FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 11 Noel Gallagher has proven himself to be quite multifaceted. This past month, Gallagher released his self-titled, debut album, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds— which was met with anxious speculation from music critics who expected to hear Oasis-esque pop tunes. Yet, to some people's surprise (and possible dismay) the music veers away from that of the Britpop sensation he was once a part of; the album leans more towards radio rock than the ballad-y pop heard in "Wonderwall." Beirut is often grouped with other bands whose front man has become a synonym for the band itself. Bright Eyes has Conor Oberst, Bon Iver has Justin Vernon, and indie rock outfit Beirut has Zach Condon. Though Beirut started as Condon's personal brainchild, bassist Paul Collins has been a part of the Sante Fe-based group for nearly as long as Condon himself. Asobi Seksu FRIDAY, OCTOBER 28 Asobi Seksu—which means "playful sex" in Japanese—is aptly named. Pairing shoegaze inspired grunge-pop with the dynamic vocals of Yuki Chikudate (who slips effortlessly between falsetto, full-out belting, and simply speaking melodically), the band is edgy, harsh, and brisk, yet cloyingly catchy. (Or, in a phrase: playfully sexy.) Chikudate's lyrics are a mix of English and Japanese, which band mates James Hanna and Larry Gorman have encouraged since the group formed in 2004. J.Cole recently sat down with KarmaloopTV to speak on the success of his debut LP, Cole World: The Sideline Story as well as the industry step-backs that go along with releasing an LP. Cole also addresses his career parallels in relation to Kanye West, his statements on looking to change the game, as well as dropping knowledge on the radio business and at one point wanting to make his sound more "mainstream".
