[arting: 3.5] As the story goes, Emil Svanangen returned to Sweden after his last trip to the US, holing up in the country with various orchestral and chamber groups. One listen to his new album under the Loney Dear moniker and you'll see the grand effect the entire venture had on his writing, leading to a record with lush arrangements and careful touches, the like we haven't quite heard from Emil. If you're reading carefully, you can skip beyond album opener, "Name," as it really is more of a carry-over [...]
Loney, Dear Hall Music [Polyvinyl Records] Dear Owl Mag, You know when you meet someone and you fall for them instantly? When everything they say, and how they say it, makes your world transform so dramatically that Inception looks like a student film? But then that person fades out of your life for some reason. [...]
Join me on my latest intrepid venture into sonic style with Flashion Forward! Each week we pluck a recently added interview from our warehouse of current clips and try to read between the artist's sartorial lines. Today, we're beaming up to planet Loney, Dear. And what a strange and wonderful land it is: musical polymath Emil Svanängen of Sweden managed to create a genuinely unique aural terrain in the…wait for it… basement of his parents' home , giving unemployed geniuses (and their folks) everywhere hope that they, too, will produce the next great novel, symphony or work [...]

The last time I saw the Swedish band Loney Dear , I thought it couldn't get any better. I was wrong. This time around Emil Svanängen was stripped down. In place of a drummer, Svanängen relied on his trust iPod. In another change from the previous performance I saw of him, he was joined by his friend Molly who supplied keys and beautiful harmonies to his already strong and ethereal vocals. With her addition, Loney Dear sounded more like an uptempo version of The Swell Season [...]

In a world where most people sound like broken tea kettles, Andrew Bird 's whistling is a breath of fresh air. In fact, everything about Bird is refreshing from his charismatic eyebrow raises to his leg twitches, from the warm, rich sound of his vibrato to his beautiful, crisp vocals. Swedish songwriter Loney, Dear , aka Emil Svanängen , opened for Andrew Bird. Svanängen at first came off as a shy singer, but as his set progressed and the crowd became increasingly engulfed in his [...]

I had never seen a show at the Orpheum Theater in Boston. It's one of those big venues with assigned seating that has never really piqued my interest; however, after seeing Andrew Bird with Loney, Dear at the Orpheum, I'm glad I finally got a chance to experience it. The interior surprised me as it was a lot smaller and more intimate than I was expecting and while having a lavish treatment of ornate moldings and architecture, ceiling murals and drapes, its lackluster upkeep over the years lent it an overall feeling and smell similar to those old [...]

Loney, Dear a.k.a. Emil Svanangen has put out one album every year since 2003…except for in 2008 when he just didn't. That's right. No album that year. What a lazy bum. All he does is sit at his computer creating music by hitting a couple buttons and singing into a little microphone from time to time and he can't even consistently put out one measly album a year. Dear Svanangen: you are not going to make it in this crazy town with such a laid back work ethic. (Sigh) Putting [...]

The new record from Sweden's most excellent sad-pop falsetto Loney, Dear , entitled Dear John , will hit shelves offiicially on January 27. This is the sophomore album from Emil Svanängen, and first in two years since 2007's Loney, Noir . We're super excited for Loney, Dear to be on the same imprint as some of our other faves, like Of Montreal, Joan Of Arc and Asobi Seksu. Tracklist: 01 Airport Surroundings 02 Everything Turns to You 03 I Was Only Going Out 04 Harsh [...]
