blogs . I didn’t capture everything, though [...]

What he said: What a looney. "Fundamentally sinful?" Who uses that term anymore? What a dimwit! What she said: That's more like it.
Interesting regression analysis by Nate Silver over at 538. He's predicting that once the Minnesota recount is completed that Al Franken will beat Norm Coleman by 27 votes. Nate was right just about every single time throughout the Democratic primaries and again during the presidential race. Interesting to see if this shakes out. If it does there is no telling how high his stock will rise as a political analysis. [ fivethirtyeight.com ]
Perhaps one of the most fascinating things I've read in a few weeks. "This is not a political blog. However, this is a story I couldn't pass up: the story of how voting patterns in the 2008 election were essentially determined 85 million years ago, in the Cretaceous Period. It's also a story about how soil science relates to political science, by way of historical chance." There are also maps involved. Lots of maps. The convergence of history, geography and politics - what more could you want? [ Vigorous North via Kottke ]
Jackson Browne's complaints against John McCain using his music during the McCain-Whatwashernamegain campaign have finally drawn a formal legal response from John McCain. McCain claims that Browne was only making a fuss to draw attention to his new album, and then suggests that he can do whatever he wants with whoever's music he chooses as he was running for President. Who knew after all these years of Republicans happy to extend copyright in any way, shape or direction we'd finally find some sort of fair use that a GOP guy would fight for? Still, [...]

I can't believe that Simon Cowell took his reality show posse out to the studio one day and decided to turn Mariah's classic about personal perseverance and possibly a plight to shun suicidal thoughts into a cesspool of monotony about non-drafted soldiers getting back home. On top of all of that, this piece of garbáge has been on the #1 spot for 3 weeks now. Mariah's original went to #7 in the UK charts back in November 1993. Click to see it after the jump... According to Wiki: Barack Obama's [...]

On the morning of Wednesday, November 5, I awoke with feelings of hope, renewal and pride unlike anything I'd experienced in.. well, at least eight years. On the heels of four days spent knocking on doors; reminding voters in Madison, Wisconsin, to get out the vote; I remained physically and emotionally exhausted, but knowing that our nation had elected its first ever African American president quickly made the pain of aching feet dissipate. My elation at Barack Obama's victory was quickly squelched by the news from California that a slim majority of that state's voters had chosen [...]
The real world just marches in sometimes, commanding a clear domination of one's free time. As I do love my site, it's a ton of work and the day job has been barking louder. Filling the void since my last post has been the happy surprise of the election turnout in Obama's favor. I had some faith that things would swing this way, but given the state of the world for the past 8 years, I also had my questions. After the results came in, I found myself driving around L.A. listening to "Old Old [...]
You may remember a couple of months back that excellent blog The Sound of Indie decided to hold a recording of Dean & Britta's Galaxie 500 show at the Zipper Factory hostage to prevent Howard Wolfson, pundit for the vile media outlet Fox News, getting his paws on it. The recording would be kept locked up until the outcome of the election proved that despite Fox News' finest efforts, the US voters were ready to embrace change. Today The Sound of Indie kept its promise and has made available the entire [...]
Madonna has muttered something about how terrible it is that Proposition 8 - the Mormon-funded ban on gay marriage in California - has passed. Rather than the applause she was expecting , the reaction has been a little cool. Not least, people are wondering why she waited to say anything until after the election, rather than adding her weight to the 'No' campaign before the elections. Like, for example, when she played in San Francisco last Sunday. E!'s Marc Malkin asked her representatives why she didn't say anything before: Asked about Madonna's noninvolvement with Prop [...]

SomaCow Media is proud to present SomaCow , brought to you in this hour by BloodHoundGang.Com - They're bonzer, and we're thrilled to be able to bring you a taste of their music here on the 'Cow - So, in this hour, we recapped a bit of the election (we promise not to bore - lord knows there was enough coverage, discussion, and politicking already). We're happy to be done with it, and moving on to our favorite topics, food, the bathroom, and chicks. [...]

A little late on this. You'll have to forgive me. But on election night, Obama for America campaign photographer David Katz shot some wonderful behind the scenes photos of Barack Obama , Joe Biden and their families watching the election results come in from their hotel room in Chicago. The Big Picture also has some amazing photos of Obama on the campaign trail . It's hard not to crystalize that night, that singular moment in time for what it was. [...]
Britta has just put her election diary on the Dean & Britta MySpace blog ... As we were approaching NYC at around 10:30p.m., we heard on the radio that the crowd in Times Square was getting really huge so we drove straight there. It was pretty cool, but people were still holding their breath waiting for the final results. We were all tired, so I dropped the guys off and headed home to the east village. A minute later, they called it for Obama. When I got back home to the east village, there was [...]
Following on from the Mormon church buying a slice of repression in California, Melissa Etheridge has decided that if the state doesn't recognise her love , she won't recongise its demands for taxation: So Prop 8 passed. Alright, I get it. 51% of you think that I am a second class citizen. Alright then. So my wife, uh I mean, roommate? Girlfriend? Special lady friend? You are gonna have to help me here because I am not sure what to call her now. Anyways, she and I are not allowed the same right under the state constitution [...]

Tuesday was a great night. So much so that my computer basically said I'm done with you when I woke up Wednesday morning. Something about a hal.dll file being corrupted. Anyway, once Jesse Jackson started crying and then Oprah, the floodgates opened. For real. It was like the great flood when he promised his two daughters a new puppy. Damn you Obama for going the new puppy route! And forcing me to hide my man tears in front of so many people. The truth is though, the stories that fascinate me the most about [...]

I love this quote from Oprah Winfrey. It just sums up everything I'm thinking.
