Although it's never been documented as an official movement in music, the past few years have seen several country-influenced bands eschew their rustic overtones and twang for less jammy, more pop-oriented songs. Ryan Adams, Wilco, the list goes on. While Rilo Kiley was never considered a proper country band, or even a proper alternative country band, their earlier folk aesthetic had all but disappeared on 20072s Under the Blacklight , a record filled with bouncing coke rock gems reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac. It only makes sense that Blake Sennett's indie pop outfit The Elected would [...]

Really loving the new album from The Elected Bury Me In Rings album so far and "Go for the Throat" is definitely an early favorite. Blake Sennett just has a knack for writing great pop songs. The record hits stores next week, but you can pre-order the album on iTunes to get the bonus track "Some People". Mp3: The Elected - Go For The Throat
Blake Sennett of Rilo Kiley will be heading out on a US run with his solo-project, The Elected . The Los Angeles guitarist is set to hit NYC's Mercury Lounge on Tuesday, May 24th
Last month, our own Dan Caffrey spoke with Blake Sennett , who in addition to relating Rilo Kiley to a corpse in a morgue, he stressed how his new music could have possibly healed some wounds. Now, he's ready to take those therapeutic melodies on the road, as he and The Elected will patrol across North America this summer. In support of their latest effort, Bury Me In My Rings , due out May 17th via Vagrant Records, The Elected will hit up a variety of markets. Outside previously announced dates in both NYC and L.A., [...]

Rumor has it that at this time last year, Blake Sennett had effectively walked away from the music biz, no small feat for a man who anchored Rilo Kiley as well as fronted his own well-received pop project, The Elected. But, here was Sennett, writing and directing a short film while palling around town with a rescue dog known only as “The Baby.” Enter Sennett's pal, Jason Cupp, or as he is known in some circles, that guy who mixed The Elected’s previous record, Sun, Sun, Sun [...]
In Rilo Kiley it's Jenny Lewis that gets most of the attention. There's another force in the band writing songs as well though. That's Blake Sennett, and he gets another opportunity to shine on his own with the release of Bury Me In My Rings, the new album from his project The Elected (out May 17th). There's nothing that's grips you instantly on the album, "Babyface" comes the closest. For the

Dear fellow Canadians, Today is the day that you need to get out and exercise your right to help make sure that guys like Stephen Harper do not remain the soul in charge of running your country and the face representing it around the world. That photo op with Nickleback is just the tip of the iceberg; this man robot is capable of —and responsible for— much worse . Voter apathy is the ace up the Conservatives sleeve, so get out there and vote. Even if you have not done any homework as to which [...]

A friendly reminder for all Canadians of voting age. bingofuel : Non-celebrities want you to vote… for anyone but Harper.

Blake Sennett is a Californian musician in every sense of the word. His work in indie pop outfits Rilo Kiley and The Elected has often been compared to the sunny stylings of fellow Golden State brethren such as Fleetwood Mac and Jackson Browne (who guest-starred on Rilo Kiley's last album - 20072s Under the Blacklight ). Bury Me In My Rings , his stellar upcoming third record with The Elected (recorded with Rilo Kiley drummer Jason Boesel and a handful of other musicians), is a collection of 12 '60s and '70s flavored gems, a distillation of his sprightly, [...]
Che Smith, aka Rhymefest , forced a runoff election with veteran Chicago pol Willie Cochran in an aldermanic race. But it looks like the rapper and Kanye collaborator fell short Tuesday in his bid to upset Cochran for a seat on the city council.

Happy April Fools Day everyone. I'm not nearly crafty enough to pull a April Fools prank on you guys this year. I love you too much. Instead, I've decided to drop my March Mix. Once again, the genius Camilo Bejarano designed the artwork for this months mix, and he's outdone himself, yet again. March was a month that saw a mix of big releases, along with plenty of indie gems. It was an eclectic month of music, and this playlist really speaks toward that notion. There's truly something for everyone here. Maybe a track you missed somewhere, or [...]

I've always been a huge fan of Blake Sennet's guitar work for Rilo Kiley. Although that band performs perpetually in the shadow of the great Jenny Lewis, it's often Blake's ear-catching guitar hooks on songs like "Science Vs. Romance" and "Silver Lining" that elevate the songs above typical indie-rock fare. Sennet's songwriting isn't too shabby either, as evidenced by his albums with his solo group The Elected. Sennet's voice, soft and unassuming, isn't anything to write home about, but his pop chops appear to be as sharp as ever on his third album with his band, Bury Me In [...]

It's been five years since we've heard new music from the Elected, Rilo Kiley guitarist Blake Sennett's indie pop side-project. Bury Me In My Rings , the Elected's third LP, finds Sennett playing most of the instruments and handling production as well. It also marks the former Sub Pop act's first album with Vagrant. Their sound these days is inspired by the breezy jams of the '70s/'80s west coast music scene. The blueprint for "Babyface" specifically seems to be Lindsey Buckingham's first solo album. Check that out, along with the premiere of "Go For The Throat," after the jump. [...]
