For The Key’s year-in-review, we asked our trusted sources – our writers and photographers, XPN’s on-air staff, fellow bloggers in the Philly scene and even a few musicians – to send us their Top Five Whatevers. Could be the traditional music route – albums, songs, concerts of the year – or it could be only ... Continue reading

Something different from ST.
Electronic music is designed for use by DJ's. For this reason, electronic releases tend to be singles rather than full albums: for better or for worse. Full cohesive electronic albums are rare and special things. The format of an album supports so much more artistry and creative capacity than singles and EP's ever will. Yet electronic genres like House and Techno are so dominated by singles and EP's. I see a trend emerging; songs which have real lasting power come from brilliant full-length releases. For me, albums like Justice's Cross , Digitalism's Idealism and Daft Punk's [...]

As a founding member of the Glitch Mob, Kraddy helped with the groups early success. He decided to go at it solo with the hit Android Porn and later the full album Labyrinth. The producer stays true to his style on this one, while trying out a ton of new things. Anthems Of The Hero is an electronic album with some classic rock influences. For this album he brought in live drummer and guitarist Jon Theodore and Cody Votolato, together they recorded the guitar and synths onto tape and then ran the samples through Pro Tools to get a unique sound [...]

A few days ago I posted up Paul Basic's The Mirror , which was a great release with 10 well done electronic tracks released on Pretty Lights Music. Well now I've got the release from the other new face to the Pretty Lights Music team, SuperVision. He's got that chilled out swag bass filled Pretty Lights Music style almost almost all the artists on the label have. Well SuperVision definitely has a more low key sound, not getting as bass heavy. But he's got a real unique sampling style. I couldn't decide on a single track, so download [...]

Today I've got the newest Pretty Lights Music label release. We posted the first single off it, a real crunchy bass filled Dream On remix . Well now the entire 8 song release is just as good. It's got some chiller tracks, then some more bass filled ones like. This is an album, not a mixtape. This could be sold, but is given away for free. These are the type of releases why I created the site. This artist, as well as the Pretty Lights Music label understands the potential of giving away free music. Watch Paul Basic blow [...]

Today I've got a very sick feature length free album Dreaming of A Bigger Life from Michal Menert, another artist on the free Pretty Lights Music record label. I've only featured one of his tracks on the Snow Ball mixtape . This release actually came out about a year ago, but for some reason slipped passed getting posted. It's got a real chill mellowed out feel with some real cool unique sampling throughout. It reminds me of some early Pretty Lights, which makes sense considering he helped Co-Produce the first PL album. Check out the whole album, or a [...]

David Lynch plans to release a full electronic music album, and he'll tell the world about it at the International Music Summit keynote speech in Ibiza on May 26 (via Skype from his studio in Los Angeles). Lynch and longtime engineer "Big" Dean Hurley will discuss how the album came about. The filmmaker previously released “Good Day Today” and “I Know” via Radio 1 DJ Rob da Bank’s label, Sunday Best. He's influenced innumerable musicians as well, many of whom told us about their favorite Lynch moments. [...]

Everyone's favourite surrealist filmmaker is releasing his first electronic music album later this year, which he completed yesterday, as was made known through a press release. The date is still TBA but Lynch is addressing his recent work at the Ibiza International Music Summit on 26 May via Skype from his LA studio. I'm going to be in LA that day! Glen and I are off to San Francisco on Monday until the 26th (hopefully will get to scout out some good local bands while we're there), when I will be flying solo to LA on my [...]

Look at Elly's smile! That picture tells a thousand words. I'm so excited for the British pop duo who took the GRAMMY for Best Electronic Album yesterday during the pre-televised ceremony for "In For The Kill." On Friday, I spoke with the duo for Cherrytree TV just after they had received a plaque for selling 2 million copies of that album. Incredibly impressive and nothing less than a massive victory for electro-pop in the States. (Look for that video interview very soon.)

Deserved? Maybe. Well, at least Goldfrapp's sucky last one didn't get it. Filed under: Beats , Brit Brit Brit
