DJ Tiesto , one of the biggest names in progressive trance, has teamed with Metric 's Emily Haines in an unlikely pairing that is nothing short of perfect. " Knock You Out " can be found on Tiesto's newest album, Kaleidoscope . The album features collaborations with great names from a variety of genres. Bloc Party's Kele Okerere lends Tiesto his vocals as well as international pop star Nelly Furtado . The album is out now. In a turn for Tiesto, "Knock You Out" and a [...]
I'm a sucker for songs with handclaps and even more of a sucker for great use of strings. That's why when I heard Just Jack 's " Embers " on Gossip Girl Monday night [Yes, Gossip Girl . Get over it.] I had to find it. I know I can't be alone. Embers - Just Jack Released in March of 2009, "Embers" has generated some genuine buzz - buzz that I have [...]
I've been getting some flack for only posting "mainstream music" by those who don't understand that I appreciate music as a whole. I must point out that so-called "mainstream" music is most definitely important and influential. And I'm not afraid to admit I genuinely like pop music (when it's done well). I don't have the need to maintain an aura pretentiousness so people will like me. And I do like indie stuff - but only when that's good, too. Just because some guy makes his music on his rented bicycle and isn't signed to a major label doesn't automatically mean [...]
As Bloc Party get further away from their Silent Alarm days, so does their sound. And, not to disparage that album (it's fantastic), I'm glad it has. If they made Silent Alarm again I wouldn't esteem them so. Please excuse the rant, but I feel that all of the "fans" who claim that the band has not been as good/pure since that album aren't fans of the band at all. Bloc Party has produced consistently good and interesting material without ever having to repeat themselves. If [...]
Took me long enough, eh? Above is the cover art for my next mix, The Prey . I admit that the art looks more like a fall album, but I think the subject matter called for it. Its sound? Not so much. Inside the mix you'll find plenty electro-wave and electropop songs to fit into the current musical climate as well as some fantastic pieces that needed to be included for a solid mix. This is why the mix took so long again. Sorry. I could have easily released this mix [...]

The video for the stellar collaboration between Mr. Hudson and Kanye West , " Supernova, " has just been released. Check it out in HQ at On Smash videos or via YouTube below: Here's my original blog post about the track: The fantastic duo that created " Paranoid " off of Kanye West 's brilliant 808's and Heartbreak is back at it; and now it's time for Mr. Hudson 's [...]
I've never really been completely taken by MSTRKRAFT or John Legend. I've liked what they did musically in theory, but I've never been able to truly enjoy one of their tracks. (I also always thought the golden hockey masks kinda creepy.) So my surprise at their collaboration was big, but my expectations weren't very high. It's possible that the low expectations were what made me enjoy this song thoroughly. It's a great blend of the respective artists' styles, MSTRKRFT with their grand [...]
French electropop sensation Yelle and Swedish electropop sensation Robyn have covered/translated each other's songs. They're both good covers. I like Yelle's version of " Who's that Girl? " a lot (only because its one of my least favorite Robyn cuts turned awesome). Robyn's cover is a great mashup of " A Cause de Garcons " and her cover of "Cobrastyle" which is amazing, but I think the translation of the song that might have made it only okay. Here's the Yelle: [...]
It seems like everyone decided to release music videos this week because here I am, back with yet another video premiere. This time it's Kanye West featuring Mr. Hudson, but Hudson is nowhere to be found! Instead we get this lady: Talk about an upgrade. Here's the fantastically pop art video for the 80s laced " Paranoid ": Paranoid - Kanye West feat. Mr. Hudson [...]
The fantastic duo that created " Paranoid " off of Kanye West 's brilliant 808's and Heartbreak is back at it; and now it's time for Mr. Hudson 's album cut featuring West. The song is called " Supernova "; it's a midtempo track with an electronic/80s backing that is entirely delectable. Hudson's vocals remind me of vocals from the hundreds of British new wave groups with a trance twist (it's probably the autotune that made me think trance). Those assertions might not make much sense until you [...]
It's a bit late, but I promised: The monthly mix is back! I've entitled it Let Love Rule after a line in an Alphabeat track early in the mix. The title encompasses its loose theme; it is about the deceptive similarities between love and lust. Cupid is featured on the cover (below) because - aside from the obvious - he is referenced in two tracks of the mix. The painting is called " A Young Girl Defending Herself Against Eros " which, even in title, completely conveys the main conflict that binds together all [...]
The Killers may be releasing a covers album soon, according to Q Magazine . Apparently each band member will choose three tracks for the album. This is great news to me since they've already released some fantastic covers and an album of them would be pretty incredible. Not a day after I announced the name/released the art of my new mix, Let Love Rule , do I find out from our fantastic contributor Ill Papa that Lenny Kravitz's debut album bears the same name. And because it celebrates 20 years since its release this year it is being re-released and remastered. What's more, it will include a remix of its title track by electro wave gods Justice ! So, of course, I have it for you: Let Love Rule 2009 (Justice Remix) - Lenny Kravitz [...]

Ke$ha [Pop Roundup Series Part 10]
Having a number 1 song under her belt is sure to help Ke$ha be a smash. But, she'd still be doing pretty well without it. [It's pronounced K-EH-shah, by the way. Not K-ee-sha like Keisha Cole.] "Who is Ke$ha," you ask? She's that delicious female voice that blasted through your radio every time you jammed out to Flo Rida 's massive 80s rip-off spring hit, " Right Round ". (Stop pretending you didn't jam. You did, you did.) Here's [...]

NEW Shakira – Loba [Pop Roundup Series Part 9]
Shakira has released a new single from her upcoming (still untitled) English language album - in Spanish. The song is called " Loba," or " She Wolf " and it will be an absolute smash. Even though it is an electronic dance track, the song sounds like nothing on the mainstream charts. Typical Shakira. Shakira always manages to keep her sound varied while being very comfortable in her musical skin. "Typical" Shakira is, by definition, entirely atypical. When I pressed play, I thought I had started playing a funky indie electronic song - maybe [...]

Remedy – Little Boots [Pop Roundup Series Part 8]
Little Boots has finally released her much-anticipated album Hands in the UK. (The U.S., as always with awesome music, has to wait.) One of the standout tracks from the album is " Remedy ". It's a giant europop track that will be a massive hit - especially because it's the second single from the album. (The first was the incredible "New In Town" - download it on my mix, Let Love Rule.) Heads off, the BEST music video of 2009. "Heads Will Roll". [Videos/Remixes]
The time has finally come. The love for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' "Zero , " the first single from It's Blitz , has begun to fade; finally giving room to the far superior " Heads Will Roll ". (Readers of this blog might remember this as the bombastic track opening my April Mix, Let Love Rule .) And now, the best music video of the year, heads off: [...]
