[Introducing] – Don Ryan

[Introducing] – Don Ryan Tweet The debut album "Tangle Town" by Don Ryan begins with a sampling of crackling records from perhaps some long ago Tin Pan Alley recording, then shoots into the raucous "This Town" . Specializing in a heady gumbo of experimental Alt-Folk with psychedelic leanings, Ryan conjures a world that has become a sort of deranged, dark circus. Ryan proclaims "this town is burning down" to the tune of handclaps and chimes giving the statement more of a celebratory feel than [...]

Served Three Ways: Three Covers of Elliott Smith's "Between The Bars"

Served Three Ways: Three Covers of Elliott Smith's "Between The Bars" Elliott Smith wrote some of the prettiest pop songs ever written. Of course, writing a pretty pop song isn't the same thing as writing an upbeat pop song. "Between the Bars" is a perfect example. The melody is touchingly beautiful and unthreateningly gentle. The lyrics, however, are undeniably troubled. Although the song could double as an unorthodox love song (a popular interpretation of the track), the most likely read is that it's about the threat of impending alcoholism. As the track opens, Smith sings ruefully about "the potential you'll be, but you'll never see / the promises you'll only make." [...]

Elliott Smith: Lyrical Genius Even in 2012

Elliott Smith: Lyrical Genius Even in 2012 Elliott Smith, for years has captivated me. I seem to pick up a new album (or rather old album now) of his every time I stumble through my apartment. While moving some of my roommate's shit I have found 3 Elliott Smith cd's. Luckily. The curious packaging of his self-titled album and From a Basement on the Hill had me instantly, as I am a stickler for cool marketing ideas and cd package art. I popped the self-title in and I was taken to a place of despair and amazingly descriptive imager y, words cannot describe, literally, what his words [...]

I Got 5 Years Stuck On My Eyes

I Got 5 Years Stuck On My Eyes I got 5 years, what a surprise! ' Five Years ', Bowie's opening track on the Ziggy album ends with that afore-mentioned refrain. But you knew that already. You might also know that Plain Or Pan has now been going for 5 years. Or you might not. Either way, thanks for visiting time and time again. Whether you're one of the few who choose to 'follow this blog' or you're one of those misguided creeps who ended up here via Google after searching for ' Teenage Fanny ' and got the Bellshill Beach Boys instead, those visits [...]

Elliott Smith – Live At Green Street Grill (Video)

Elliott Smith – Live At Green Street Grill (Video) Another Christmas gift it seems has arrived today. Someone was kind enough to post the full performance from Elliott Smith back in 1998 at the Green Street Grill in Cambridge, MA. It includes a cover of The Kinks song "Waterloo Sunset" , a personal favorite. Elliott and Nirvana are the two acts I wish I had a chance to see live before their departures. I know video footage isn't the same, but damn if this isn't enjoyable to watch. Some slight technical problems during it, but worth a watch.

[video] Elliott Smith Live at Green Street Grille c. 1997

[video] Elliott Smith Live at Green Street Grille c. 1997 In 1997 , Lou Barlow was having a going away party at the Green Street Grille in Cambridge, MA. That night, there was a show, hosted by the late Billy Ruane , a champion of the Boston music scene for decades whose escapades are worthy of the term 'legendary'. What made this night special was that this show would feature an acoustic performance from a still-relatively-unknown songwriter from Portland named Elliott Smith who had been touring & performing with fellow songwriter Mary Lou Lord . Thanks [...]

I'm So Sick Of Snow Patrol-ah!

I'm So Sick Of Snow Patrol-ah! When people discover that I'm into music in a big way they will ask the inevitable question, " What music do you like then? " My standard glib and non-commital reply has always been, " Oh you know, anything released before 1986 ," which, on the one hand tells you nothing, but on the other hand tells you everything you need to know. Why get into the present when there's so much from the past just waiting to be discovered? Of course, just to be contrary, I'm very much into the present. Two albums currently on heavy rotation (do iPods [...]

Heaven Adores You (an Elliott Smith project)

Heaven Adores You (an Elliott Smith project) There is very little that I can say about Elliott Smith that hasn't already been said. He was born, his music changed the world, and then he died - far too soon. The in-between is sometimes wonderful, sometimes heartbreaking, but always beautiful when written out and played in the way that only Elliott could. His death affected me in a way that no musician's ever has; October 21 frequently passes without a mention from me - not because I've forgotten, but because the memory is a painful one, and I suspect that I'm not alone. Elliott Smith set the bar, [...]

mp3 Elliott Smith – "Misery Let Me Down"

mp3 Elliott Smith – "Misery Let Me Down" Elliott Smith has been gone for quite some time now but occasionally there is something new that finds its way to the surface and all of the indie world sits back for a moment and takes retrospect on this amazing songwriters life. Today the track in question is "Misery Let Me Down", a short warm up track that Smith did in preparation for a studio session for Third Rail Radio at the University of Maryland in 1997. The original performance was recorded to mini disc and stored away. Somewhere along the way the performance disappeared until one fans did some [...]

Elliott Smith resurfaces with "Misery Let Me Down"

Elliott Smith resurfaces with "Misery Let Me Down" It's amazing how posthumous releases and "finds" capture the imagination of fans. I have to admit falling prey to this type of fascination. Yesterday, The Washington Post printed an on-line story about a lost track from Elliott Smith . It turns out that Smith was caught performing an unreleased track titled, Misery Let Me Down . It was a warm up for a performance on WMUC-the college radio station for the University of Maryland. While not earth shattering, it's worth checking out: Misery Let [...]

Long Lost Elliott Smith Song Unearthed

Long Lost Elliott Smith Song Unearthed In 1997, Elliott Smith was pre-major label and pre-Oscar nomination, garnering acclaim in certain circles for his just-released either/or -- not a household name by any means, but on his way. It was against that backdrop that Smith made a stop at WMUC, the University of Maryland's campus station, for a 10-song session that went live to air and was recorded for posterity on MiniDisc. The recording subsequently went missing for over a decade-- until recently. What's most expected about the finding is the discovery of a long lost original that Smith used as a warm-up. It [...]

[Listen] Elliott Smith - "Misery Let me Down"

[Listen] Elliott Smith - "Misery Let me Down" There seems to be a pattern emerging in recent months with hidden gems being found by radio stations the world over in regards to some of the worlds finest talent. Earlier in the month we got to hear an early Nirvana gig and a few months back we got the 'lost' Daft Punk track "Drive" . Today comes "Misery Let Me Down" from the late Elliott Smith. TwentyFourBit reports that college radio station WMUC found a live session that was dead to the world for over a decade. Dating back to [...]

Two Bits of Elliott Smith News

Two Bits of Elliott Smith News Photo: Autumn de Wilde Two pieces of Elliott Smith news cropped up recently, the first one being pleasant, and the second decidedly ickier. Let's start with the good news: A new track was just discovered and unearthed; it's over at the Washington Post . The song's called "Misery Let Me Down" ( Jesus , Elliott) and it's from a 1997 session at the University of Maryland's college radio station, WMUC. He recorded it before the official session actually began, and [...]
