Elliott Smith wrote some of the prettiest pop songs ever written. Of course, writing a pretty pop song isn't the same thing as writing an upbeat pop song. "Between the Bars" is a perfect example. The melody is touchingly beautiful and unthreateningly gentle. The lyrics, however, are undeniably troubled. Although the song could double as an unorthodox love song (a popular interpretation of the track), the most likely read is that it's about the threat of impending alcoholism. Another Christmas gift it seems has arrived today. Someone was kind enough to post the full performance from Elliott Smith back in 1998 at the Green Street Grill in Cambridge, MA. It includes a cover of The Kinks song "Waterloo Sunset" , a personal favorite. Elliott and Nirvana are the two acts I wish I had a chance to see live before their departures. I know video footage isn't the same, but damn if this isn't enjoyable to watch. Some slight technical problems during it, but worth a watch.

There is very little that I can say about Elliott Smith that hasn't already been said. He was born, his music changed the world, and then he died - far too soon. The in-between is sometimes wonderful, sometimes heartbreaking, but always beautiful when written out and played in the way that only Elliott could. In 1997, Elliott Smith was pre-major label and pre-Oscar nomination, garnering acclaim in certain circles for his just-released either/or -- not a household name by any means, but on his way.
