HI54LOFI Records has a new compilation out to commemorate Valentines Day next week appropriately called 'I Love You & Stuff" but wait, it's soo much more. This isn't just 15 tracks to impress the one you love/like or even not remotely know, you also get the opportunity to actually send them a Valentine card with your "purchase". Come on, you know you want to spread the love and what better way than with music (...says the music blogger). There are some really great tracks on this compilation and [...]

Quick Sunday post for all you looking for some great mellow tunes over coffee. And it is completely free! Found via my twitter feed (I love when others do all the ground work - thanks Leentje!) and I have to say, it is incredibly beautiful to listen to and if possible use headphones. While it is halfway between acoustic folk and shoegaze pop it can find a home with lovers of both. Tracks like "Winter's Wall" that opens the album has a pseudo electro start that yields to a piano/acoustic ballad with a bit of electro pop drumming. [...]
A full stream of a mid-December release from Ghostly International . Though this album's release date will probably keep it from appearing on many year-end lists, Aeroc's R+B=? is surely a must-visit for those into the more glitch'd side of IDM. Some of the percussive sounds here are pretty sharp and abrasive, but the grooves and acoustic arpeggios are smooth, smooth, smooth.
Dam Mantle is the solo effort of Glasgow producer Tom Marshallsay. I caught this track as the 4052s "Track of the Day," and it's not hard to see why. The first and obvious observation to make is that this track is a bit of a departure from the dubstep sounds that littered Mantle's previous release, We . On "Spirit," the choppy, light percussion has been switched out for something smoother and jazzier. The skittering ride cymbals and looped piano chords are a nice addition to the forefront of this track, but try not [...]

I can't really find too much information on Alex Waters , aside from the fact that he hails from Lismore; presumably in Australia, not Scotland. I make that assumption judging by the tranquil, carefree vibes of debut track Wood Smoke , which combines pop and electronic influences into a fascinating acoustically driven number. Comparisons could be drawn to Washed Out through the smooth vocals and languid synths, however the choruses are more contained and less extravagant. It's clearly that Alex Waters is not the complete article yet, although judging by the strength of [...]

A new video from the new collaborative album between electronica producer Jon Hopkins and one of the UK's more prolific singer-songwriters, King Creosote. I wouldn't call myself an expert on either of these musicians, but I knew enough to be kind of surprised by the pairing. Hopkins' and Creosote's creative minds might be closer than I originally assumed, though. On "Bubble," the light electronics complements the songwriting perfectly. They add a nice texture without taking away from the warm, soft, and acoustic nature of the instrumentation. Dig on the video above, and look for this new [...]
It's been awhile since we've mellowed out at Newdust and posted a nice ambient tune. Although technically this song is half ambient, half electro-acoustic, which is probably why I like it so much. Rough Fields is the project name of UK composer James Birchall, which is the perfect culmination of all of [...]
Heading along the same lines as The Shoes with their chilled out, warming and heartfelt lyrical electronica. We have a man who is following a similar path who goes by the name of Woodkid. Electro-acoustic I'd say. There isn't much information about on this Damien Rice-esque vocalist who takes more than a guitar to his [...] Continue..

photography by purpleplaid I've been thinking a lot lately about the local music scene in Toronto and it got me to thinking that while I do check out a lot of bands, I never go blindly searching for new ones. I either go off recommendations from friends, promoters or buzz. So this week I decided to take the Wheel o' Bandcamp through the Toronto tag. As always, these are bands that I know nothing about, nor have every heard before going fishing. There's a great mix here that I think everyone could find something they [...]

Over the past few years or so, I've spent considerable time listening to a lot of electronic/electroacoustic fuzz-drone type stuff, and I've come to realise that much of it fails to sustain an interest beyond the first couple of outings. So I tend to acknowledge the abstraction, occasionally scratch what beard I might have, and then move back to something with a bit of structure and, dare I say it, a bit of melody. What Axxonn (moniker for the Australian artist Tom Hall) achieves is therefore no small feat – he manages to marry the abstract with the tuneful. Often [...]

A few years ago I saw the name of Cem Güney , a Turkish sound artist on the Portuguese Cronica label website. I remember I was pretty intrigued to see a Turkish artist on Crónica, because I didn't know much (or rather any) prominent Turkish sound artist apart from say Erdem Helvacıoğlu (who has a new album with Ros Bandt btw). I acquired the said 2008 album ' Praxis ' a few months ago, and it's a strong one with solid conceptual background as well as nice drones, microsound and musique concrete. Boomkat [...]
Really been getting into Pepepiano's music lately- "Pepepiano is the recording alias of David Bird, a composer of electro-acoustic music from Laguna Beach, California." Electro-acoustic. What does that sound like? Listen for yourself, this song's called bruce springsteen. Download this song a lot more music for free on bandcamp .

#100 can you believe it?. This is a really special mix with layers of ambience, drone, and electroacoustic improv going seamlessly on top of each other. I kind of tried to convey a sense of cinematic narrative. I regret this won't appeal to most of our listeners but if you want to give it a try, headphones are recommended. Hope you like it! I have had Jes Kramer on this blog previously , but I was reminded of Jes due to twitter when she started following me. In all honesty, if I was more aware it would have been me following her first (follow her @Jes_Kramer ). Jes Kramer has always had a place in this sad bastard's heart - a bit of a mellow 'Casiotone' place at that. Well, a favourite of mine is her "Hermaphrodite" album from late 2008 - it's chalk full of quirky, almost fun songs but still almost sad and introspective at the same [...]

Necks pianist Chris Abrahams' Room 40 release Play Scar will most def be on our 2010 toplist, but I didn't want it to go without a post even though it's been months since I've been listening to it. I don't know if it feels the same for everyone, or just me because I'm a lousy writer, but I find writing short blurbs to lesser albums so much easier than writing for more important or even groundbreaking ones such as this one. Thank God there are more responsible who love to tackle albums like this, be [...]
So I can't find any information on the artist responsible for the charming little electro-acoustic tune accompanying this video, and I just can't stop listening to it! Also the video is really sweet as well, it's a showcase of Renault's Z.E. (zero emission) electric concept vehicles that are projected to come out in the not [...]

Frozen Elephants Music one of the finest netlabels around, has pulled the plug. I happened to have their 14th and final release for some time on my harddrive, but frankly couldn't give it a thorough listen. Just when I found the time, I realized that they're gone now. Thanks for all the good music, you can still pay a visit to their archives.
