diamond doves - "club night" (download) Diamond Doves consists of 3/42s of Elvis Perkins in Dearland . (Though I'm not sure who the extra person is in the above photo). They have been the horn section for My Morning Jacket , Bon Iver , Clap Your Hands Say Yeah , and others. Lately, I've been finding some of their straightforward, catchy songs stuck in my head. Check out their track "Hey Lady" as well. [...]

I entered the studio at about 9:35pm, meeting up with Stuarto, who has the time slot before mine. A quick interview about 15 minutes before my show, another few songs, and I was up. It was requested that I attempt a transition, and as indie music is my theme, and world music is his, I figured I'd kick things off with an oldie, but goodie: "The Gulag Orkestar" by Beirut. The theme of the evening, loosely, centered around folk. Indie folk, folk pop, folk rock, orchestral folk, experimental folk... [...]
In August, I admitted budgetary defeat and greatly limited my purchasing. So there are only four vinyl finds this month. A roadtrip south to Mississippi Records this month and a special column coming soon, I hope, make up for that. 1. Le Sang Song - s /t Where: Sonic Boom (Capitol Hill) How Much: $7.99 (and 25% off) [...]

Today is kind of a bittersweet day for me. It marks the end of an era for The Duke. I have been cooking for golf tournaments at my day job for twelve years. Every Good Friday, I cook for a bunch of guys who drink too much. This will be my thirteenth "Pagan Open". And my last. Sad to see this annual rite of spring come to an end but excited about what will be next. As for the song, I had forgotten how much I enjoyed Elvis Perkins' album "Ash Wednesday". I listened to it a ton [...]
A few years back I was blown away by Elvis Perkins on one of his first ever shows in England with the band that later became known as Dearland. The individual performances and overall song structures blew me away and inspired one of the first posts on this blog. Diamond Doves for to all intents [...]

Filed under: Between the Notes Elvis Perkins , who has been relatively quiet after spending a busy 2009 in support of his second album, will play solo at the University of California at Los Angeles on Feb. 23. He'll open for the filmmaker and author John Waters in an event called 'This Filthy World Goes Hollywood.' Though Perkins' songs often address the unique circumstances of his life -- both the privilege of his lineage and the tragedy of [...]
As My Morning Jacket is set to kick off their five-night, full album residency tonight at New York's cavernous Terminal 5, we wanted to remind everyone to head in early as the Kentucky-based band has recruited an impressive and diverse group of acts to hold down the opening slot. Among the bands that will take the stage before MMJ are psych-rockers Dungen, folk-rock act Elvis Perkins In Dearland and roots-rockers Hacienda - whose sophomore album Big Red & Barbacoa was among my Top 6 Of The First 6 . [...]

From the moment you walked onto the grass at Fort Adams on Sunday, it was fairly obvious this was not to be an ordinary day of music. Unless, of course, you take into account the history of the Newport Folk Festival, then perhaps it can be considered quite normal. Welcoming attendees and forming dance circles even before most of the bands had piled out of the buses, the Providence street band What Cheer? Brigade instilled in the early-arrivals a feeling that sitting wouldn't be a viable option for the rest of the day. You'll [...]
Call it a sign of the times, but rumors that The Cars will reunite began to surface earlier this week after the seminal pop-rock band posted this picture to their official Facebook page showing the surviving members playing in the studio together with caption - "anyone in the mood for a reunion by The Cars?" The band, who broke up in 1987 shortly after the release of their sixth studio Door To Door , staged a comeback under the moniker The New Cars in 2005 without original lead singer Ric Ocasek and drummer [...]

OOF! Busy two days!!! So, not sure of the posting situation here over that time, BUT wanted to leave you with a little something that was [...]

In honour of the day that's in it, here are some tunes by the band from Downpatrick in County Down. The three-piece from Northern Ireland have been together for nearly twenty years and I've been a fan of them since their first album, 1977. The band's punk-pop sound had been augmented for a while by the inclusion of Charlotte Hatherley on guitar, but has reverted to its original line-up in recent years. In 2007, the band announced that they would be only releasing singles for the forseeable future. This is not a bad idea for the group as their single [...]

So I haven't actually heard this record yet, but I did notice it around the cash register the other day and was quite intrigued. Check out the list of performers below, it's pretty indie-tastic! Sweetheart by Starbucks Entertainment Great performers cozy up with the songs that make them gush on our exclusive annual collection of love songs. Track List: 1. "Hand on Your Heart" - José González Originally recorded by Kylie Minogue 2. "Cupid" - Grand Archives Originally recorded by Sam [...]

Filed under: Down the Front! Location: 310 Uxbridge Road, London W12 7LJ Website: http://www.bushhallmusic.co.uk / Capacity: 400 Come to see: It's difficult to pin down any 'typical' sort of band to play Bush Hall, one of the most highly-regarded small venues in the capital. Granted, the west London club has long enjoyed a reputation as a hub of folk-tinged fare, with shows from the likes of Sufjan Stevens , Kurt Wagner, [...]
Valentine season is coming up, and now thanks to Starbucks, the type of listener who actually purchases CD's from Starbucks has the ideal sort-of-hip soundtrack to mark the occasion. The third edition of Hear Music 's Sweetheart series is out today, and features indie covers of love songs ranging from ZZ Top to Kylie Minogue (via Pitchfork ). Some notables: Folk singer/songwriter Jose Gonzalez kicks off the album with a cover of Minogue's "Hand on Your Heart", Mates of State tackle Tom Waits' "Long Way Home", and James Mercer (The Shins fame) and brother [...]
This year at Hidden Track, we concocted a little experiment for our year-end Best Albums of 2009 list. Instead of picking the old fashioned way - subjectively - we opted for something a little different: a collaborative, collective list that incorporates the opinions of everybody here at HT. To begin, we devised an all-encompassing list of around 100 nominees and populated it in a Google spreadsheet - essentially anything that anybody who writes for Hidden Track liked at all, made the list. Then we invited our crew of writers to independently vote on the [...]
Enjoy his positively fantastic rendition of 'Weeping Mary' in the clip below. MP3: Elvis Perkins - Slow Doomsday
